Hi all,
I have several Cocke families in my tree all from Virginia.
In Surry County, Virginia
Walter Cocke who was born in England came to America with some of his family
and died in 1738, my line is through his son, Thomas Cocke who married to
Hannah Hamlin, Thomas died in 1750, then their son, John Cocke who married Ann
Starke and he died in 1798, then their son, Walter Cocke who married Anne
Carter Harrison in 1788 and he died in 1802, then their son Walter Travis Cocke
b.1791 who married Susanna Virginia Coupland in 1816, through their daughter,
Ann Elizabeth Cocke who was born in 1818 and married to Milton Shepherd
Cottrell in 1840, she died in 1892.
That is where that surname ends on that side.
I also have a Richard Cocke 1753-1820, of Henrico County, Virginia on a
different side, whom I do not yet any any parents or siblings for. I have tried
the Cocke family history of Henrico County but did not find him there.
My line is through his daughter Sarah Cocke who married to Reuben Shepherd in
1793 died in 1822.
Let me know if you are related to any of the people that mentioned. Thank you.
God bless,
Beth

I wish to provide an updated profile of William Cade and his wife, Elizabeth Smith, because of new information found regarding Elizabeth Smith. There is slim to no evidence she was the daughter of Richard Smith, of Cumberland Co., NC and there is no evidence that this Richard Smith is the same Richard Smith, son of Richard and Agnes (Cocke) Smith.
The ancestry and details regarding the life of William Cade are accurate.
William CADE
- born 24 Aug 1735 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA
- son of Stephen and Mary Cade and grandson of Robert and Susannah (Crump) Cade
- died before the ennumeration of the 1790 Census
- served in the Revolutionary Army
- accompanied his family to NC as a small child
married (ca 1762)
Elizabeth [SMITH]
- born, say about 1740/4
- It is speculated she was the daughter of Richard Smith, as a son was named "Richard Smith Cade." A Richard Smith is found residing in Cumberland Co., NC. Deed records dating from the early nineteenth century list Elizabeth Cade as the sister of Montcalm and Noble Smith. There is no evidence to tie the abovementioned Richard Smith with Richard Smith, son of Richard and Agnes (Cocke) Smith, of Virginia. It is not entirely clear that the deed reference showing Elizabeth Cade as the sister of Montcalm and Noble Smith refers to the same Elizabeth Cade, widow of William Cade. So, Elizabeth (Smith) Cade's ancestry is unknown and it's not entirely proven that her maiden surname was Smith.
- alive, 1820, when the 1820 Census for Cumberland Co., NC was ennumerated.
The list below of William Cade's children is partially a reconstruction. Harllee's "Kinfolks" provides a listing of children, but provides no proof. It appears to be a reconstruction. Harllee's identification of the daughter, Anna, appears to be questionable, as the chronology is questionable, based on an approximation of her birth date calculated on her probable age at marriage.
Children:
1. Mary Cade, born about 1763, married 1782, Charles Wilson. Their Bible names her parents. Charles Wilson was residing near Elizabeth Cade in the 1820 Cumberland Co., NC Census.
2. Richard Smith Cade, born about 1766. No further information. Identified by Harllee as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
3. William Cade, born about 1769, said to have married Margaret Alston. Identified by Harllee as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
4. Wiley Cade, born about 1772. No further information. Identified by Harlee as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
5. James Weddell Cade, born 25 Nov 1755, m. Margaret McDaniel. Identified by Harllee as a son of William and Elizabeth Cade.
Is it possible that the Mary Cocke you ask about could have been a wife to
Richard Cocke?
I have a Mary Elizabeth Aston married to Richard Cocke, she would have been
his second wife.
I have the birthdate as 1629 as you suspect, but I have her death as 1655.
I also have her son William born in 1655.
The dates don't line up, but there is so much conflicting info on the web,
it's very confusing.
If this is the right Mary, her parents were Walter Aston Jr. and Hannah
(Jordan). This family can trace their lines to President George Bush.
Below is what I have on Richard Cocke, not that it sheds any light on Mary:
Baptised September 5, 1602 Stottesdon, Shropshire, England.
Richard was granted a patent on land along the James River to bring a group
of settlers to the colony. He settled along the James River before 1632,
and records of freight shipped to him are on line at the Viginia Library at
least as far back as 1636.
He was elected Sheriff of Henrico County in 1655 and also served in the
House of Burgesses. Richard also served as County Commander of Colonial
Militia, Henrico county.
Source: The Twentieth Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans.
There is some confusion about the children of his wives. There is overlap
in the ages and some of the info particularly on Elizabeth who shows she
married a Cocke, the a Blaise then a Doodes. There was an Elizabeth and a
William listed with both Mary Aston and Temperence Bailey.
Will dated 10/4/1665 is on record in Henrico County.
Buried in his orchard by the side of his 'early wife'.
Following is a deed recorded in James City:

I don't think you read my posting properly. You seem to be confused. Let me see if I can clarify my earlier posting.
William CADE (b.1735) married Elizabeth SMITH (b.1744).
Elizabeth SMITH (b.1744) was the daughter of Richard Smith, Jr. (1719-1799).
Richard Smith, Jr. lived in Amelia Co., VA and moved to Cumberland Co., NC. Richard SMITH, JR. was a son of Richard Smith and his wife, AGNES COCKE.
AGNES COCKE was a daughter of Stephen Cocke and Martha (Batte) Bannister; granddaughter of Thomas COCKE; and great-granddaughter of RICHARD COCKE and his probable first wife, Temperance BALEY.
Agnes Cocke's lineage is well documented and is outlined in COCKES AND COUSINS, AVENTURERS OF PURSE AND PERSON, 3rd Edition, as well as a number of other sources. Agnes (Cocke) Smith's children are named in the will of her husband, Richard Smith, which was proven 1760 in Lunenburg Co., VA. It includes her son, Richard (Jr.), who was the father of Elizabeth Smith, wife of William Cade.
I really have nothing that would confirm your Mary is descended from Richard.
About 1652 Richard Cocke (c.1600-1665) married for the second time Mary
Aston. They had a son William in 1655.
No other Williams or Marys fit those time frames that you have.
Sorry.

Elizabeth SMITH
-born 8 Jul 1744 in Amelia Co., VA
-dau. of Richard Smith, Jr. and granddaughter of Richard and Agnes (COCKE)
Smith
-alive, 1820, when the 1820 Census for Cumberland Co., NC was ennumerated.
married, 1762,
William CADE
-born 24 Aug 1735 in St. Peter's Parish, New Kent Co., VA
-son of Stephen and Mary Cade and grandson of Robert and Susannah (Crump) Cade
-died before the ennumeration of the 1790 Census when his widow, Elizabeth,
was listed as head of her own household in Cumberland Co., NC
-served in the Revolutionary War
Children:
1. Mary Cade, born 1763, married 1782, Charles WILSON.
2. Richard Smith Cade, born about 1766. No further information.
3. William Cade, born about 1769, said to have married Margaret ALSTON.
4. Wiley Cade, born about 1772. No further information.
5. [James] Weddell Cade, born 25 Nov 1775, m. Margaret McDANIEL.
For a good sketch of Agnes (Cocke) Smith's ancestry, see
ADVENTURERS OF PURSE AND PERSON, 3rd Edition, edited by John Frederick
Dorman, F.A.S.G., pages 87-92.
COCKES AND COUSINS, VOLUME 1, DESCENDANTS OF RICHARD COCKE (c.1600-1665),
pp. 1-3, 6.
A brief sketch of the Cocke ancestry of Elizabeth (Smith) Cade follows:
Richard Cocke (c1600-1665) m. Temperance Baley
Thomas Cocke (c1639-1697) m. Margaret Jones
Stephen Cocke (c1664-1717) m. Martha (Batte) Bannister
Agnes Cocke (1697-1774) m. Richard Smith (d.1760)
Richard Smith, Jr. (1719-1789) Father of Elizabeth (Smith) Cade
Deed records of Amelia Co., VA identify Richard Smith, Jr. as a "trader to
the Cherikees (sic)." This may have been his motive for settling in
Cumberland Co., NC where he can be found in deed records as early as 1763.
The Lumbee Indians were at one time known as the "Cherokee of Robeson County"
and it's possible that his trading extended to this Indian group.
I am more interested in Mary COCKE. I know very little about her save her
date of death in 1652. I believed she may have been born between 1630 and
1635. Her son William was born in 1652. I am interested to know if Mary is a
descendant of Richard or Thomas COCKE.

Was wondering if Mary COCKE who married John WYATT in 1650 was a descendant
of Richard COCKE. I believe that John and Mary may have died in England,
because none of the WYATT researchers have located their graves. They had
two children Edmund and William. Born 1651 and 1652. Edmund died in 1707 I
believe in Westmoreland County Va.
