Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Here we go again. Please be careful when copying out of ANY book. Years ago, we weeded out the mis-information in the book (as well as Emmet Cockrums). It was subtantively correct in many facets but there was many mistakes in it too, and Elizabeth Hill marriage was one of them. Frank Cockerham and I worked it out years ago based on several property deeds. I would be cautious and look for more/other evidence. I wish I could give more of an argument, but I am not at my compter. I am in the middle of a move from California to Georgia, but I will be back to help work it out. -Corbet Cochran Jr. (-ccjr)

Thanks very much for that information which will fill in some gaps in my outline. This seems to mesh well with the basic data I had received from Ron Cochran some time ago.

Hi there everyone. Sorry for the delay in answering obvious questions. I am in the middle of moving from California to Georgia and have just arrived in Georgia today. I do not have my laptop hooked up yet but fear not, I will be back in the fray shortly.
Do not be mislead. The "Heritage of Surry County, Vol. 1 is supposed to be choked full of errors according to Frank Cockerham in Florida. He did a survey of Humphry's (I call him "Elder Humphry" because he was a founding member of the Briarwood? Church there in Rhonda NC. I have been there.) property, as well as other's in that line. I trust Frank implicitly. there is a no better or cautious researcher I know now living on the Cockerham line. If I recall correctly, Frank stated that the Hill family had property that was contigous to the Cockerham line.
There was some confusion about the name. A couple of years back, I talked with other researchers and confirmed his name was John William Cockerham and we have found is tombstome near Devil's Creek in Wolfe County KY (used to be Owsley Co.). We have not, unfortunately, found Elizabeth Hill's grave, YET.
But, there appears in Elder Humpry's deeds, witnesses by John, and William on independent deeds, which on their own wasn't significant, however, this individual(s) did not match with the census data. John and William was the same person, as second-hand accounts later explained from researchers in my family line. The consensus at that time was that Elizabeth Hill was his wife. I have yet to see co-oberated data, one way or the other. At the time I was reasonably convinced that those were the facts and decided to get accross the pond from the earlier periods. I am, however open to more discussion, especially when I have my computer up and running so I can more accurately show my data. In the illustrious words of Peggy Chapman, [deceased]...SHOW ME THE PROOF!
Here is a little clue about the following reference though... my Humphry, viz:
Elder Humphry/Jemima
John William/Elizabeth Hill
Humphry/Frankie Jane Allen ////(Brother William m. sister Nancy Allen)
Humphry was the eldest. I can prove it by census records. He was born in 1823. I am sure they would not have waited 2 years to have children. - just a clue.

The Cockerham DNA Project is set up for eight variations of the Cockerham
surname. After talking to several sources and hearing from several persons
affiliated with other family DNA projects, I selected a Y-Chromosome test of 25
markers for a much better representation. All of those that had been tested
that I talked to said that most of the people they knew that tried the 12
marker test first had to have it upgraded to a 25 marker test in the long run.
(The 12 marker test cost $99+postage; the upgrade from the 12 marker test to
the 25 marker test is an additional $90 for a total of $189. The 25 marker
test cost $169+postage.) If you go straight to the 25 marker test rather than
the 12 marker test followed by the upgrade it's a saving of $20. However,
each person is free to make his own selection when he joins the project.
To join the project, go to the web site:

I'm aftraid I can't help with these folks who are simply not in my family. I haven't done any research on the Cockerhams in Surry County except to separate them from my line in Wilkes County.

