Good Evening List Members,
I am researching the above listed persons and would be most appreciative
of any information on both of them. I am posting all the information
that I have on these persons and this came from family information that
was passed down in my husband's family. Sorry I don't have more data.
John Hurt, birthdate is unknown, as well as place but I think perhaps it
could be VA. He married Nancy Cockerham, birthdate is unknown as well
as place of birthdate but I would also think perhaps VA. I know of only
one child and here is what I have on him.
Jesse Gillington Hurt, born 27 March 1808 in VA ? and he died 02 Feb 1889
in IL. He married Elenor Overstreet, born 28 May 1817 in VA and died 15
Jul 1859 in Menard County, IL.
Thank you for your time as assistance.
Have a good evening.
Bill & Pat Sutton in KS

Someone a couple of days ago wrote me privately about Cockerhams in KY &
I accidently deleted the message. I can't remember the county.
If the person who wrote will resend the message I will respond.

Harold thanks for the info. Currently I do not have access to that book. I

Chuck,
Sorry... I am not James who ownes the photo that you are referring to, but I
would like to have a copy of it. I have not had a chance to go thru all of
my notes and facts yet on Kimber, but I do have some info on Company H 54
Regiment. This info is taken directly out of the "Surry County Soldiers in
the Civil War" by Hester Bartlett Jackson.
This is taken from page 37......
Cockerham, David S. Capt Co H 54 Reg NC
David S. Cockerham was born at Surry in 1824 to Daniel C and Sally Roberts
Cockerham, farmers, of the Marsh District. David was teaching school in 1850.
He later went to medical school.
David volunteered 13 Aug 1861 at Yadkinville when he was 30 and was elected
Captain. His name is on the list of those NC officers under fire at Morris
Island, SC, 7 Sept - 21 Oct 1864. The North decided that 600 Southern
prisoners at Fort Deleware were to be sent to Morris Island and placed under
the fire of the Confederate Batteries in Charleston Harbor in retaliation for
alleged cruelties to Northern Soldiers confined in the South (Clark, Vol. IV
page 713). One hundred and eleven of these were from North Carolina.
These Southern Prisoners were crowded into a pen where shots or shells from
Confederate batteries at Moultrie or Sumpter would pass over the heads of
the prisoners or fall on the prisoners in the pen. David S. Cockerham
survived.
After the war he practiced medicine in Yadkin County. He was twice married
with no children. He died in 1900.
If you need a photo copy of this, I will be glad to send you one. Also I
would be interested in any info that you have on the Cockerham's in Surry
Cty. I am especially interested in Rev. Pleasant Cockerham, but any would do.
Thanks,
Sonya Cockerham Self.
Hi Chuck, Exactly what kind of information are you needing on Grandpa Kim
and his regiment? And for what purpose, if I may ask. Thanks!
