Littleberry Cockerham was the first child of William Winn Cockerham and Edith
Lavinia Stone. He was born 11 June 1768 in Lunenburg County, Virginia. On
11 June 1789 he married Polly Wilkes in Lunenburg County, Virginia. They had
two daughters, Elizabeth and Francis (sic). Elizabeth married William White
on 12 Jul 1804 and Francis married Thomas White on 7 Nov 1810. Littleberry
Cockerham died in Lunenburg County before 12 Jun 1812. If any one wants the
references, I have five references, including what I copied from the marriage
records of Lunenburg County, Virginia.

Hello List I don't know about you guys but I see here, perhaps
Littleberry Cockerham listed by his "first name"? Perhaps instead of it
being one name together like we see it today most times it was back then
really two names.
Don't know if this is of help to anyone or not but this is what I am seeing
here.
Anyone else out there have any ideas about this one?

Larry, where did you find, "total list of Daniel Cockerham Sr.'s children, or if in fact he was

father of all of them. He died apparently separated from his family, some of whom may have
already moved to North Carolina. His younger kids, if in fact the relationship to Daniel

Was he a barrel maker just because it was referenced that he had cooper's tools?

evidence that might give us a further clue. My problem is that I'm still not completely
confortable with the total list of Daniel Cockerham Sr.'s children, or if in fact he was the
father of all of them. He died apparently separated from his family, some of whom may have
already moved to North Carolina. His younger kids, if in fact the relationship to Daniel
Chandler Cockerham/Cochran is correct is strange because he would have left very young kids
behind in Carolne County. He was a barrel maker by trade as evidenced by the cooper's tools in
his inventory. Maybe he was travelling through the tobacco plantations doing work? I don't
know. He and son Chesley were in court several times, apparently debt related, with less than
positive results. Maybe he was avoiding financial difficulties? Elder Humphrey was a British
loyalist himself, so maybe these guys walked to the beat of their own drummers?

Would you please give me more information on your citation regarding , "the writing of George
Washington Cochran of Surry County, a descendant of the Daniel Chandler Cockerham/Cochran b.
1763..."who is still believed by his descendants to have been the brother of my Humphrey of
Wilkes and also brother of this Mary and Kizziah who married Martin McBride..."
Kesiah Cockerham did not marry Martin McBride.

Thank you, Larry, lcoc(a)bellsouth.net for the attachment you sent regarding my question to the
COCKERHAM-L on Daniel Cockerham. My question was this "Would this Halifax County, VA record
"Sept 1769, On HIS own motion, Daniel Cockerham added to tithable list" indicate an age of
Daniel Cockerham, Jr.? Would he have been age 16 at this time or was he just missed? Your
answer was this through private email, "He was older than 16 considerably...Daniel Jr. was
"likely" born up in Caroline County in the early 1730s."
Also, you attached 41 pages entitled "Brian Todd Cockerham and a Few of his Ancestors." Great
writing but I do have a question. I will quote from page 6 of 41 titled "Descendants of Daniel
Cockerham, Sr., "Daniel Cockerham Sr. b. ca 1694 as per LDS records? , location unknown d.
1767 before his will was filed for probate in Halifax County, VA m. Frances -- (identified on
deed) See notes elsewhere in this file..." At this point in 2002, I believe Daniel and Frances
were parents of the following:
Chesley Cockerham m. Abrusha, Elizabeth and Peggy (see later)
Daniel Cockerham Jr. m. Martha (surname unknown)
Humphrey Cockerham "Elder" m. unknown first wife and 2nd, Jemima -
William Cockerham m. Mary Henderson
Mary Ann Cockerham m. - Edwards
Martha Cockerham m. Joseph Cannon East
Kizziah Cockerham m. William McBride
Daniel Chandler Cockerham m. Mary Perkins and Sarah Cook Jones
I am searching the above child Mary Ann Cockerham who m. --Edwards. My question to you is
where did you find this information regarding the children mentioned above? Was it the Surry
County, NC Heritage Book? I have tried for years tried to contact the author of this
information a James E. Cockerham to no avail. I would like to know if you can provide me with
a source for the "Mary Ann Cockerham m. --Edwards." I still have hopes that someone will have
documentation of the purported children and their spouses listed above.
I do have much information of the Kesiah Cockerham who married William McBride which is one of
my collateral lines and do have a bible record of that marriage.

