According to SC Census records one of my ggg-grandfather's brothers was
Peter Cockrell b 1851 March in SC. He disappears--supposedly going to
Texas. In the 1900 Census there is a Peter Cockrell b 1851 listed as born
in SC married to Victoria b 1843 in SC married 28 years. (This is in
Panola Cty pct 4) Does anyone have any connections with this family?
My family probably comes thru the Fairfield Cty, SC Cockrell line/ but I
can begin verifying thru available sources beginning here:

Hello
I have been studying my records again. It seems they needed to be trimlined
to actually get the point and questions always help. If this is still unclear
please ask questions and let me study it further.
Other papers show that Simon Peter Trapnall was the recipient of a Deed of
Gift from Thomas Cockrill
4 MAY 1754
Deed of Gift from Thomas Cockrell and wife Deborah of Parish of Frederick Co.
to Daughter Molley Cockrell for love and goodwill - 250 acres we purchased of
Wm. Husk. Should dau Molley die without heirs then to the next child we have
and for want of such heirs to our son Simon Peter Trapnall.
Cvj. - This deed is recorded on page 289, and appears to have the same land
description as the Release of
4 May from William Calfee. At about this time there was a Lease and Release
from Thomas and Deborah to John Summers recorded on page 180 of Prince Wm. Co.
Minute Book, 1752-53.
Okay this does not fit but we are traveling backwards from my normal path.
Next record is
25 NOV 1754
Cockram to son - Thomas Cockrill acknowledged a Deed of Gift to Simon Peter
Cockrill at whose motion the same is admitted to record.
(Pr. Wm. Co. Order Book, Part III, page 175.)
Cvj - That should be Order Book 1754-1755, Bk. III, Part 2, page 175.
Thomas Cockrill acknowledged a Deed of Gift to Diana Cockrill and others of
his children and on his motion the same is admitted to record.
Thomas Cockrill and Deborah his wife acknowledged a Deed of Gift to Moses
Cockrill. Admitted to record.
Cvj - These Deeds are on page 175, Pr. Wm. Co. Order Book 1754-55
This is not Peter Cockrill. Next record.
27 MAY 1755
Ordered that William Thorn, William Hazelrigg, John Summers, Obed Calvert or
any three of them being first sworn before some Justices of the Peace for this
county inventory & appraisement all the Estate of Thomas Cockrill deceased in
current money that shall be brought to their view & that the Administrator
return an inventory thereof to the Court.
(Prince William County Order Book 1754-1755, pg. 251)
The Thomas Cockrill deceased is the father of Peter Cockrill who died in
1803. Next document.
1755 Ordered the Church Wardens of Dettinger Parish binds Simon Peter
Cockrill to Thomas Dorrell (Darrell?) till he attains lawful age.
(Pr. Wm. Order Book 1755-1757, page 212)
2 SEP 1755
At a Court for Frederick County this appraisement of the Estate of Thomas
Cockrell dec'd being returned by the Administrator (Wm. Hurst) is admitted to
record. 36.15.5
The next records seperate Peter Cockrill from Simon Peter Trapnell.
17 SEP 1772
Simon Peter Cottrill, of the County of Bottertot, deeds to Peter Cottrill, of
County of Prince William and parish of Dettinger, for 25 pounds - quiet title
to 100 A. left of what was given "to me alias Trapling by a Deed of Gift of
Thomas Cottrill dec'd. and recorded in court ye 25th of November in ye year
1754".
Cvj. - This deed recorded 1 AUG 1774 in Pr. Wm. Co. D. B. K., pp. 42-43.
Reacknowledged 5 DEC 1796 by oaths George Cockrell, Et Al.
Now we see the seperation of the names Peter and Cockrell. Next document
5 DEC 1796
A deed, dated 15 OCT 1796, from Simon Peter Cockrell, alias Trapling, of
Russell County, Virginia to (Cvj. - I have Thomas Cockrell) for 100 acres in
Prince William County (Cvj. - I think that this is a Warranty Deed to replace
the quitclaim to Peter Cottrill, recorded 25 NOV 1774 correction "dated 17
SEP 1772") (Cvj. - See also the Deed of Gift dated 25 NOV 1754 in Pr. Wm. O.
B. part 2, page 175.)
This then shows that these are not the same person but rather Uncle and
nephew. Peter Cockrell was the brother of John Cockrell who married Ann or
Susan Trapling or however the name ends up being spelled.
This next record places Simon Cockrell in Russell County, Virginia in 1796

This would show the order in which I have established this record for Simon
Cockrell to be the Simon Peter Cockrill/Cockrell alias
Trapnell/Trapling/Tarpley that we see.
Thomas Cockrill is supposed to be his grandfather. However he may be the
father yet with the odd name many possibilities do crop up.
What if Thomas is the father? would Peter Cockrill of Prince William County
then be his half brother? Who really is the deceased mother of Simon
Cockrell? Can there be records of this family in Frederick County, Virginia?
Would he have lived in Prince William County, Virginia?
Much more details would be forthcoming.
Hope to hear from you soon

Hello,
This one checks out to be a descendant of Alexander Cockrell and Sarah Helm.
Since I did not have this information in my records I thought you all might
like to share with her. I do not think she is on the list yet but will tell
her about it.
this would be through the son Moses.
Hope this helps someone.

