Having grown up in Louisiana and having visited Cockerham, Lancashire County,
England, I have to agree with Bill. The "h" is silent, giving the following:
Cockeram.

Bette,
A quick look at a couple of files of Paul B. Murff paper on Wm Winn Cockerham, and I found:
>From Paul B. Murff, book..
. John Cockerham, son of Wm. Winn and Edith Stone Cockerham was in Anderson Co., SC 1809, the
time he and his brother, John and Drury gave Peter Cockerham power of Attorney to represent
their interest in the settlement of Richard Stone Estate.
A second set of data was found in
Emmett E. Cockrum's Book.
A HISTORY AND GENEALOGY OF THE COCKRUM FAMILY IN AMERICA
The following individuals are listed and their aid acknowledgement
. William Winn Cockerham line:
Annie Mae Lyon Hutton, Imogen Lyon Webb, Mae Frances Cockrum
Dedmon, Katie Etoile, Johnson Cockrum.
However, the data he had for Wm Winn C's son John was the wrong John
Cockerham, he had the John Cockerham b. 1735/ Elizabeth Brambley children
and was in error.

To prove that Hezikiah of Greenville Dist., SC was a Cockerham.
Hezikiah Cockran [Cockerham/Cockrum] [b. 2/19/1762] first appeared in
Greenville Dist in the 1790 census--
4m -16,1m 16+,1f,0 slvs

1830 & 1840 census were in alpha order, can't tell neighbors.
Hez. m (2) by Oct 1826 Judith/Juda Sparks, widow of Jesse.
(Jesse Sparks' estate.)
Hez's earliest records show his name as Cockreham. 22 Sep 1792. He wit.
a deed when James West deeded Abenr Sheridan 66a on br. Reedy Fork,
Reedy Riv. Next rec. was 1 Mar 1793 when Hez. bought 150a from James
West. In this deed his name was spelled Cockreham,Cockraham & Cockuham.
Warrant 2 Feb 1795. Arrest Susan West, single woman now w/child.
Security-Hezikiah Cockram.
5 Mar 1796 Hezakiah Cockrham wit. Samuel Pegg's deed to George Seaborn.
[Was this the Samuel Pegg that mar. Martha Cockerham, widow of Daniel
Cockerham of Halifax Co., VA?]
Hezekiah Cockraham one of the appraisers of estate of William Cox.
10 May 1798. Hezekiah Cockram bought a fork at the estate sale.
Hez. died 1846 (not 1843) His will was rec. 27 Apr 1846.
Children:
William b. 1/24/1786 married Mary Spillers, dau. of George Spillers.
John b. 8/20/1789 m Sarah __.
Was she a Wells? John had a son named George Seaborn Cockrum.
Martha b. 3/11/1792, m Miles Jennings & moved to AL
Daniel b. 6/4/1794 was unmarried. Census indicates he was b 1800. He
died after 1860 census. No record found of his estate in Grnv.
Elizabeth b. 2/28/1796 m Thomas Holland of Anderson Co., SC.
He was a preacher.
Nancy b. 10/15/1802 married Daniel COCKRUM.
They moved to Cherokee Co., AL.
Hez's will is posted on the Greenville Co., SC will page as is Jesse
Sparks' will & George Spillers' will.
I have posted an anotated 1800 census of Greenville Dist. on the
