Lorris & Kenneth,
May I correct the info re William Cockerham & Mary Henderson?
He had no middle initial.
He went to Laurens Co., SC where his fatherinlaw & family settled.
I am desc. from Mary's sister, Sarah, who mar. Pendleton Isbell.
I have a few land records for William while he resided in Laurens
Co., SC. I believe he later moved to Greenville Co., SC by 1810 & lived
next door to Chesley's widow, Margaret/Peggy Martin.
I have never found any record of any children of William's.
I believe he was still alive for the Greenville Co. census age 90-100.
No estate records were found for him.
Is the info that he had sons Matthew,James & Hezekiah from Emmett
Cockrum's book? This is incorrect. Mr. Cockrum made many errors.
William & Chesley & Humphrey were the sons of Daniel Cockerham, Sr.,
who left will in Halifax Co., Va, proved in ct. 21 Apr 1767.
Daniel Cockerham, Jr. died by 11 Dec 1772, when his widow, Martha, was
granted adm. of his estate. Halifax Co., VA Plea book 7:280.
She m (2) Samuel Pigg & I believe they moved to Greenville Co., SC by
1790 census & later moved to Old Pendleton Dist., SC.
In 1790 census Samuel Pegg [sic] lived near Hezekiah Cockran. In 1795
Samuel Pegg purchased 300a & his deed was witnessed by Hezekiah
Cockerham.
Daniel Sr's name was not Daniel D. Cockerham.
People have picked up the D from his will...
He signed Daniel (D) Cockerham.
William, Daniel, Jr., Chesley & Humphrey all probably were born in
Caroline Co., VA where you will find Daniel, Sr's records & records of
Chesley.
Chesley first appeared in Halifax Co. in Jul 1764.
Chesley m (1) widow Abrusha Norment. (Caroline Co., VA records)
Chesley m (2) widow Elizabeth Tribble. (Halifax Co., VA records)

> The only William Cockerham that I have that comes close would be the William
> D. Cockerham that married Mary Henderson on 12 Mar 1781, but he had three sons named Matthew, James & Hezekiah and moved to GA. His father was Daniel D. Cockerham, Jr. Both Daniel, Jr. & William D. were born in Halifax Co., VA.
>
> Many of the Cockerhams from Halifax moved to Surry Co., NC & many from the Surry Co., area moved to KY. Your William C. may have been a son of William D. C. since he named one of his sons William D. and one Daniel.
Kenneth,
Gail asks some good questions. I would look in the following counties:
Surry Co, NC: <http://www.geocities.com/~surryco/>
Wilkes Co, NC: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncwilkes/>
Yadkin Co, NC: <http://www.rootsweb.com/~ncyadkin/>
The only William Cockerham that I have that comes close would be the William
D. Cockerham that married Mary Henderson on 12 Mar 1781, but he had three
sons named Matthew, James & Hezekiah and moved to GA. His father was Daniel
D. Cockerham, Jr. Both Daniel, Jr. & William D. were born in Halifax Co., VA.
Many of the Cockerhams from Halifax moved to Surry Co., NC & many from the
Surry Co., area moved to KY. Your William C. may have been a son of William
D. C. since he named one of his sons William D. and one Daniel.
Since your William named a son after Andrew Jackson, check the roster of the
War of 1812.
Happy Hunting,
Lorris
