Hi! I'm really desperate after beating my head against this particular brick wall since day one. Years later with much more experience and comfort in research has not helped at all. I hope that someone here may have at least some knowledge of the following people and can give me a new place to start chewing. I'll try to keep it simple and short, which is not generally a natural talent for me. If any additional info would be helpful, I'll be glad to share if I have it, so just ask. :) Thanks in advance!
I know for sure that my grandfather was named Leonard Maynard Sisk, and that he was born 06 Apr 1936 in Coosa County, Alabama. He specified Goodwater, Alabama on the marriage cert/license that he filled out with my grandmother in Hardin County, Kentucky, where he was stationed in Fort Knox and she had been born and raised. On that certificate, he named his mother as "Ora Sisk" and his father as "Stanley Sisk."
Since that time, I've learned that his mother may have never had the Sisk surname. I believe that her maiden name was Ora Cochran. She had Leonard Maynard and an older son, John Olan Cochran, and in the 1940 census, she was shown to live in Talladega County, Alabama, with her husband William Greene, along with Leonard and John listed as stepsons to William, tho John was named as Alan Bowden for some reason.
While married to William Greene, Ora had 2 more children, Evelyn Lanette Green and William Tennyson Green, who are both deceased now. At some point after 1940, Ora left William, and she took her 2 older boys but left the two children she had with William under his care. John Olan Cochran, who is also deceased now, apparently maintained contact with his half-siblings from the way it looks. In addition, he did contact my father at some point even though Leonard Maynard Sisk apparently dropped nearly completely out of his children's lives.
I *believe* that Ora is now buried in Shelvin Rock Cemetery in Talladega County, AL, which simply names her as Ora Cochran, mother of "Olan Cochran."
In the same County, I've found graves for both Mack Cochran and Willie Ridley, who appear to match the census records for the Cochran trail that I've been trying to make in verifying Ora's identity. These two were married in Murray County, Georgia in 1903, and are on the census for the Georgia area until they wind up in graves in Talladega County, Alabama. Another clue that makes me hope I'm on the right path is that Willie's name was apparently "Willie Evelyn Cochran" and Ora later named her daughter "Evelyn Lanette Green." Flimsy assumption but it's all I have.
Ora is a name that shows up on the census with Mack and Willie at least once. However, after that I cannot definitely associate them all and cannot find much info at all on Mack and Willie even when only looking at them and not for Ora.
If anyone has any knowledge or connections to these names, I'd appreciate some help if you're willing to share! Thank you so much, and again, sorry that I'm so wordy. :/

I had found James J. Cochran also. I wasn't aware that he was possibly buried in the Baptist Shed Cemetery, but I have seen the census listing. I have James J. Cochran tentatively attached to the same family as Joseph, John, and Elizabeth. Most of the information on the Linda Brandt tree about John Lafayette and family came from information I shared some time ago. I have gone to Perry County and was able to find the marriage between Sarah Clark and James May; that was where I got confirmation of Joseph Cochran as John Lafayette's father. Sarah was listed as the widow of Joseph Cochran.
I wasn't aware that there was a group of French Canadians who moved to Virginia. I had been looking at the possibility that the father of Joseph, John, Elizabeth, and possibly James might have been among the Acadian refugees who moved to Louisiana, but that was just a theory.
Thanks!

Well did a little research on the Cochrans of Perry County and I don't think my Thomas is part of your John Lafayette Cochran but found several postings of John L. at ancestry.com. The Linda Brandt Family Tree has a lot. Do you subscribe to Ancestry? If not I can summarize the data for you. I also found the marriage record for Elizabeth Cochran and Robert Riley April 21, 1830 in Jefferson County, Missouri. It looks like your crew came from Virginia but I think they could have been part of the Cochran immigrants in Virginia who were French Canadian.

This is interesting. You mention the name Theodosia being the glue to hold strands of the family together - Conley and Marcus also appear often and it may be of relevance that these names appear in the family of McCausland of Drenagh, the landlords of Drummond and other townlands near Limavady.
The McCausland Marcus and Conolly names appear early, Conolly McCAUSLAND being born 21 November 1713 and Marcus McCAUSLAND 7 October 1717 (these from http://www.kelcran.com/Genealogy/sources/mccausland/rmcc.pdf) but Theodosia not until her marriage on 15 Jan 1778 which is after the birth of the first Theodosia in the Cochran family. The name seems to have been relatively popular in the late 19th C.
The above is only an observation and does not prove anything but there was a Marcus Conolly Irwin who originated from Drummond and almost certainly was named after the then landlord.

Yes, I'm still looking for information on John and Elizabeth Cochran. According to a letter written during the Civil War by my husband's g-g-grandfather (John Lafayette Cochran), John and Elizabeth were his aunt and uncle. John Lafayette Cochran's father was Joseph Cochran and his mother was Sarah Ann Clark. John and Joseph had a sister named Elizabeth who married Robert Riley in 1831 in Jefferson County, Missouri. In the same letter written by John Lafayette Cochran that mentions his uncle John Cochran, there is a reference to his cousin Charles Riley; census research shows that this Charles Riley was the son of Robert Riley and Elizabeth Cochran. In 1860 at the outset of the Civil War Charles and Elizabeth Cochran Riley and John and Elizabeth Cochran and families were living in Perry County, Missouri. John Lafayette Cochran's mother lived there as well; his father Joseph died before 1852 and she married James May as her second husband. According to family lore, Jose!
ph Cochran was French-Canadian, but I'm thinking maybe it was his father who was French-Canadian. According to the 1860 Census, John Cochran was born in Missouri and Elizabeth Cochran (the sister) was born in Indiana. I have never been able to find a census record for Joseph, so I don't know where he may have been born.
To summarize my ramblings, John Lafayette Cochran, son of Joseph Cochran, had an uncle John Cochran and an aunt Elizabeth Cochran Riley living in Perry County, MO in 1860. I have found some information about them before 1860, but nothing after 1860. I don't know if they connect to any of the other Cochrans in Perry County or where they came from, other than the reference to Elizabeth Cochran and Robert Riley's marriage in Jefferson County, MO. I would love to know more about the family and would be happy to share the particulars of what I know about these Cochrans.

