I have a Thomas Cochran who came to Philadelphia from Ireland. I don't have very much information on him. He is my GGG-GF and in addition to his son William Cochran, (My GG-GF) he is reported to have had at least two other sons, George Cochran and Andrew Cochran.
William Cochran b. Dec. 01, 1818 Philadelphia d. Mar. 31, 1901 in Meriden, CT
George M. Cochran b. Aug. 13, 1823
Andrew ?. Cochran b. about 1830.
The death certificate for William states that his father, Thomas, was born in Ireland and that his mother (no name listed) was born in Bethnay, CT.
I am hoping that there might be a tie with some of the Cochrans from Pennsylvania as it is unlikely that Thomas came to this country by himself. I will share my information with anyone who has some information on Thomas or his sibblings. Email me direct if you wish. w4ppn(a)aol.com

Hello!
I also have Cochrans that worked in the Diamond mines in South Africa. I
would love to talk to see if there is a connection! Here is the story that I
got from my cousin. My Cochrans are from Scotland and are descended from a
union between Margaret Cochrane and William Hunter. Their first born was
Robert Cochran, father of the Sam Cochran mentioned below.
Thanks!
Alex
Sam Cochran was trained as an Engineer in America with Singer. He left America
before 1899 and was involved in the Anglo Boer War 1899-1901.He joined the
Railway Pioneer Regiment founded on the 18 December 1899 by an American L.J.
Seymour also an engineer. The regiment had 4 battalions with 1000 men per batt
by 1900.Miners from the Transvaal formed its ranks and it was led by
Maj.J.Kepper after 1900.Their task was to repair the railway lines from the
Cape to Pretoria.Sam Received the Anglo Boer war Medal for this Campaign. The
regiment was disbanded after the war and was recalled at the start of the
First world war and the troops repaired the lines in German South West
Africa(now Namibia)Sam received 3 medals for his services and was also

disbanded after the war,he remained in the Transvaal now (Gauteng) and worked
on the Gold and diamond mines. He was working at a Mine at Leopardsvlei near
Krugersdorp when my Grandmother (Violet) was born. I was told he had some
involvement with Cecil John Rhodes the founder of Rhodesia(now Zimbabwe)and
Banie Banato( spelling may be incorrect)a diamond miner and dealer on the
mines in Johannesburg. They had something to do with the De Beers group in
South Africa.Violet told me that a photo of Sam with a group of miners is
held at the Johannesburg Club.A Gentlemans club.

My grandfather, James Cochrane, was born in Edinburgh, SCT. His father's name was Francis Cochrane and his mother's name was Catherine Anne Campbell. I am not sure of his birth date, but he had a brother Francis Augustus Cochrane. My grandfather left Edinburgh when he was 12 years old to work on ships that went between Scotland and England and later to South Africa and the U.S. He was on a ship that took supplies to the Union forces during the Civil War. He homesteaded in Skagit county, in Washington State. Hope this helps you. God bless. Marilyn
