Hi Bruce,
Yes, I've considered umpteen possibilities, and I'll have to look through my records and data to recall why exactly I settled on the particular lineage recorded on my tree...
In the meantime, I've sent you a member message with my email address; we can continue the discussion that way if you like?
Thanks for posting!

Hello again,
I just looked at your posted family tree. We both have John Cockburn, born Dec 23, 1687 in Duns. Then our reconstructed trees differ going earlier than John. I took John's father to be (a different) Patrick Cockburne, born Oct 9, 1671 near Duns. Patrick married Kathrein Duns (b. Oct 24, 1670). Patrick's father I took to be Archibald Cockburne (bapt Jan 30, 1649 at Duns). Archibald was married to Alysone Currie (bapt June 25, 1643). Archibald's father was Thomas Cockburn, born Feb 28, 1622 near Duns. Thomas married Margrat Olliphant. And Thomas's father was John Cockburn, who married Christain Sanderson. Did you also consider the same individuals in your own tree?

Hi Tracy,
Thanks for your reply!
I was interested to hear that your family also received phone calls for the singer/songwriter. I used to get the odd phone call myself, and e-mails from fans. One time somebody in the States phoned me up to see if I was available to do some gig. Another time some woman asked me if I could look over a few songs that her boyfriend had written since she thought that they were quite good. Like the "other" Bruce Cockburn, I am originally from Ottawa. But I've shown very little sign of musical talent so far, alas.
Back to family history research. Yes, I do agree that Christian was often used as a given name for me in Scotland. I have one Christian in my family tree who was born near Duns in 1780. I'll e-mail my family tree so that you can have a look (these posts do not preserve any line formating.) The early records are certain to contain errors because of the incomplete and/or ambiguous church records. I'd be very interested in hearing of any corrections that you might be able to send to me.
The Y-DNA study is not going well so far since few male Cockburns have responded to me postings. What I seem to have determined so far is that the Cockburns are very closely related to the Dunbars. This should not be a big surprise since the two families are from the same general region in the Borders of Scotland. But I'd like to start sketching out the major genetic lineages of the Cockburn family to provide independent evidence to support or refute speculations in the Cockburn family history as constructed from church records. So if you have any living male Cockburn's in your maiden family, then please try to encourage them to participate. The genetic tests do not reveal medical problems--they're more like a fingerprint that can be used to measure how closely related people are.
Thanks again!
Bruce

I have since uncovered the forebears of John Cockburn b. 1775, and was misinformed regarding his father.
I now have reliable evidence tracing back to Lancelot Cokburne (c. 1600) (probably Edinburgh region). I have many "side branches" to this line of Cockburns and will gladly compare notes with anyone tracing Cockburns in the Border Regions of Scotland and Northumberland, England.

I have recently purchased the 3-volume set of books entitled "BERWICKSHIRE MONUMENTAL INSCRIPTONS - pre 1855".
These volumes are categorized alphabetically by names and by church parishes all throughout Berwickshire, and list the details of gravestones dating prior to 1855.
If you have name/place and approximate date details on any Cockburns in Berwickshire, I will gladly check the reference books for additional or confirming information.
'Also interested in comparing information and possibly linking family trees with anyone researching Cockburns in Berwickshire - particularly in Duns and/or Ayton.
'Looking forward to hearing from other Cockburn descendants!
Cheers,
Tracy (nee Cockburn) Trim

Hi Bruce (not the singer/songwriter!) (we often received phone calls intended for Bruce/singer/songwriter's father when I was a child),
I am also descended from the Cockburns of Duns, but - alas - I am a female, so not a candidate for your genetic study.
I just wanted to point out that you have a CHRISTIAN COCKBURN on your list of Cockburns. I feel quite certain that this Christian was - in fact - a female, as this was a very common feminine name in Scotland at that time. (Likewise "Murray", believe it or not!)
I feel quite certain that my Cockburn lines intersects yours, and would love to confab on data if you've the time or inclination. 'Sorry that I cannot help with the genetic study.
Cheers,
Tracy (nee Cockburn) Trim

Although you posted 8 years ago, I remain hopeful that we can still link our family trees together.
Cheers,