Cochran(e) families have inhabited the town of Limavady, formerly called Newtownlimavady, since William Cochrane was sworn as a freeman there on September 29, 1669. Typical of many locales in Ireland, a lack of record sources make the task of stitching families together close to impossible, however DNA tests may aid this effort in the future.
For now, we have to do our best to tease out clues from what remains. To that end, I am offering a suggested lineage that sets a few Limavady Cochran(e) lines straight.
Tombstone inscriptions from the Drumachose Church of Ireland (Christchurch) reveal the family group of John Cochrane (died June 12, 1820, no age) with his children, Samuel, 83, d. 1829; Theodosia, 77, d. 1831; and Martha, 84, d. 1847. There is also an Alexander Cochrane who d. 1827, no age or relationship shown. There was a Constable of Limavady appointed in 1780 and he may have been that person. His age would track with the other children of John Cochrane.
The 1831 Irish census shows there was a "Widow" Cochran living in Drummond, Drumachose Parish, with a household consisting of two males, two females and a female servant, all Presbyterians. Six houses away there is a single-person household headed by "Matty" Cochran and I believe that is the Martha Cochran (ca. 1763-1846), having outlived her aged father and (probably) bachelor siblings.
The Drumachose Church of Ireland registers contain the baptism of Mark Cochran, son of John Cochran and Mildred Kennedy on April 5, 1818. Descendants of Mark have located him in Glasgow and later Liverpool where he was last seen on a seaman's register dated 1886. I believe that John, Mark, and Mildred make up three of the four members of the "Widow Cochran's" household in Drummond, in the 1831 census.
To figure out who the widow is we need to make a jump to Memphis, Tennessee, where descendants of Conley Cochran, Sr. and his reported wife, Mary Findlay had stated that this couple were of "Newton Limavady, Ulster Co., Ireland" and had four children, Conley Alexander, Marcus, John and Jane. (see http://www.pacificsites.com/thewillieburgs/The Cochrans.htm )
Of these, Conley Alexander Cochran (1781-1852) married Nancy Ann Cassidy, immigrated to Washington Co., Virginia and later (1844) to Shelby Co., Tennessee where he died. The "Widow" Cochran of the 1831 census was, I believe, Conley Alexander Cochran's mother, the other members being his brother John, sister-in-law Mildred Kennedy, and their son, Mark.
The glue that holds this assumption together is repetition of the somewhat unusual name of Theodosia (ca. 1754-1831) the daughter of John Cochrane, mentioned above, through both branches of the family. It's probably no accident that Conley Alexander Cochran named his daughter Theodocia (1831-1872), the very year the Drumachose Theodosia died. Conley Alexander's daughter, Mary Ann Cochran Melton Slough named her eldest child by her second husband Theodosia Slough, b. ca. 1852 .
Descending through Conley Alexander Cochran's brother, John, we see that Mark Cochrane named his daughter Theadosia when she was born in Glasgow, in 1857.
There's an intriguing possibility about Conley Alexander Cochran(e) who married Nancy Anne Cassidy. All of their known children were born in or near Abingdon, Washington Co., Virginia, the oldest around 1820. In 1836 Thomas Cather, son of a well-to-do son of a Limavady merchant, and his friend, Henry Tyler, decided to take a trip to America. Tom's entertaining journal was published in 1961 by Thomas Yoseloff, New York under the title "Voyage to America; the Journals of Thomas Cather." In addition to this journal, the Public Records Office of Northern Ireland have two letters -- one from Tom to his father, David Cather, in Limavady, dated New York, March 15, 1836. The other is from "H. Tyler" to "My dear mother" in Limavady, dated March 16, 1836.
In the former, Tom writes: "The other day a Gentleman called on us, said he had seen my name announced in the list of arrivals, asked if I was a son of Mr. Cather of N. Lvady [Newtown Limavady] and introduced himself as Mr. Cochran -- he said you would recollect him very well, as he says he had lived with you some 27 years ago, and he is a very respectable looking man & seems to know everyone here. He says he resides in Virginia, but generally passes three or four months each year in New York."
Henry Tyler's letter says: "There is also a Mr. Cochrane who formerly lived with Mr. Cather who has been very attentive to us, acting as our guide through the city and showing all that was to be seen."
Unfortunately these are the only two references (the published travel journal itself makes no mention of this encounter), and "Mr. Cochran(e)" is not linked to a Christian name. Still, it fits the basic outline of Conley's emigration to Virginia.
Listed below is what I hope will aid other researchers with this line.

Looking for anyone researching Samuel Cochran who married Mary Ann
Elizabeth Wright late 1800s.
I have a close DNA match and would like to try and track down the common
ancestor.
I am stuck at my great grandfather Charles Riley Wright, born circa 1860 in
IN or MI. Father was listed as Eli Wright and mother Eliza Kimins.
Any help appreciated.
