Not tracing the Cock family. Wanted you to know there is a terrific genealogy record in a Bible on Ebay right now. Wished I were this lucky for my family. Donna Alumbaugh
Family Bible dated c. 1770. The Bible is missing the first few pages and no publisher is known. Both the front and back inside covers are neatly penned to include a numerous members of the Cock family. The history is quite detailed and includes the name, birth date (some include the time of birth), the relationship of the member to others in the family, baptism, and a marriage to the Nichols family. Some of the entries include death information, including a member who died in passage to America (latitude at point of death included). The location of some family members is noted New York, the Bible may be from there or a bordering New England state. The Bible is quite worn to the cover, but the binding is still remarkably good and not falling apart. The pages are supple and not brittle. Other than the first few pages that are missing, it is quite nice all around. It can still be handled and enjoyed for many years to come without fear of damage.
The first two births have the year under the ancient binding tape around the edge of the book, the third is dated 177.. (the last number also under tape). The fourth birth is 1780. Since these first four entries are all siblings with the parents being William and Betty Cock, one can assume the original date of the Bible around 1770, although it may be earlier.
The following Cock names are included (listed in order of entry):
William * Henry * Richard * Martha * Simon & Peter (twins) * James * Joseph * Elizabeth * Jeremiah * Betty (died at sea) * "Mr. Cock" marriage to Sarah Nichols * Alexander * George * Jesiah * Mary * Sarah * George * John.