Teresa,
I don't have any children names on Frost SR.
This is what I have according to the "Heritage of Surry County, Vol. 1"
James Snow (1838-1864) married Mary Cockerham
James was the son of Byrd (Birdie) Snow Sr. & Eliza Harris
Birdie was the son of Frost Jr. & Elizabeth Fortner
It does not tell me who Frost Jr. parents were. Guessing I would say Frost
Sr.
According to "Heritage of Surry County, Vol. 1 page 116 Article #155B"
"William Cockerham was born in 1798 in Surry County to David and Mary Ann
Burch Cockerham. On March 21, 1821, he married Elizabeth Hill. She was born in
Surry (now Stokes) County, July 26, 1792 to Joel and Anne Watson Hill. She was
the grand daughter of William and Susannah Smither Hill, Sr., who are believed
to have immigrated to Surry (now Stokes) County from England. William and
Elizabeth Hill Cockerham had five Children.
(a) William Cockerham, Jr. was born circa 1830
(b) Hughs Cockerham 1834-1918 married Hulda Snow, December 14, 1851
(c) Elizabeth Cockerham born September 4, 1837 married Richard C. White,
May 6, 1866
(d) Mary Ann Cockerham was born March 23, 1838, married James S. Snow
on August 11, 1859.
(e) Thomas W. Cockerham born August 8, 1839 married Elizabeth Snow
known as "Aunt Betsie Bob"
Elizabeth Hill Cockerham died in 1839 and on December 27, 1839, a marriage
bond was issued in Wilkes County for William CCockerham and Mary Nancy Brock
(1798-1866) They did not have any children. Nancy was buried in the

Sonya, these Snow-Cockerham marriages just have to be related to my Snow line. MY GGGGGgrandfather was Frost Snow SR.

Can you give me any detail on John William? Corbet Cochran Jr. thinks John William married to Elizabeth Hill was a son of Humphrey Cockerham rather than the David line. I have seen him placed in both lines at varying times. I could use some help here. Thanks.

I did some pretty serious searching in my Cockerham files for this collection of names and found the following which does not obviously coincide. For now I think you have me stumped?
David Cockerham and Mary Ann Burch, parents of:
6. John William Cockerham b. 1798 d. 30 Mar 1852 Surry Co. NC (ancestor
of RonCochran) SEE NOTE BELOW
m. Elizabeth Hill ? (not sure about her identity LDC 2002)
1. William Cockerham, Jr. b. ca 1830
2. Hughes Cockerham b. 1834
3. Elizabeth Cockerham b. 4 Sep 1837
4. Mary Ann Cockerham b. 23 Mar 1838
m. James Snow
1. Byrd Snow b. 1860
2. Carrie Snow b. 1863
5. Thomas W. Cockerham b. 8 Aug 1839 d. 13 Jun 1862
m. Elizabeth Snow
1. Plutina Cockerham
2. Thomas W. Cockerham Jr.
Notes:
John William Cockerham and Elizabeth Hill, listed above have same names as ancestors of Corbet Cochran, Jr. whose John William was the son of Humphrey Cockerham. The listing above may be in error since the list of children does not match the kids known to be the family of Corbets John William. I suspect this is a coincidence and two different families? I could use some help here; dont be bashful!
I don't find Nancy Wright in any information I have. Nor do I find Mary Ann or Polly Walker. Guess I ain't much help!

Hi Cockerham`s,
I don`t want to butt in on your project. But if you will hear me out a little, I`d like to give some advice . FORGET 12 markers, this will show only your haplotype. I would sugest 12 markers only when YOU KNOW without a doubt that you are from the same line. An example: I only "know" Larry Cockerham on this list. Let`s say Larry submits his 25 marker DNA test and Larry has a 2nd or 3rd cousin who would like to submit his. I would have that 2nd, 3rd cousin do the 12 marker test. Another scenario: Larry knows a man who "thinks" he is related to Larry`s Cockerham line, everything looks good on the paper trail, but any relationship would be from 1890 or further back. Do the 25 marker test. Most people who start off with the 12 marker test will go ahead an upgrade to the 25 marker test anyway, so why waste money. In our Stewart project we are so far along that people are upgrading to 37markers.
Best,
Teresa Stuart de Rios

I was just giving you a gentle nudge, as we've done many times before. I love you, even if you are a bit ugly. I just wish we could connect one of these English boys directly to the colonies. Then we could have a serious DNA party.

All I was after was the one tiny link, certainly not the chain. I think we all applaud your efforts, myself included.