The below message was sent to me in error I think. Since I have not sent out
any messages on this lately (that I recall) could someone help out on this?

Dear Debbie,
I basically have the same info on John Cockrell that you do. He was born in
South Carolina, fought in the Revolutionary War at the Battle of Cowpens. I
had his wife's name as Nancy, but in a publication put out by McDonough
County Genealogical Society (Emmet Township Pioneers) I found a reference
to John and Mary Cockrell being the parents of Flora Powell Cockrell. No
surname.
Do you have any dates for John Cockrell? Or have you seen any verification
that he fought in the Rev. War? I found a John COCKRILL in the DAR books,
but it doesn't seem to be the same person.
Here are the children's names that I have for John Cockrell. I don't know
how reliable my surce was.
1) Flora Powell - I have 22 Feb 1796 as her birthdate. (in Eastern
Tennessee) Thanks for the copy of her obit.
2) Nancy
3) Sheldon or Sheldon
4) Madela Lee (female)
5) Celia - I had 15 Oct 1794 (in Eastern Tenn.) as her birthdate even
before I saw her obituary. I have a copy of a similiar obituary. Basically
it's the same, but your version had a little more detail.
6) Frances (M) - Don't know if this is a mistake. Maybe it really was a
daughter, or maybe a son who died in infancy.
7) Jemima (F)
My records have John Hainline, Sr. married to Elizabeth Purdy. ("Emmet
Township Pioneers" just has the surname Purdy, no first name). BUT George
and Flora (Cockrell) Hainline's first son was John Dunford (or Dumford,
I've seen it both ways) Hainline, so the name Susannah Dumford certainly
could fit in.
I have John Hainline, Sr. born 1760 in VA and died 1834 in Montgomery
County, KY in case you're interested.
There's another thing I'm puzzled about: I've always heard about the three
Hainline brothers who went to McDonough County - John, Jr., George and
Jacob, but "Emmet Township Pioneers" also refers to a brother named
Nathaniel who had a son in McDonough County. Maybe Nathaniel stayed in KY,
while the son went to IL with his uncles. That's just my guess.
("Emmet Township Pioneers has about 14 pages of Hainline info - mostly on
George and John Jr."s lines. I can't see much on Jacob's family so far.)
Please let me know if any of this helps you. The Cockrell's have been tough
to get info on! I will definitely check out that site you sent me.

Hello,
I want to keep this seperate at this time from the other since I do not have
the connecting Cockrells to the Thomas and Deborah Cockrell. Also in case I
have misunderstood the connection. For now this is family tradition.
J. C. Hotten's LISTS OF EMIGRANTS TO AMERICA 1600 - 1700
shows a William Cockerell a taylor from the county of Staffordshire leaving
Southampton for Barbadoes on 30 MAR 1639.
A William Cockerell appears in "A list of servants to Foreign Plantations from
Bristol, England to Barbados 1654-1686" published in the JOURNAL OF THE
BARBADOS MUSEUM AND HISTORICAL SOCIETY, VOL. 14 NO. 2
The entry in the original list was made on May 25th 1659.
This is all I have at hand at the moment but it shows that this family
tradition is not fiction. I am just curious to discover if this was anything
that anyone was already aware of?
These are all things I have discovered within the group of notes pertaining to
Simon Cockrell and his descendants. I am certain more of this will turn up
and I hope to hear from anyone having information regarding this.

