I was amused about your reference to the 9th Earl of Dundonald. Our family had the same legend, the chap they claimed was our Earl and a Admiral turned out to be a Sgt.Major in the cavalry.and his name at that stage was Coughran, !!!. However when I researched the true facts his story proved equally more interesting. Our family came out in 1853 from County Down Ireland. They changed their name to Cochrane by 1853

A family legend says my gg-grandmother, Elizabeth Cochran, wife of John G.
Cochran, fled to Canada during the Civil War probably after the death of her
husband at Helena, AR. in one of the first battles involving Ar troops.
This family was in AR as early as 1825 while it was still a territory.

Have you checked with the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild? They have
ships cross referenced by departure location, arrival location, date,
captain, name of passenger. Look there. Their web site is

Iam interested in Cochrane geneaology.
Do you know the names of the books written about Admiral Cochrane or any details
about his date and place of birth? I would be interested in hearing from your
brother if he has information to share.

Hi there:
Our family of Cochrane's decent from Admiral Cochrane. There are seveal books
written about him. My father Edward Grant had a complete geneology, which
unfortunately was loaned to a family member and never returned. My brother
is still searching for one. My father lived in Montreal, my brother is now
in Ontario. Let me know if you would like his e-mail.

have been trying to research my fasmily history without much luck. I was born Oct 29, 1949 in Hamilton, ON. My father is Gordon Cochrane, born Jly 18, 1925. His father was Gordon Cochrane, but I don't have birth date or where born. One of mt grandfather's brothers was Jack Cochrane who was an engineer for the CPR. I believe that my grandfathers father was Thomas Cochrane who was married to a well known harpist and at one time owned a tavern in Woodstock ON.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone with information as I would like to discover if I decend from the Irish or Scottish Cochranes.

Please does anyone know any information on George Cochrane? He was my husband's GGGrandfather-Married Jane Wallace and had a son -James Charles (08/17/1856) in Orange County. We think he might have come from Scotland but are not sure, could have come to New Brunswick before settling in NY.
James Charles Cochrane married Adeline Olin and settled in Broadhead, Wisconsin.
Thanks for any help you can give.
