Small correction - my James was born and baptised April 15th 1771, not 1781.

I too have a JAMES COCHRANE. Mine was born on 15 April 1781 and baptised the same day in Abbey, Paisley; he was the eighth child of Thomas COCHRANE and ANN KERR. (Old family bibles are wonderful sources of information!).
James had a daughter MARGARET COCHRAN(E) b. 10 Nov 1796 according to the family bible who married her cousin THOMAS LYLE. I am not certain who James married but think it was MARGARET ALLEN; the daughter of this couple was b 14 Nov 1796 and baptised 17 Nov 1796 in the High Church, Paisley (IGI/PR record). Margaret Cochrane Lyle died in Glasgow 17 Feb 1854. Several of her children went to Australia.
As far as I know there has never been a connection of my Cochran(e) family with Ireland.
Nancy

Hello,
I was interested to read your message. My Great Great Grandfather was HUGH HALL COCHRAN(E) from Northern Ireland.
But his father was JAMES COCHRAN(E) and my COCHRAN(E)'S originated in RENFREWSHIRE.
HUGH'S father JAMES was born about the time you say your JAMES was born. so it would be interesting to see if there is a connection.
My HUGH HALL COCHRAN(E) was a watch and clock maker in LURGAN, Northern Ireland.
HUGH Married a MARGARET BELSHAW.
Hope to hear from you again.
Heppsy
