Message Board Post:
I am searching for information on the Cochrane/Cochran/Cochron name from (Scottish origin)Dublin, Ireland to England about 1690-1765.
My ancestor, Nancy Agnes Cochrane, was a daughter of the Earl of Dundonald who, at age 13, is said to have run away to America, taking her maid and her jewels, rather than marrying a cousin...see below for details. G. C. B. Cochran- i. e. Cochrane is one name mentioned by researchers. Some other comments I've read:
Father's Mother, M. T. Smoot..."Grandmother was a Cochran and a sister to the late Earl of Dundonald...The Cochran family have ever been fighters upon the seas and are related to the nobility of England." Daddy [W.C.A. Smoot, Jr.]-a letter written by W.C.A. Smoot, Jr. who was a descendant in 1909.
"After the death of his [David Hunter] first wife, by whom he had two children,he married Nancy Agnes COCHRON, who was grandmother of Margaret T. Smoot. She was a native of Ireland and was born in 1750. Her parents were wealthy,
owning a large landed estate and other property. When Nancy Agnes was only 13 years old, her parents wished her to marry a cousin of her mothers, whom she disliked and rather than marry him, she concluded to leave her
father's house, home and friends, which she did, taking her maid Uriral?. They disguised to avoid detection, they escaped through a crevice in the wall, taking her jewelry
with her with which to pay their passage to America, where they arrived,in about six months [about 1763], sick and destitute. She there married Mr. [David]Hunter and bore him ten children." original source--A. O. Smoot boxes at BYU [Provo, Utah, USA]. BYU Special Collections, Mss. 896, Box 2 folder 7.
There may have been an acquaintance of the Cochran/Cochrane-Hunter families as both are Scottish and came from the Dublin, Ireland area about the same time period.
Would appreciate a lookup if anyone has access to ship's list arriving from London, England to New York or Philadelphia, Pennsylvania harbors, 1762-1764 era.
The book, THE FIGHTING COCHRANS, has recounts of military deeds of 6? generations of Cochran males.
Being a noble family, I know there are records out there with detailed genealogy; I just don't have access to them and would appreciate any information.
Thanks in advance, Lana, w4ctk(a)farmerstel.com
