> What are the exact dates and sources for the dates for Humphrey's land on Buggaboo in Wilkes County, NC? Also, do you have a source that "...Humphrey came to Wilkes in 1777 or 1778...?"
Humphrey Cockerham came to Wilkes Co. in about 1777 or 1778. According
to a Moravian Land Suit Deposition (WGS Vol 18-2, p 7) in 1805.
"I bought my claim when the land office was opened. Thomas East came out
of Virginia with me. My wife was sorely afflicted & Capt. Montgomery
let me stay on the land & said I would not be interferred with."

I can only document Humphrey's appearance in present day Yadkin County, NC previous Surry County, NC 14 May 1781 when he was assigned 100 acres by Silas Mehuren. The next record is a court record 15 August 1781 "... Humphry Cockram, etal., ordered to view road..." Then, Humphrey had his 100 acres of land surveyed 26 February 1782. He receives the grant 3 November 1784.

I wonder if my Macon Co., NC Cockerham's are related to Benjamin and
Matthew. A younger Matthew Cockerham married a Mira Cockerham and lived in
Macon Co., later Swain Co., NC. Matthew was born in South Carolina according
to the 1850 US Census of Macon Co. Does anyone know of a connection?

Many Cockerham researchers rely on Boddie's work for Cockerham
information.
I research
1. William Winn Cockerham (son of Herny) of Lunenburg Co., VA thence to
Pendleton Dist., SC.
2. Hezikiah Cockerham/Cockram, who I believe was from Lunenburg Co., VA,
thence to Surry Co., NC & to Greenville Dist., SC by 1790 census.
3. Chesley Cockerham who first appeared 1795 in Greenville Co., SC, when
he witnessed a deed for Tucker Woodson.

of Tucker Woodson.]

such as Harris,Randolph,Bolling,Lanier and others. As this is an ongoing
process Historical Southern Familes is no longer accepted as proof by
the society. Previous applications based on this series will need to be
proven again against newer research before Short forms can connect or
before being used as proof for toehr Long Form applications.

John Woodson (&-1644/Virginia)
[Line] Closed-Claims that John Woodson was a doctor are NOT supported by
documentary evidence. Recent research by Virginia Lee Hutcheson Davis
(TIDEWATER VIRGINIA FAMILIES: GENERATIONS BEYOND, pp. 123-124)
raise doubts that John Woodson ever served in this capacity. Virginia
Council records for 1629 name Doctor Pott as the only doctor in the
colony at that time. (John Woodson's death at the hands of Virginia
Indians in 1644 is likewise a tradition not supported by factual
evidence.)
Until service before 1701 is found based on original documents please
use Robert Woodson or John Woodson as the eligible ancestors. Robert was
a landowner in Henrico Co., VA in 1687 & John was known as a
carpenter/wheelwright in Henrico Co. in 1684.

