Since there has been some discussion on Irish Cochran(e)s, and Cochran(e)s
from SC and AL, I would like to post my line in the hopes of anyone having a tie-in.
Tradition goes that our "Irish" ancestor came to this country through Charles
Town (Charleston), SC.
Thanks,
Karen A. Cochran Renfrow

Jim,
You man need to look in Lawrence and Independence Counties in Ar. My
gg-grandfather was John G. Cochran and on one of the censuses, there was a
Hugh Cochran living next door to him as head of house and his mother, Hanna,
was living with him. John G. had borthers James and William. John came to
Ar in about 1825 and his brothers followed a few years later. Johns wife was
named Elizabeth and I suspect but am not sure she was a Wommak.

I am hunting for my Cochran connection in South Carolina. My GGG-grandfather
and two sons, Robert and John came to the USA in 1839, stopping first in
Cochranton, PA and then Westfield, NY.
They had family that came to the USA in the late 1700's through Charleston,
SC. Their names were John, David, Rachael and Janet. This is from research
an aunt of mine, who is now gone, did back in the 1950's. Unfortunately, I
have no idea where she got this information other than probably from
interviewing my G-grandfather who was in his 90's at the time. Her research
says that these Cochran's were responsible for many of the Cochran's living
in the Southern states today.
Would enjoy connecting with someone who might think they know more about this
family. Our Cochran's came from County Down in Ireland, evidently living
very near Belfast. It is thought that the family came from Scotland prior to
Ireland, but we have no proof of anything or where they may have lived.
Hugh was born in 1786 and married and Margaret Vernon or Margaret McDonald
(not sure which). Their son Robert was born in 1820 and John in 1822.
Whether they had other children, I don't know. I can't help but think they
did, but haven't been able to find anything. Robert married and Elizabeth
(Eliza) Ann Cochran. Whether there was any relation between the two, I have
no idea, but from what my aunt wrote, these Cochran's came from the
Pittsburgh, PA area. I haven't been able to locate any of her family, other
than a brother named John who headed west and lived in Washington State.
Thanks for listening.
Jim Cochrane
