I have Robert Cockburn, Sarah Smith, and their eleven children, along with ancestors dating back to approx 1600 in my tree.
I have some of their descendants dating until approx 1996, and would love to fill in the "missing names" on the more recent Cockburn descendants.
Contact me via Ancestry messaging if you're interested in comparing notes?
Cheers,
Tracy (nee Cockburn) Trim

Hi Linda Ann,
I have many "James Cockburns" in my database, but I don't seem to have a spouse named Robina Stobs Wainless.
I do have several "James Cockburns" who would have been born in the right time period and region, however. Do you have the names of James' parents? Or do you have the names of James and Robina's children? This might help us to pinpoint the proper family. It could be that I haven't yet researched the "right" James Cockburn to the point of adding a spouse for him.
I have more than 4200 people with the surname "Cockburn" in my tree; I suspect I have your James (or one of his relatives).
Cheers,
Tracy

Hi Danese,
Well...interesting! I have definitely traced Cockburns to a family of Cogburns in Texas (and before that, to Arkansas and Georgia), and have confirmed a distant Cogburn cousin both through conventional research and Y-DNA test results.
Consequently, I may have some of your family in my database.
I will send you an email, and we can compare notes.
Cheers,
Tracy

I really don't know. Our family name was Cogburn and my family has been in the south since the mid-1700's. I have not been able to track earlier than that. Cockburn is a close match and the possibility is there. I have not been able to track any earlier. I feel they were probably Scots, the other side of the family is Irish and they have the same track, that is living in the same place for the last 200 years. May have been part of the debtors prision releasees, or some other path. You can also also e-mail me at patstrks(a)aol.com Thanks for writing. Danese Dykes