Hello,
Thank you Jack for the reply. I have some different information to date based
on those old court records. (kerchoo!!)
The Virgina Court records of Simon Cockrell lead a trail from Russell County
back to Washington County we know. The survey for the property he owned in
Russell County was Washington County back when he acquired it. Washington
County was closely tied to Montgomery County in the Survey record. That has a
drawing of the property that shows the boundaries are not square by the way
and this is why nobody could map it before the survey record was found. Then
in the Montgomery County records of 1777 Simon Cockrell took the Oath of
Allegience as a Revolutionary. This has been established with the NSSAR and
the NSDAR records by Wilson Crook a descendant of Moses Cockrell who died by
falling in a salt well while being lowered on a rope. I have that story now
but more on that later.
Montgomery County was Botetourt County and we find that connects to this
record:
Deed Book J Page 42 Prince William County, Virginia
September 17, 1777
Between Simon Peter Cottrill alias Trapling (Trapnell in Frederick County)
living in Botetourt County and Peter Cotrill of Prince William County, Parish
of Dottinger, 100 acres sold to Peter Cotrill by Simon Peter alias Trapling in
Prince William County, it being all of the land that was left of a greater
tract given me alias Trapling by Deed of Gift of Thomas Cottrill, deceased &
recorded 25th of November 1754. Land lies on south side of Occoquan. Signed
Simon Peter alias Cockrell.
Acknowledged 15 October 1796. Reacknowledgment of Deed 5th December 1796 &
ordered to be recorded.
*Peter Cockrells will (Cottrell) Will Book H on page 528 Dated July 18, 1803
and probated September 5, 1803.*
Then we see these records relating to the same.

Deborah Cockrill acknowledged Deed to Peter Cockrill same recorded
So now what is all of this? Thomas has a wife named Deborah and Simon is
Simon Peter Cockrill/Cottrill alias Trapling tied to the Trapnell family of
Frederick County, Virginia. He was living in Botetourt County, Virginia and
affiliated with Dottinger Parish. His places of residence as a minor were
controlled by one Thomas Dowell and one George Latham. Adding to this I can
find the surname Trapnell in Virginia. Unfortunately I had not been aware of
a need to search Frederick County, Virginia until this information appeared.
Does anyone have a Thomas Cockrell married to Deborah and her maiden name?
The record from VIRGINIA MAGAZINE OF HISTORY VOL. 2 Page 47
A roll of Captain Henry Harrison's Company July 13, 1756. Virginia Troops in
French and Indian War: John Cockeril enlisted October 8, 1756 at Richmond, age
30 - 5'10" trade Planter of Virginia.
Was this John Cockeril the planter of the property inherited by Simon Peter
Cockrell alias Trapling who later sold the property to his uncle Peter
Cockrell?
Earlier researcher seem to believe this is so.
It is further contended that John Cockrill Jr. of Nashville, Tennessee was the
son of John Cockrill who came over with Braddock. Given the date of arrival
of Braddock this John Cockrill could not be the same John Cockeril who was a
Planter of Virginia. He would not have had time to acquire the land nor to
have planted anything.
I will add here that I did not draw these conclusions on my own. The research
was compiled by Flossie Cockrell McNichol and Nancy Wilson and sent in the
retyped version by Chester V. Jackson to Isobel Gough. What I have are copies
of those letters and not quotations from any book. Flossie McNichol was 71 in
1967 when she wrote all of this out longhand and sent it to Chester V. Jackson
retired to retype and forward to Isobel Gough. Further Flossie McNichol was
sending her research to Francis Marion Cockrell Jr. and it is believed he
distorted or published overly early the findings.
Does this then prove a tie to the Cockrells of Ohio? They have said that
those brothers all fought in the Revolutionary War. Some of the descendants
recall that Simon Cockrell the Baptist Minister was a relation of theirs.
Any other conclusions? I really am trying to create a solid proven link to a
father of Simon Cockrell. I have more records to search but I am hoping to
figure out which Thomas Cockrell married Deborah and what her maiden name is.
The William Cockrell data will need to be another letter. I have a couple of
pages on him.
Hope to hear from you soon.
Bella
I would be anxious to learn what additonal information Bella has on William
Cockrell from Barbadoes. About 35 years back on a visit to the genealogical
section of the Library of Congress I ran across a book on early Virginia that
mentioned a William Cockrell in Barbadoes, but being foolish I did not copy
the information, now I wish that I had. Do you have any dates for William.
And I need a geography lesson, where is Barbadoes?
Here is what I have on the ancestry of Simon Cockrell: He was the son of John
Cockrell and Susan Tarplin. John was b-abt. 1726. This John cockrell was
the son of Thomas Cockrell and Elizabeth Ann Ramey and he was born abot 1697
in Va. This Thomas Cockrell was the son of John Cockrell and Elizabeth
Presley, this John was born or baptised 22 Nov 1669.
Jack Olson
Hello Fellow researchers,
Well I have been collecting much data on Simon Cockrell the Baptist Minister
1742-1839 and so far I think I may have my own answer for the sources of
information on the Susan Trapling married to John Cockrell. It is not from
the court records but I have the clues for where to find them now.
John Cockrell was the son of Thomas and some have been trying to incorrectly
tie this Thomas Cockrell to Andrew Cockrell who married Angel Corbell but he
is not. He is actually supposed to be a descendant of William Cockrell an
earlier immigrant. The records may be scant for connections but I have not
actually gathered them all at this date. I was hoping to get everyone in on
the fun. I have even seen a note where he took a detour to Barbadoes. I
realize that finding the actual records on Simon has begun to be a bore but
all of those records are needed to actually create our proof.
I am still collecting information on the descendants of Simon Cockrell and
meeting cousins all of the time. Oh, I would like to state that some have
records that Simon had brothers because he is referred to as a son in the will
of Thomas but he was actually a nephew of those sons named in the will. His
father being deceased and unable to provide for the future of Simon, the
portion of his fathers estate that would have gone to John was instead divided
between Simon and his sister. Thomas the grandfather named him son in the
will. Okay I will get back to the documents and read further but this is what
I have gathered thus far. The work is clearly set down and how many
generations it will take to get to William from Thomas is yet to be seen.
For the doubters I will mention that in my Mothers family some went to
Barbadoes and lived for a time but returned to generate many descendants.
These published articles have set for me an idea of what life must have been
like in that place for my ancestors and reading it aloud to my blind mother
gave the story some life for her as well. The story mentions letters sent by
ships and those survived the ages why not William Cockrell as well. There
does exist further documentation on this line and the best thing to do is
gather all we can on the more recent generations to better connect with the
upcoming developments in our Cockrell family history.
Hope to hear from you soon.

