Dear Colleen,
my Cock ancestors were in America many years before
yours left England. Of course, you realize that your answers
will be in England. You are fortunate to know the ship, date
of departure, and port, so that is where you start. There should
be some records. You may find that they come from Ireland
originally. If Roman Catholic, they were more likely to be Irish.
If not, then look in the part of England near Plymouth. I do
not think that they were forced to leave England (convicts)
at that lat date, but a check would be part of the search.
Good Luck!

Hello List members
I am Colleen & I am new to this list & am hoping someone may be able to help
me in my search for my g-grandfather's background.
His details that I've been able to discover are:
James Cock b. 4 April, 1850 in Cornwall, m. Jane Tippett [place & date
unknown]. They emigrated to Sth. Australia, sailing on the "S.S.
Forfarshire", dep. from Plymouth & arr. Pt. Adelaide on 1 Sept. 1876.
James & Jane sailed with 4 small chn. one of whom died en route to Sth.
Aust. They had 9 more chn. born at various places around the state while
James was working for the railways.
I found on the IGI a James Cock , son of Thomas & Ann, c. at Kenwyn on 24
May, 1850.
Can anyone help me make the connection with either info. or advice as I am
new to this?
Sincerely
Colleen Wright
