Subject: Re: [COCKE] Walter Cocke b. ?1600s in Eng/ d. 1738 in
SouthwartParish, Surry Co, VA....and descendants....
Hi June and all,
I have a possible connection to the Cocke family -- maybe someone can
help?
The will of Agnes (Cocke) Smith, d/o Stephen and Martha (Batte) Cocke
and wife of Richard Smith, has the following information:
Agnes (Cocke) Smith’s will (Amelia County, Virginia, Will Book 2,
page 1) lists as beneficiaries (one seventh of the estate to each):
Geoffrey Murrell, Joseph Hightower, Nathaniel Booth, daughter Sarah
Mayes, granddaughter Agness Clardy, granddaughter Mary Hightower
daughter of John Hightower, and daughter Lucy Milner. Executor was
grandson, John Cross. Dated August 16, 1773, probated March 24, 1774.
Does anyone know why Geoffrey Murrell was listed -- how was he
connected to Agnes? The reason I ask is because one of my oldest
brick walls is Frances Pryor Smith, wife of William Murrell and
father of Jeffrey (my line), of Virginia (started in Surry Co., ended
up in Lunenburg). The ONLY mention of William Murrell's wife by name
is in Tyler's Encyclopedia of Virginia Biography -- I paid a
professional genealogist to research this woman, and after several
months he could not find a SINGLE primary document that even
mentioned her by her first name. She seems to have died before 1758,
when her husband William Murrell signed a deed -- she would have had
to sign to "waive dower rights" had she still been alive at that time.
However sketchy Tyler's claim is, the fact that she is listed as a
Smith, and Agnes (Cocke) Smith lists "Geoffrey" Murrell as a
beneficiary, makes me wonder if Frances may have been a child of
Richard and Agnes (Cocke) Smith. I know she doesn't show up in the
usual lists of their children, but if she died young (15 years or
more before Agnes did), this may explain it.
Can anyone explain how Geoffrey Murrell ended up in Agnes' will, or
what the relationship between them were?
thanks for any help you can provide.
cheers,
Gordon Bonnet
