Hello list,
Just a note to add to the message list.
I have found Cockerham surnames in the following location.
Surry County Va., the Capt William Cockerham, (and two generations. ref.
John Bennett Boddie,
Historica. Southern Families Vol III.)
Lunenburg 1752-1786and Mecklenburg Counties 1765-1795, in Virginia.
(Henry, Philip and sons, Benjamin, and William Winn Cockerham) ref Will
books and Deed books
from both counties.
Surry County, North Carolina, about 1775 to current date) ref Surry County
NC Heritage Book.
>From the Wiliam Winn Cockerham books, (by Paul Murff, Nancy Chamber
Underwood, and
Lorris G. Cockerham) seem to have migrated from Lunenburg Co. Va. to
South Carolina, then
to Georgia, then to Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Arkansas.
There is a Benjamin Cockram and Matthew Cockram that settled in Morgan
County Ga. about
1807, with Matthew Cockram, a Rev War Vet who stated in his pension
application in 1833 while about 70 years old, that he was born in Lunenburg
County, Va. and livd in Ky, SC, and Georgia. This Matthew
was a witness to Benjamin Cockram's WILL in 1815.
Harold Cochran
(descendant of Benjamin Cockram above)
Hi,
I'm checking Debbie Richard's email for her. She is researching this
Cockerham line and has lots of information on them. I talked with her about
your email and she said to let you know she would love to talk to you about
these Cockerham's.
She'll be in touch as soon as her computer is up and running again. In the
meantime, if you'd like to ask her something or tell her anything about these
guys you could email me and I would call Debbie.

Hello Lister's,
Just joined this list today and I'm going to jump right in with a post.
We have in our possession a copy of a handwritten document by my husband's
1st. gt. grandmother, Laura Bell Hurt-Sutton that lists her ancestry.
Some of the names have dates and other's do not.
Parents of Laura Bell Hurt-Sutton are:
Jesse Gillington Hurt, b. 26 Sept. 1808 in VA ? He m. Elenor Overstreet
b. 28 May 1817
Parents of Jesse Gillington Hurt are:
John Hurt b. ? in ? I would guess by at least 1775-1780
Nancy Cockerham b. ? in ? I would assume that her birthdate would fall
somewhere between 1775-1785
Would very much appreciate any information on the ancestry of Nancy
Cockerham and also John Hurt.
I realize this isn't a whole lot of information to go on but alas, it is
all I have at the moment.
Thanking you in advance for your time assistance and you'all have a good
evening.
Patsy(Pat) Sutton
Hello:
Do any of you on the Cockerham list claim Col. William Cockerham and Wife
Elizabeth from Smith Co. Tenn.?
As you know or may not know all of the State of Tenn. use to be part of Roan
Co. NC at one time. So that would mean that this Col. William Cockerham &
Wife Elizabeth of Smith Co. Tenn. was really in Roan Co. NC which part later
became Surry NC.
I found them today in a book in our little library about some of the earlier
Colonial records.
Can anyone tell me about them???

Gail,
I'm really not able to answer your question regarding any connections
between Cockerham and Walker.
I descend from a line of Cockerhams, and simply married into the Walker
surname.

Daniel COCKERHAM and his family appear in the 1850 Hendricks Co IN
census. At that time they have Elizabeth COCKERHAM, 6 months old, living
with
them. Her age is too close to the next oldest daughter, Rhonda Ann COCKERHAM
(1 year old) to be a child of Hannah and Daniel. I believe she is the
daughter
of John COCKERHAM and his first wife, Eliza BURKS. The Elizabeth COCKERHAM
(9
years old) who shows in the 1860 MO census must be another child born to
Daniel and Hulda a year after the 1850 census.
The family moved to MO in 1860. Daughter, Nancy Jane COCKERHAM, was
married at Rock Creek, KS in 1865. Daniel COCKERHAM died before 1870. Hulda
died after 1870 since she appears with her two sons, Dan and Enos in the
1870

[Theory: He may have moved to Greenville Co., SC & lived next door to
Chesley's widow in 1810.]
Wm. Cockerham,Humphrey Colkerham[?] and William Cockerham signed the
petition regarding religious toleration or freedom presented to the
House of Burgesses by the Baptist. Petition read 13 Jun 1775.
(MAGAZINE OF VIRGINIA GENEALOGY, V:35, No. 3, pp 204-205.)
(Two Williams listed in this petition.)
[Theory] Some Cockerham researchers believe that Chesley & Humphrey had
a sister Frances who mar. Thomas East.
No proof as to who the following were...
Mary COCKERHAM
b. abt. 1745, Halifax County, Virginia
Kizziah COCKERHAM
b. abt. 1745, Halifax County, Virginia
Daniel Chandler COCKERHAM
b. 7 Sep 1763, Halifax County, Virginia
d. 11 Dec 1843, Surry County, North Carolina
Was this man who sd he went into service in place of his uncle William?
Doesn't his pension app. say he was b in Halifax Co.?
Was he the son of Daniel Cockerham, Jr. & Martha ___?
What is the proof his middle name was Chandler?
Martha COCKERHAM
b. abt. 1766, Halifax County, Virginia
Susanna COCKERHAM
b. abt. 1767, Halifax County, Virginia
Dear Corbet,
This reads like Humphrey Cockerham is the son of Daniel Cockerham, Jr.
and that isn't correct--or it isn't in my records.
And why do you call him Elder Humphrey?

I'd be interested in who you list as the father of Humphrey. I also have
the father listed as Daniel Jr.

Hi cousin,
We may be related in two ways, First through the Cockerham line, and
secondly through the Walker line. My mother was the d/o of William Clay
Walker of Guilford College NC. I have yet to do much work on the maternal
side of the line. I have however, done some extensive work on the Cockerham
line. Basically, what I have done is networked with about 120 people online
to work up a file, which I am still working on. But, we insist on complete
privacy. The condition is that intel is freely shared with those of us who
are a part of this line, but publishing, other than intel the individual has
gathered on their own, is out of the question. If you can agree to that, I
have about 540 megs of data on Cockerham's/Cochran's etc. I would be willing
to share. The best way to get the intel to you in via snail mail. It would
take forever to upload everything to you. So, I can make a you a CD of
everything I currently have available. You would not believe the amount of
data. All I ask is replacement cost of the CD and mailing expenses -$9. My
line (roughly) starts in Devon England 1503 through Captian William of
Jamestown/ Joseph of King William Co./William/ Daniel/Daniel Jr./Elder
Humphry/ William/ Humphry/ James Robert/ Valentine/ Corbet Sr. There are
others in this line. I just wanted to give you a rough idea. Get back to me
and I will get on the stick.

My Cockerham ancestors also come through Daniel Cockerham, Sr. I have a
webpage of my line at:
http://www.angelfire.com/ut/djmwalker/cckerhamgen.html
or, for those of you who use Internet Explorer,
http://www.angelfire.com/ut/djmwalker/cckerhamgenie.html
My information comes from a Great-Aunt who spent most of her life
tracing parts of my paternal family line, and some from the LDS files.
And although she handed down the actual info, regretably, she died and
no one can find any source data.
I would be happy to hear from anyone who can fill in any blanks.
