In the book it states that "Daniel Royer married Mary Elizabeth Cockburn
August 7, 1825, in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1827 Daniel took 200 acres of
land in Shelby County, Tennessee and the same day one Pleasant Cockburn
took 100 acres of land next to Daniel's. This Pleasant Cockburn must have
been a relative of Mary Elizabeth, as their youngest son was named Pleasant
May Royer."
On another page it states"Mary Elizabeth Cockburn was born June 8, 1807.
The census records list her birth place as North Carolina, but two other
records state Alabama. Her ancestors came from Scotland.
Mary must have had many sorrows in her life. She was 42 when her husband
died, and all six of her children were still at home. Sarah Ann Royer Dowler,
her only daughter, died in 1855 at about age 24. She lived to see the death
of four of her grandsons. Her son John H. Royer died, apparently unmarried,
between 1860 and 1870. The History of Bond County, published in 1915 states
that Mary was an unusually sensible and resourceful woman and determined
to take her boys out of the Village (Greenville) and on to a farm after
Daniel died. She did this by purchasing 40 acres in 1853 on Dudleyville-Hookdale
Road tow miles west from Route 127, near Dudleyville, IL. There are no
building on this land today.
Mary died June 1, 1878, at the home of her son Pleasant May Royer, and
is buried at Campground Cemetery south of Dudleyville, IL. Her two sons,
pleasant May and Jacob Daniel, honored their mother by placing a tombstone
at her grave.
The book title is" Mary Elizabeth Cockburn and Daniel E. Royer"
