Hi all. My daughter ran a diagnostic on our computers using McAfee on-line
services http://www.mcafee.com and found a kak.worm on my operating
systems, which means it may have been there a while. a worm is not like a
virus: it slowly works its way in--like a tapeworm! It usually passes
itself thru internet and email programs, and will also do its own backup
file! It probably came from someone's email I downloaded, or a site I
visited, and since I only visit genealogy or music sites, those who sent me
referrals may have unwittingly "caught" the worm also. We talked about a
worm on one of my lists a while back, so I am assuming others have had this
or have it and don't know it.
Please run your diagnostics. McAfee deleted our worm, but didn't tell us
how, so I can't tell you what to do about it.
we also need to be careful about exe. files we open or pass on, anything
with kak. or unknown designations, but usually they hide in exe. files.
Mine showed up in an exec. bat file!
good luck, and my apologies for perhaps passing it on.....