Looking for the parents of Robert Cockrell, b 1785 who married Prudence Talley

Hi Kay,
Thanks for your response regarding my query. I'm afraid I must plead guilty
to being the same person as Rosemary Turk! Crawford is my maiden name and
since it makes it so long I don't use Turk if I use Crawford. To most of my
friends I'm Rosmary Turk Kimble. The research and notes to which I refer
are from Aunt Wilma's (Cockrell)papers.
Aunt Wilma(Cockrell) noted on the letter that he "was probably William or
it could be "James who moved to MS." I assume that she thought it was
William since one of the sons carried the name William. The name Harrison
came from their grandmother, Rebecca Harrison Cockrell. The letter from Hal
Dyer to Aunt Wilma which accompanied the copy of the letter was dated March
9, 1948 so this was in the early days of their research. She noted that no
will had been found for Nathaniel Cockrell so perhaps at that time she
didn't know of Jonathan. I can only guess. She leaves notes all through
her papers....it's almost like 50 years later she's still pointing out
things to me that I need to check on.
Recently when I was in Rockwall doing some research on my CRAWFORD line, I
ran across some Cockrell records in an 1881 Probate record. I had my mother
with me so I quickly made a copy of it for her to read (Her mother was
Catherine Caldwell Cockrell, the daughter of Burr Ilia Cockrell). After I
got back to Beaumont, I sat down and read it and it turned out to be a
petition by James Rosborough Cockrell for Letters of Adm. of the Estate of
Burr Cockrell, dec'd. for an order of sale of 12 shares of stock in the
Charlotte Columbia & Augusta Railroad. The petition was dated June 18,
1881. Burr died in 1861. Unfortunately, I missed a page or two since I
didn't bother to read it since I thought I had every piece of paper on file
in the Court House relating to my Cockrells and was just trying to
"entertain" my 87 year old mother with something that would interest her
while I was digging. I'll go back and copy the rest the next time I'm home.
I'm really curious as to why 20 years lapsed before he applied for probate
unless it was because of the '"war" or perhaps just locating the stocks.
J.R. stated in his petition that Burr died without leaving a will. I have a
friend who is in the History Dept. at Lamar University as well as a big
railroad buff who has promised to find some information on this railroad.
Well, I've rattled on enough. Thanks again for your help.

Kay, I also have another Cockrell line from around the Austin area. My
children's g, grandmother on their father's side was a Cockrell. Her name
was Emma Frances Cockrell.....any kin to you??
Rosemary, After reading your note this morning regarding the sons of
Nathaniel COCKRELL and Rebecca HARRISON, I thought I possibly had some
information to share. Of course, this was at 4:30 a.m. Since I got home
this evening and looked at the query more closely as well as the Cockrell
information I have readily accessibly, I find I really can't add anything
else to this. There is another brother for whom I do not have a death
date -- Jonathan who married Harriet Hood.
If the letter means that her father died within a couple of months of Burr,
her father could not have been William because he d. 20 Mar 1839, age 45
years old and is buried in the Soule Chapel Church Cemetery in Noxubee Co,
MS. Many of Moses' family are buried there, including his mother Rebecca
and wife Charlotte as well as himself.
I reported on this family briefly in "The Cockrell Connection" Volume 3,
Issue 4 as well as Cockrell tombstone inscriptions in some counties of MS.
I reported a little more fully on this family in Volume 4, Issue 1 because I
had received additional information from Rosemary Turk regarding the
information.
I hope this is of some help to you.