Listed below are some of my Abner Cockerham and variants notes 1776-1773. I see from your
email dated 11-24-2002 that you descend from Abner Cockerham's daughter Sarah Cockerham born ca
1726, Henrico County, VA and married John Law, Sr 11-14-1748 in VA. My notes are probably too
late for you but a possible lead to follow and do have mention of the Law surname. These
references are from book indexes in my collection and do not have the actual record.

Sounds as if you and perhaps Mr. Twain (one of my favorites) have both been up too long. Taking your general theme as a staring point, I might as well take this opportunity to comment on your two excellently written chapters which I did, in fact, read last night. Your instructions were to compare your version with the information from Corbet and my own concoction gleaned from many sources. This long winded dissertation from Twain probably does in fact have some relevance here. Generally speaking, I think we are all somewhat in the same hunt. The pieces we don't see in any of our versions, are, of course, the ones probably most critical to our stated mission of "tying these various Cockerham families together back in Virginia". You have reinforced my belief that this will still be a bit of a challenge and will only likely happen by accident or Divine providence. A little more hard work might help, but a couple of dozen of us "researchers" have only reached this station after !
decades of effort. You have added some detail with English history that I have not seen previously and woven it into some pieces that I have, believe it or not, passed in my paper travels. The Cockerhams in Collumption which you present very well (I suspect that will be very difficult for the average reader to follow, because of the lack of continuity)seems to cover the same folks that are in my file for the most part and the notion still jumps out quite vigorously that the first names of these folks, Phillip, John, Humphrey, etc. are all scattered through our crowd in Virginia 150 years later. The MUST be a link there somewhere. I would prefer to bypass as much jousting as possible between you and Corbet, assuming I can find him again. (He has not gone back online since his computer crashed a few months ago. I have his phone number.) You make reference to the Barbados connection which I believe is plausible in some version. In my own case and from my perspective, you have b!
rought the lineage of Capt. (sea or soldier!) forward in time, as I have seen previously for the most part, to a point in time approaching 1700, where these particular families are passing the boys that we have going back from our known connections. The key focus point that jumped out at my magnified eyes last night was the William Cockerham who live adjacent to Mr. Baber. CAN YOU MAKE ANY STRONG CONNECTION BETWEEN HIM AND THE EARLIER WILLIAM COCKERHAMS. THIS IS THE WILLIAM THAT MOST FOLKS SUSPECT MAY HAVE BEEN THE FATHER OF DANIEL COCKERHAM WHO DIED 1767, but he could have belonged to the John Cockerham line or may have immigrated himself? I would very much like to see us approach a concensus on the William Cockerham story, even if we err? Two historical items you mention that are buried beneath the water touch my own lineage. I can clip a few paragraphs later and send if you are interested. Your sentence "This group had decided to abandon James Towne when 150 new settlers !
and provisions arrived in June 1610"..... My ancestor Stephen Hopkins, later of the Mayflower, was on that ship which met these folks in the James River. This was the crew of the SEA VENTURE that had ship wrecked on Burmuda eighteen months earlier and left a fairly interesting tale. After supplying the Jamestown folks, the re-built Sea Venture returned to England with Hopkins on board. He had family back in England. Later your wrote "in 1622, five years after the death of Picahontas, one-fourth of the colony's population was killed by Indians". My other ancestor Samuel Weaver came to Martin's Hundred after the massacre in 1621 and married a widow Ann Jackson after his servitude was settled with William Harwood. Apparently I'm the result of that union. Just proves you need to be careful when choosing a mate! WHEN YOU HAVE TIME, please consider Joseph Cockerham who would have been born ca 1650 as per his documented marriage to Anne Philaday in 1671. He still has not shown in t!
he William Cockerham saga and he must have arrived or been born in Virginia well prior to the last Capt. Will descendants we have encountered. I think there are cows of various breeds in this herd. Please let me know should any of my rambling make sense. Thanks.
