My wife's family includes Cochrans that go back at least into the early 19th century in the US. The family verbal history is that they are related to Thomas Cochrane, the 10th Earl of Dundonald.
Does anyone know if this might be possible that he is a direct ancestor? I am fairly certain he did not come to America, did any of his descendants?
Or is this just a case of all Cochrans are related and he is a side branch in my wife's family tree?
Thanks for any help you might give.
Steve

The best way to verify lineage relationships is by having a male direct
descendant take a Y-DNA test and joining one of the surname projects. I am
a member of the Phillips DNA Project and although some in the past claimed
all Phillips are related, it is just not true. Family legends are fun.
Most of us come from very common circumstances, not royalty.

My great great grand mother was full blooded Cherokee Indian Amanda(Mandy) Margaret Smith who married John Nicholson and she has ALOT of children. One of them was Lillian (Nicholson)Peterson and I'm a descendant from there. You can research the Cherokee Indians in the Reference section at the library. there are Dawe's roll that kept track of the indians. And the Smith name came from Red Bird was a Blacksmith so they took Smith off of that. There's a National Archives in Missouri where you can obtain some records you need and it's free for all the copies. Start with the Census Records. My Aunt is sending me some info on the Cherokee's that go back to the 1400s and anxious to get it. The is a Cherokee Museum in Oklahoma.my email is wertacetb(a)yahoo.com I'm also trying to find all the names of Amanda's children. and more

Hi, I might be a bit confused here, since I haven't done this in a while, but are your Cochrans related to Evert Andrew Cochran Sr. born about 1900 (ish) in West Virginia? I've hit a brick wall on him and can't get him figured out. He married Susie Ethel Richmond.

Hi. I am looking for information on my mother's father and so on. My grandpa died when I was 7 so I don't know a whole lot. His name was George Dewey Cochran and according to Ancestry.com his father is listed as George S. Cochran. Could there be a connection?
Thanks,

Hi,
I was doing research today and came across your post. My mom Diane Lee Akerman was from California and her mom was Golda E. Soffett and her dad Edwin Levi Cochran. Back tracking through the records I was able to add a lot of family members today. Would love to share any information on our families.
