Dorothy Alice O'Meal Cochrane, of Ripley, N.Y.,
died on Monday July 15 2013, at her home.
She was born on October 16, 1922, in Newark, NY to the late Grace Sedgwick O'Meal and Edward Jacob O'Meal.
Dorothy graduated from Newark High School and then from Cornell University College of Home Economics in 1943. After working for the Cooperative Extensions in Oswego and Chautauqua Counties, she became a full-time homemaker.
While at Cornell, she met her late husband Andrew James Cochrane, Jr. whom she married June 26, 1944 in Newark, N.Y. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary prior to his death in 2009. They owned & operated Cochrane Farms, Inc. in Ripley for over 50 years before passing the torch on to the 6th and 7th generations of the Cochrane family.
Dorothy was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Ripley where she formerly served as an elder, deacon, Sunday School teacher and superintendant and Women's Circle member and officer. She enjoyed gardening, growing flowers, and had a gift for flower arranging, cake decorating and sewing clothes for her children.
Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by her sister, Agnes Leeuwen; and a grandson, Gregory Cochrane.
Survivors include her daughters: Mary Beth Chess and husband, Donald, of Ripley, and Janet Niebauer and husband, Craig, of Naples, Florida; her sons: Jack Cochrane of Ripley and his life partner, Marcia, of Westfield, N.Y., and Douglas Cochrane and wife, Alisa, of Casper, Wyoming: 15 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, Ernest D. O'Meal of Macedon, NY, and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call at the William D. Elkin Funeral Home, 65 South Lake Street, North East on Friday 4:00 pm to 8:00 p.m. and are invited to attend a funeral service Saturday at 11:00 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church in Ripley. Elder Phillip Johnson Officiating. Private interment in Quincy Rural Cemetery at a later date. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Ripley, 20 West Main Street, Ripley, NY 14775 or Ripley Hose Company #1, West Main Street, 14775.