Greenville Co. web page that includes Chesley & Daniel Cockrum, p.
267,Hezekiah & James Cockrum p. 281, Wm. Cockrum p. 96, William Cockram
p. 185.
Equity Case 55 Wm. Crane, Sarah Crane vs. Hez. Cockrum, Juda Cockrum
filed 30 Sep 1830.
In Equity No Roll 89 Wm. Crane & Sarah Crane vs Hezekiah Cockrum filed
17 Mar 1836.
Daniel Cockram,et al,execs. vs John Cockram #4006. 1847.
In Equity Roll No. 28 George Spillers vs Wm. Cockrum. 1826.
(This record proves Wm. Cockrum & Mary Spillers had a son named Hezekiah
Allen Cockrum. Was their a connection to an Allen family.
Equity Roll #253 Thomas Holland, et al, vs Patsey Jennings, et al
1857
There are a number of other records in Greenville re Hezekiah.
Not listed here.
Two Hezs appeared in the 1820 census & it is not clear who the second
one was. He may have been the Hezekiah who
served in the War of 1812 & mar. Lucy Marshall & moved to Lincoln Co.,
TN. Lucy was the sister of Dr. Dennis Marshall of Greenville Dist.
Marshall's estate is posted on the Greenville Co. will page.
There were several Williams living in Greenville Dist. betw. 1800 &
1840. One was Wm. Cockrum who lived next door to Chesley's widow in 1810
& appeared 1820 nr the Cooleys, who inter-married with John Cockrum's
family. (John Cockrum/Cothran who m Sarah Ann Woodson.)
Chesley witnessed Sarah Ann Woodson's father's deed in 1795 in
Greenville Dist. Chesley was closely associated with the Cooleys & their
family, as was Hezekiah. Hez. attended Jacob Cooley, Sr's estate sale.
I believe the William who appeared 1810 & 1820 was Chesley's presumed
brother, William, who had mar. Mary Henderson in Wilkes Co., NC.
He was living in Laurens Co. in 1800 & was there when Mary's parents
died in Laurens Co.
I contend the old William in Greenville Co. in 1830 was this William.
1830 census was in alpha order & you can not place neighbors.
I believe Hez. was a Southside VA Cockerham.
Hezekiah Cockerham mentioned once in Lunenburg Co., VA recs.
(Order Book 14:17, 10 Sep 1778) and
Surry Co., NC Cooks Dist., Andrew Robinson Tax collector, 1786.
Committee reports persons who have moved out of county after are
allowed as insolvents-included Hezekiah Cockram.
(These 2 recs. furnished by other Cockerham researchers.)
I have abstracted all of the Greenville Co. records re Hez.
with the assistance of Stephen M. Brown of Greenville, SC.
I have compiled records for all Cockerham,Cochran,Cockrum,Cothrans in
Greenville Dist., SC with the intention of publishing.
Gail Moore furnished the exact birthdates for Hez's family from her
Bible record.
Chesley was in Greenville Dist. as late as 1808 & his widow was there in
the 1810 census.
Some researchers state he died in GA & I believe that is a serious
error.

