Your page is a great help to level set me and the new list
subscribers. Thank you for sharing the address and research.
In the interest of finding my GREEN connection to your COCKCROFT
family, I have a couple of questions:
Has anyone pursued the possibility that Jane STILL, widow of John
STILL who d. 1798, remarried Ogden Cockeroft? Does anyone know her
maiden name?
Investigation of John Still's estate papers might reveal some answers
since his will dictates a different division of the estate if his wife
remarries. Also the fact that John has minor children might provide a
link to their new step father, if any. Has anyone checked this out?
It is important to me to eliminate possibilities also. Jacob Green's
relationship to the Cockcrofts could be one of friendship and
convenience; I have leaned toward that idea for many, many years.

My Cockroft page, Knotty Roots and Gnarled Branches, has much information on
the families of Ogden and John Cockeroff/Cochroft and many records of the
area. Click the Cockroft of Ninety-Six District, South Carolina link to
access it. several researchers have contributed data. The URL is

Hope this helps,

I spent a couple of hours at the library today. On impulse - as I was
leaving, I did a search of the IGI for Ogden & John and found info
which was new to me. Unfortunately, I didn't have time to investigate
thoroughly.
There was a marriage for Ogden COCKCROFT on 8 May 1766 at Heptonstall,
Yorkshire, England. The time, place and name is right to be Ogden of
Edgefield.
I was in a hurry and didn't record the bride's name, but printed out
the data sheet. For some reason, the wife's name did not print and I
didn't notice this until now. Unfortunately, I didn't focus on her
name - just noted that the given name was not Jane and the surname was
not GREEN.) I will check it out next visit.
The following info was in the IGI for John COCKEROFT of Edgefield:
John COCKEROFT ma Mary STILL
Children:
Thomas b. c 1794
Catherine b. c 1797
Henry b. 16 Mar 1799
Benjamin b. 27 Jan 1800
James b. c 1802
Sarah b. 15 Mar 1804
daughter b. 1806
John b. c 1808
If anyone can verify, add or subtract from this data or has already
researched these records, please speak up.
Claire
My ancestor Jacob GREEN d. 1830 in Edgefield District, SC.
Documents in Edgefield prove that he had a close association with the
COCKEROFTs of Edgefield.
I have not been able to identify the father of Jacob GREEN, so
I'm investigating several families with whom he is closely connected
in Edgefield to see if I can trace the GREENs with any of the
associated families.
If anyone has a COCKCROFT/GREEN connection, please send me a
note so I can investigate the possibility it is also my GREEN family.
Thanks.
Claire
Hi all,
Welcome to the new COCKCROFT list. There has been a delay in
getting the administrivia resolved, but we are now up and running, and
the list will be announced to various other lists.
This list will include all the variant spellings of the name i.e.
Cockeroft, Cockroft and many more I've encountered, and there are
probably some spellings & mis-spellings I haven't seen.
I will post my COCKCROFT brick wall in a separate email and hope
that each of you will post your challenge in this family.
Also it you have any good links to pages that include COCKCROFTs,
please post them to the list. Good luck to all.
Claire
Greetings!
Just signed on to the list and hope I might get some leads on a VERY
LONG SHOT!!! I'm looking for a COCKCROFT cousin in England during World
War II, in hopes of finding a connection to my BOLTON/BATEMAN lines in
Scotland and England!
I have a letter written from MRS. CONNIE COCKCROFT of 6 Thrum Hall Lane,
Halifax, Yorks. on October 2, 1944. (Return address is Mrs. M.C.
Cockcroft, but the letter is signed "Connie.") The letter speaks of
HAROLD
LEONARD, who married a girl from Plymouth and had son PETER (who
was one year old as of letter dated 10/2/1944)
ENID, married with son three years old. Her husband was in
Fleet Air Arm
RENE, who was in college
Connie Cockcroft wrote this letter to her cousin, GEORGE HENRY BOLTON,
of Marblehead, MA. George Bolton was the son of RICHARD JAMES BOLTON
and MARY ANNE BATEMAN (more on them below).
I have another letter from a cousin named HELEN NISBET of 4 Picken
Street, Riccarton, Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland, also written to her
cousin George Bolton in Massachusetts This letter is dated Dec 19,
1943. Helen speaks of
JOHN, her son, who served in Trinidad 1942-1945
HARRY, her brother (don't know what Helen's maiden name was)
Mrs. DUFF, her sister
Another letter was written 5/4/1944 and mentions the death of Helen
Nisbet's "Aunt Ellen" who died 4/30/1944 at the age of 86. Aunt Ellen
was buried alongside Helen's mother and father in Kilmarnock Cemetery.
Any leads on ANY of these names would be greatly appreciated!
Listed below is the information I have on my BOLTON and BATEMAN lines
that I am trying to connect (somehow) to COCKCROFT and NISBET......
Trying to identify the parents of my great-grandfather, RICHARD JAMES
BOLTON and my great-grandmother, MARY ANNE BATEMAN.
RICHARD JAMES BOLTON, b. 11/8/1868 in ??Staplestown, England. His
parents were HENRY and SARAH (?) BOLTON.
His wife was MARY ANNE BATEMAN b. 1857-8 or 1862 in ??Cardiff,
Wales (best info I have), daughter of JOHN and CATHERINE (?) BATEMAN.
That's all I have on them!
Richard and Mary Anne came to the US in 1888-9, purportedly via
Belfast. She was pregnant, but they didn't marry until they got to the
US, and my grandfather was born 3/5/1889. So evidently there wasn't alot
of discussion about the unhappy families left behind as my mother knows
nothing more than you read here!
As I mentioned, RICHARD JAMES BOLTON was the son of HENRY and SARAH (?)
BOLTON. His siblings were
JAMES (in England, d. 4/15/1895)
ISAAC (came to MA)
WILLIAM (came to MA)
MARY ELLEN (in Scotland)
SARAH ANNIE (came to MA)
ELIZABETH (never married, stayed in England)
SUSAN (never married, stayed in England)
My guess is that the "Aunt Ellen" Helen Nisbet was referring to in the
letter may have been MARY ELLEN, and that Helen Nisbet may be a daughter
of JAMES BOLTON. But this is truly a guess!
Richard and Mary Anne (Bateman) Bolton's children were:
WILLIAM JAMES (my line)
SARAH JENNIE
RICHARD JAMES BOLTON, Jr.
GEORGE HENRY (recipient of letters)
CHARLES ISAAC
Again, thanks for any leads you might have on the connection to the
COCKCROFT family in England!
