To the Confederate Administration
Or
To the Custodian of Its Archives, Austin, Texas
Gentlemen:
The writer is the son of William Gabriel Cocke who died in the Austin
Confederate Home about fifteen years ago. I am anxious to ascertain
just when he entered the Confederate Service and from what County?
(Born 1842)
I know he was quite young, little more than a young teenager?
And I have always thought he entered the service from kerr County but
I want to be sure. Have been asked by the Committee (Centenniel) to
contribute an article to the Ridley and Cocke families as pioneers of
the County.
My aternal grandfather, Dr. J. C. Ridley, was authorized by an Act of
the Texas Legislature on Jan. 26th, 1856, to organize the County by
holding an election for County officers and selecting the County seat,
Kerrville as it turned out.
My paternal Grandfather, F. B. S. Cocke, served in the 16th
Legislature, 1878 and was a member of the Constitutional Canvention of
1874. But I am having trouble in finding out just when he moved from
Karnes County to Kerr County?
My Father was married in Center Point to my mother, Vanilla Cordette
Ridley in 1867 in Kerr County so his father FBS. Cocke must have come
to Kerr nprior to that date, but when?
If he entered the Confederate service from Kerr County then they must
have moved to Kerr County before the Civil War?
Any possibly help you can give me will be appreciated.
Gratefully yours,
Wm. A. Cocke.

Dear Mr. Cocke: Wm. G. Cocke or W.G.Cocke, Deceased Confederate
Pensioner. Pension File
No. 21541. Confederate Home No. 3208 Bexar
County, Texas.
.He entered the Men's Confederate Home at Austin, Texas, June 24,
1935.
>From the Texas State Archives, I received information that Wm. G.
Cocke first enlisted in the 29th Brigade of the Chas. A. Russell's
Helena Guards, Texas State Troops in 1861 in Helena, Karnes County,
Texas. Then I am of the opinion he later enlisted in Company C, 36th
also known as 32nd Texas Cavalry, Confederate States Army. From
information on file in the Texas State Archives, he enlisted in Helena,
Karnes County, Texas instead of Kerr County, Texas.
Very truly yours,
Robert S. Calvert
Comptroller of Public Accounts
