I recently received a positive DNA link to a descendant of Lazarus Andrew Cochran who was born August 25, 1827 in Lauderdale County, AL and died three miles north east of Mount Pleasant, Titus Co., Texas, on March 28, 1910. The State of Texas death record shows he was the son of Robert Cochran and ------- Lamb.
The 1880 census shows that Lazarus was born in Alabama, his father in North Carolina and his mother in Tennessee.
I found the marriage record of his parents, Robert Cochran and Elizabeth Lamb in Lauderdale County, AL on October 8, 1826.
The Northern Standard (Clarksville, TX) of January 6, 1849, page 3 ran the following:
NOTICE
Whereas the undersigned was duly appointed by the honorable County court of Titus county, at the September term 1848, administrator on the estate of Robert Cochran, late of said county, this is therefore to notify all persons indebted to said estate to make immediate payment, those having claims against the estate to present the same to me duly authenticated within the time prescribed by law, or they will be forever barred: this November 30th, 1848. LAZARUS A. COCHRAN
Lazarus A. Cochran is listed in the Texas General Land Office Master Book -- State Abstracts of Titus County, TX to August 31, 1941 -- as patentee of 160 acres in Titus County, dated 2 Feb 1853.
As I have gone looking for the earlier ancestry of Lazarus Cochran's father, Robert, a few roadblocks have appeared. The 1830 census of Lauderdale County, AL shows six Cochran households. Robert is listed with a family of 3 -- a male and female aged 20 - 29 and a male under 5 (doubtless son Lazarus). The closest Cochran families in the order of the census was one headed by William Cochran, with a male aged 50-59, female aged 40-49, and a male aged 15-19 -- this entry occurs on the page after Robert's. On the page before Robert's entry is one for John Cochran, with one male and female aged 20-29 and one male and one female aged under 5. There are three other Cochran families in the county, two headed by a William Cochran and another by another Robert.
As I've checked posted internet lineages of Lazarus Cochran, several state his father was Robert Cochran, born 1802 in NC and died in 1845 in Swannano Creek, Texas. This Robert Cochran is also alleged to be the son of a Robert Thomas Cochran 24 Dec 1781-1870 who was born in Mecklenburg Co., NC and died in Hacklesburg, Marion Co., AL.
However, findagrave Memorial# 101851385 for Robert O. Cochran states he was born 1802 in Mecklenburg County, NC and died June 27, 1854 in Cass County, TX,. The findagrave entry goes on to say he was "the son of Robert Thomas Cochran and Sarah Hemegen, one of 11 children in this marriage. The Family moved to Hacklesburg, Marion County, Alabama where they homesteaded 50 acres and purchased 1000 acres in 1827-8, In the book "North West Alabama" Volume I page 218 by Clark states that Robert's father Robert Thomas Cochran was the first white man to settle in North West Alabama.
In 1840 The Robert O Cochran family moved to Cass County Texas where the purchased 600 acres in the County. Cass County Deed book Vol C Page 479
In 1854 Robert Passes away and A. W. "Ambrose Wesley" Cochran, is Appointed Administrator, 27 June 1854, Cass Co. Texas, Probate Book, Vol C, Pages 163, 167, 168
In 20 January 1860 Belinda passed away and A. W. "Ambrose Wesley" Cochran, is Appointed Administrator of her estate. Cass county Texas probate Book 1860 pages,43."
---------------------------------------------
Looking back to Lauderdale County, AL a William Cochran, aged 89, born N.C. was still living there in the 1860 census. My gut reaction is that these families have gotten mixed up -- ant that probably William Cochran is the more likely father of Robert Cochran (d. 1848), and the grandfather of Lazarus A. Cochran.
Since finding the "right" line going back to Scotland is imperative for my further DNA investigations, I don't have much choice but to resolve this discrepancy.
Has anyone looked into this branch of the Cochran family?
Thank you.