Jim,
I just thought I would check in with you. I have not had a chance yet to
make the copies I promised you. Things have been so hectic around here. I
will make them! Hopefully this week. I am waiting for the Bounty Land
Warrant application on David Cockerham to come in this week or next. A
friend of mine at the National Archives has found it for me. She is going to
mail it sometime this week. She told me what information it has on it.
There is nothing different than what I have already discovered. But, I still
want the copy. It will also include David Cockerham's military record. She
was in Jackson Parish, LA when she filed it. I had thought about going there
and digging a little bit. But, I found out the courthouse burned there in
1880. She certainly seemed to get around! I mean she was born in South
Carolina, moved to Amite Co., Mississippi, then to Catahoula Parish, LA, then
to Union County, AR, and apparently Jackson Parish, LA. She was 77 years old
when she filed for the Bounty Land Warrant. She probably died soon after
this. No record is found on her after that. I'll let you know if I run
across anything else. I will send the papers as soon as I can.
Debbie
Ok
Here goes nothing,
Hezikiah Cockerham b. 2/19/1762 unknown place unknown parents spelling used
for surname by himself and others: Cockrain, Cockrum, Cockerham.
Marriage: Unknown date; unknown place
First wife: Elizabeth unknown birth place and date, unknown parents
Children:
William b. 1/24/1786 Unknown place
John b. 8/20/1789 Unknown place
By 1790 this family shows up on the US Census in Greenville Dist. SC where
Hez. remains until his death in 1843 when his will probated in Said county.
(I have this will). Also showing on this census with Hez. and Elizabeth are
two unknown boys under age 16 at the time. They then disappear off the list
with them. It can't be their children as we have no record of them other
than the ones showing here. This record came from the Bible of a Grandson
of Hez. born to eldest son William above.
Children Con't:
Martha b. 3/11/1792 Greenivlle Dist. SC
Daniel b. 6/4/1794 Greenville Dist. SC
Elizabeth b. 2/28/1796 Greenville Dist. SC
Nancy b. 10/15/1802 Greenville Dist. SC
Later in c1825 Elizabeth (the wife) died.
Hezikiah remarried to Judith Cooley Sparks Widow of Jessie Sparks of
Greenville Dist.
(I have the law suite filed against this couple by the daughter of Jessie
Sparks in regards to her fathers will dealing with ownership of slaves)
Later Judith died
Hezikiah remarried for the last time to Sarah unknown she is listed in his
will probated in Greenville Dist. SC in 1843 (see above) She is listed as
the step-mother of Daniel.
Daniel is listed but only him and Sarah with Hez. saying that his other
children had already been provided for.
I have Hezikiah Cockerham on the US Censuses from 1790 until his death in
1843 of course the last census he shows on is the 1840.
**************Hezikiah Cockerham not to be confused with Hezikiah Allen his
Grandson born later on. Also Greenville Dist. SC.******************
*************Note also that there are a ton of Hezikiah Cockerhams' in
Greenville Dist. at that time******************
I have checked the ship lists to see if he came over and was married and
born elsewhere but no luck. I have asked for lookups for a birth in both
Ireland and Scotland and no luck again.
I think that Hezikiah Cockerham was born in the USA.
It is possible that he came from NC to SC.
Living in SC in Greenville and showing up for the last time on the US Census
is
William Cockerham age group 90-100 living with him is a woman age group
80-90.
It is said that it can be proven that this man above is the known son of
Daniel of Surry County, NC.
I was also told that the son of Daniel of Surry County, NC is named William
Dunlap Cockerham.
Now in my direct line down from Hezikiah Cockerham of Greenville Dist. the
line goes like this:
Hezikiah Cockerham/Cockrum
William Cockrum
George Cockrum/Cothran
Ovid Dunlap Cothran
Orrin Charlie Cothran
Me
Now on the 1880 US Census I have been told that George Stated that his
father was b. MD. One of the others stated on the same years Census that he
was b. GA.
The third one we have lost track of his name: Edward A. Cockrum who
married Mary Ann White in Calhoune County, AL.
Now when the family began to split off this was the Children of Hezikiah
Cockrum and his Grandchildren.
They migrated into GA, AL, and TN. among others yet unknown.
Can any of you help me with this man??
Thanks a ton and if I can connect with proof then I have quite a bit to
share.

Ruth I know some census do list the co. & state of birth in some census.
Did the 1850 census actually state he was b in Halifax Co?
When was he born?
I research Daniel Cockerham, SR. & his son Daniel, Jr. & Daniel, Sr's
probable sons: Chesley & William & know a little of Humphrey Cockerham.

Harold I have written Corbet that I disagree with his dates re Daniel
Cockerham [Sr].
I think Daniel Sr. was b nearer 1700. Daniel & William Cockerham's land
bounded on land of Robert Baber in 1722/3 in King William Co.
Daniel's probable son Chesley Cockerham was probably b c 1730, as he
(Chesley) was sued May 1751 in King William Co., VA & Jul 1752
Chesley was mar. by Jan 1757 to widow Abrusha Norment.
Humphrey couldn't have been b in Halifax Co., VA. Daniel was still in
King Wm. Co. in 1757 & Halifax Co. wasn't formed at that time.

Bob,
To my knowledge with Current Cockerham folks, the name has always been pronounced
with only two syllables, not three, making in phonetically, "Cock-Ram".
It was only a matter of time from 1807 in Morgan Co, Ga. to 1900 that the family spellling was
changed, also slightly , the pronounciation was changed at the end from rum to ran.
Harold