Chapter 5:
"A brief relation of two sundry voyages made by the worshipful M. William
Haukins of Plimmouth, father of Sir John Haukins, Knight, late treasurer of
Her Majesties Navie, in the year 1530 and 1532. Olde M. William Haukins of
Plimmouth, a man for his wisedom, valure experience, and skill in sea causes
much esteemed, and beloved by K. Henry the 8, and being one of the principal
Sea-Captains in the West parts of England in his time, not contented with
the short voyages commonly then made only to the knowne coasts of Europe,
armed out a tall and goodly shippe of his owne of the burthen of 250 tunnes,
called the Paulo of Plimmouth, wherewith he made three long and famous
voyages unto the coast of Brazil, a thing in those dayes very rare,
especially to our Nation. In the course of which voyages he touched at the
river of Sestos upon the coast of Guinea, where he traffiqued with Negros,
and tooke of them elephants teeth, and other commodities which the place
yeeldth: and so arriving on the coast of Brazil, he used there such
discretion, and behaved himself so wisely with those savage people, that he
grew into familiarity and friendship with them. Insomuch that in his second
voyage one of the savage kings of the country of Brazil, was contented to
take ship with him, and to be transported hither into England: whereunto M.
Haukins agreed, leaving behind in the Countery as a pledge for his safetie
and returne againe, one Martin Cockeram of Plimmouth. This Brazilian being
arrived, was brought up to London and presented to K. Henry the 8, lying as
then at White-hall: at sight of whom the King and all the Nobilitie did not
a little marvaile, and not without cause: for in his cheeks were bones made
according to their savage manner, and therein small bones were planted,
standing an inch out of said holes, which in his own countrey were reputed
for a great braverie. He had also another hole in his nether lip, wherein
was set a precious stone the bignes of a pease: All his apparel, behaviour,
and gesture were very strange to the beholders.
Having remained here the space of almost a whole yeere, and the King with
his sight fully satisfied, M. Haukins according to his promise and
appointment, purposed to convey him againe into his countrey: but it fell
out in the way that by the change of aire and alteration of diet, the said
savage King died at sea, which was feared would turn to the loss of the life
of Martin Cockeram his pledge. Nevertheless, the savages being fully
perswaded of the honest dealings of our men with their prince, restored
againe the said pledge, without any harm to him, or any man of the company:
which pledge of theirs they brought home againe into England with their ship
fraighted, and furnished with the commodities of the countrey. Which Martin
Cockeram, being an officer in the Town of Plimmouth, was living within these
fewe yeeres."
My ancestor John V Cockerham was in Lowndes Co MS when he got his grant for
land in AL. He moved there with his brother & other family. John V's father
was Drury Cockerham who moved to AR several years later. John V also moved to
Izard Co AR in the late 1800s. Do you think you are connected in Lowndes Co
MS?

Dear Gail,
No one knows when Chesley Cockerhan's second wife, Elizabeth __ Tribble
died. I never found her signing a deed with Chesley.
Chesley left Halifax Co. about 1778 for Wilkes Co., NC. I think his
assumed brother William went about the same time.
I think Elizabeth __ Tribble Cockerham died in Wilkes Co., NC. Chesley
remarried (3) there in Aug 1782, Peggie Martin.
Chesley mar by 10 Aug 1772, Elizabeth Tribble, widow of Shadrack, who
died in 1759. His Halifax Co., Va will was proved 14 Oct 1759.
Tribble children were: Spilsby,William,Benjamin,Absolem & Winefret.
Tribble was from Caroline Co., VA, as was Chesley. Shadrack was in
Halifax Co., VA by Jun 1757. Chesley about 1764.
Abner, William, & Samuel Cockerham were probably sons of William
Cockerham & Jemima Brame. Richens Brame m Hannah Cheadle & their dau.,
Jemima m William Cockerham of Caroline Co., VA
Abner went to Greene Co., GA.
Probably Richens Cochran, Rev. soldier, of Greene Co., GA was a brother.
Perhaps Cheadle was also a son of William. [A] Cheadle Cochran purchased
land in Jasper Co., GA in 1812
William is believed to be William Cochran (S38624) b c 1748 in Va d 12
Dec 1819 in Clarke Co., AL, m (1) 1780 Henry Co. Sally Edmondson. He
applied for a pension in Clark Co. in 1818 aged about 70 formerly of
Henry Co. He enlisted on the same day & in same unit as Samuel Cochran,
proven son of William & Jemima.
This William of Clark Co. has been confused with William Winn Cockerham
& with William Cockerham who mar. Mary Henderson in Wilkes Co., NC.

Ok, any ideas on who she was??
Was this the Elizabeth listed as daughter of Abner I think on New River
Notes by any chance??
The one listed as a Widow who later remarried and then moved to the
Carolinas??
The one who is listed as being the wife of a soldier and listed with another
lady who also turns up in the Carolinas later on making me feel that maybe
they all followed each other there??
Thanks a ton for any thing at all!!
