Hello Desiree.
My GG Grandmother was Marion Cochrane Born 1828 on board a ship Bordes of Antarctica off the coast of the Cape of Good Hope. She was the daughter of James and Margaret Cochrane.
James was an a member of the Argyle Highlanders. Apparentlly an engineer a builder of bridges. As the story goes, The Regiment was on its way to Africa to Quell a Zulu uprising.
This is what I've been told but I'm not sure of the accuracy of the information. The family returned to Scotland and she Married my GG Grandfather John Skilling and they immigrated to Canada about 1850 and eventually settled in Owen Sound Ontario. This town had a large shipbuilding facility and John was a Ships carpenter. In 1864, John and his brother were working on a top mast when a tornado blew them off the bast and killed them Both.
Are these people part of you line? I've no info of them in Scotland. If you can fill in any blanks I would be most grateful.
Regards
Bob Skilling

This gentleman (born abt 1830 in Ireland - died 1893 in Devon, England after a career in the army (11th Regiment of Foot, Devonshire Regiment) was my great, great grandfather. He married Elizabeth Annie Deacon in Exeter in Dec 1857 and his marriage certificate gives his father as John Cochrane - deceased - a farmer.
If anyone can throw any light as to where in Ireland he was born - and, more importantly - anything about his father - I would be very grateful
