Hi, mr and All,
I recently discovered my ggggrandfather, Joseph Cox, emigrated from
England apparently with his brother, John. Both settled in Peoria
County, IL. Joseph was 50 yrs old in the 1860 census record and married
to Catherine Foster. Among their children were John A. Cox and my
gggrandfather, Oscar Joseph Cox, b. 1849, m. Esther Alma Post, who was
also from Illinois (Rockford).
Oscar fought with the 11th IL Cavalry. After the war, he and Esther
moved to Nebraska, settling in Johnson County. Their daughter Cora
Amelia, b. 1873, was my ggrandmother. I have the names of her siblings,
spouse, children.
If anyone is interested in COX in Illinois, I have other information I
can post to the list. Let me know. (All Peoria County stuff).
Barbara
I'm new on board. I have been trying to document
the names of the parents of David C. Cocke my
ggggrandfather, who died in Scott County VA circa
1826. The family originally was from Surry Couty. VA.
Also would like the names of his wife, Jemima Leach's parents.
supposedlly David and Jemima were married in VA circa 1775.
I have lots of info on the Cocke family.
mr and all,
I joined this list after being advised it included the subname COX and
other variants. There is no separate list for COX, so I am hoping to
connect with some fellow COX researchers here. Maybe the listowner
could advise us.

Hello,
I just joined this list and this is my first posting. I am searching
for information on the Cockes from Cass Co., Texas. Especially the
family of Benjamin Cockes that was a sherriff of Cass Co. in 1846-49 ( I
believe ). His wife was Lavina ? I am especially interested in Mary
"May" Cockes that married William TATE . Also there is a story that I
have read a "Little Bit " on, that B.B. Cockes and J. Cockes (brothers)
were tried for the murder of a man named HASS. This was in 1872. The
same year that their father Ben Cockes was murdered. I would like to
know the complete story if anyone knows of it. Thank you ahead of time
and I appreciate any information I can get...
When you reply to me off the list, please include enough of my orig.
message so that I will know what your are writing to me about. Thank
you..

Hey, Ya'll......
The Cocke line I am researching, other than the Virginia one that
everyone is posting about....is the line of REV. LARS KARLSSON LOCK (b.
1604 in Sweden; died Sept 1688 in New Sweden). Lars was married
twice......(1) Catherine ? and (2) Beata Lom.
With Catherine, Lars had 3 children (Elizabeth, Andrew, and Mans); with
Beata, he had 5 children (Catherine, Peter, John, Gustaf, and Beata). I
am the 8th ggranddaughter of Lars Karlsson Lock....
I have the book, "Descendants of The Reverend Lars Karlsson Lock,
1604 - 1688, Pastor in the Valley", by Edith M. Davis Locke, 1986, in
case anyone would like a look-up done.
Hope to hear from some kin of Lars Karlsson Lock.......

Cocke Researchers:
Here's some more info on the COCKE who died in Salado, TX on the Mier
Expedition.

http://www.tamu.edu/ccbn/dewitt/miersalado.htmhttp://www.smu.edu/~swcenter/tjgreen/tjg_home.htm
From Journal of the Texian Expedition against Mier by Gen. Thomas J.
Green 1845
"Poor Major Cocke, when he first drew the fatal bean, held it up between
his forefinger and thumb, and with a smile of contempt, said "Boys, I
told you so; I never failed in my life to draw a prize;" and then he
said to Judge Gibson, "Well, judge, say to my friends that I died in
grace." The judge, much affected at this last sad parting, showed it
from his tears. The major replied "They only rob me of forty years," and
then sat down and wrote a sensible and dignified letter of remonstrance
to General Waddy Thompson, the United States minister in Mexico; and
knowing that his remains would be robbed of his clothes after his
death, drew off his pantaloons, handed them to his surviving comrades,
and died in his underclothes."
I'm seeking information on Eliza Ann COCK ,b. March 2, 1828, in probably
East Felicinia,La. She married: Arron Calvin BANKSTON in East Felicinia in
1848.
After their marriage, they moved to Wilkinson County,Ms. Where Aaron worked
for a
A. J. HUFF as overseerer. Eliza's father may have been a Needham COCK from
Arkansas?? But not forsure. ANY help will be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Historical Association, 1952) Volume I, p. 368.
James Decatur COCKE was born near Richmond, VA, abt 1815. He was
educated for the bar, but decided to seek his fortune in a new cou;ntry
and immigrated to Mobile Alabama, where he worked as a printer on the
Chronicle. In 1837, Cocke came to Texas, ostensibly to establish a
newspaper at Brazoria in support of Mirabeau B. LAMAR's candidacy for
the presidency, but he turned the enterprise over to Theodore LEGER and
Algernon P. THOMPSON, who began publication of The People in February,
1838. COCKE was dubbed the "fighting cock" by the anti-Lamar press
because of his intense partisanship. In 1838 he issued a prospectus for
a weekly at Houston to be called the Banner of the Lone Star, but
apparently the paper never appeared.
COCKE served with the volunteer forces that defeated the COmanche in
1840. In 1842, he enlisted under Ewen CAMERON for the Mier Expedition
and was shot at Salado on March 25, 1843 as a result of the Black Bean
Episode.
