hi. we have a family mystery. my greatgrandfather, leroy adams cochrane, changed his surname from cockrum to cochrane. family lore says that he believed that it was "supposed to be cochrane". he was a learned man, a physician, druggist & apothecary. i am in possession of a portion of his journal describing his journey to colorado & back to illinois in the early 1870s. he was born in 1849 in spring garden, jefferson. illinois. he taught school in horse prairie, illinois, describing it as "a d-d dull place". set out for colorado on april 6, 1871 joining a wagon train. arrived at denver on august 25, 1871, "friday". decided that colorado was not for him. bought a train ticket to kansas city, and came home. on april 8,1871, identifies himself as "leroy a. cockrum". on may 22, 1872, he identifies self as, 'leroy a cockrane". by august 12,1880, his letterhead identifies him as " dr. l.a. cochrane, druggist & apothecary, eureka springs, arkansas".
the mystery is this: do we descend from the cochrane clan, or from the english cockerham line? there are several discrepancies in the cockerham line. if anyone has done any research on the ancestors of leroy's father, john cockrum, b.abt 1815 in todd county, kentucky, d. c1858 in jefferson county, illinois, we would love to have further information. thanks all, susan
