I am posting this "new" information in the hopes it can add as an aid for researchers. The info is actually nearly 200 yrs old but for reasons that are easy to speculate (based on its content), it appears this information has been buried, forgotten, hidden, ignored or perhaps difficult for researchers to piece together.
The Samuel Cochran(e) who wed Mary/Marah had a daughter, Jannett "Jane" Cochrane who wed James Davidson [Note: it is interesting that Jannett's sister Elizabeth also wed David Davidson, brother of James]. While researchers of Jannett have had quite a bit of trouble tracking her, I believe this is because many people are not aware she wed a second time to Nicolas Cyre. After the death of both her husbands, Jannett's daughter Polly wrote to help her mother obtain the pension of her first husband. It is from that pension filling and affidavit that we learn much about James, that Jannett re-married, and gather important dates
Pension record: Record number W. 5064 State of Virginia, Campbell County
On the 27th day of March 1844, before me Henry J. ? a Justice of the Peace in and for said county, personally appeared Mrs Jane Cyre, a resident of said county, aged 83 years, who being first duly sworn according to the law doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the act of Congress passed July 4, 1836 and the Act explanatory of said act, passed March 30, 1837:
That she was married to James Davidson a soldier in the Revolutionary War in the year 1779- the same person who performed two terms of service in the militia, after he was married to declarant, from the county of Bedford. The first of which tour of service, he performed under Captain Mathews, and was marched to the South, and was at what was called Gates defeat, and was gone 5 or 6 months from home before he later wed; which was the Spring, and summer of next year after the declarant and said James Davidson was married as aforesaid. The next time that her husband performed was the Spring, and summer after the first tour, at the South again - under Capt Adam Clements - at a place called 96 in one of the Carolinas, and was from home 4 months or more - it being of ? time where he left house and returned about August. She thinks he was gone longer the first time, than the last- she reckons about 9 months in both tours. She further declares that she was married to the said James !
Davidson in February 1779; that her husband, the said James Davidson died on the 22nd day of January 1818 - that she was afterward married to Nicholas Cyre, a US pensioner in May 1819 - and who died in the 17th day of November 1836; and that her maiden name was Cockrane, and that she was a widow on the 4th of July 1836, and still remaining a widow, as will now fully appear by reference to the proof ?
Janes mark
Jannett Cochran and James Davidson had the following children: William, John, Rev. Samuel (m. Frances Oglesby), Nancy (m. Charles Caffery), Polly and possibly Abner though unconfirmed (m. Martha Spicer Grishaw). In 1616, Polly Davidson went to work for Robert Wright- It was about 1616 when Polly became the concubine of Robert "Robin" Wright.
Robert was a prosperous and rich Virginian who had inherited from his father- he was also African America and married at the time (though his wife had deserted him). Robert was born to Thomas Wright (a white male) and Sylivia (a black woman Thomas had purchased from Dr. William Cabell's estate).
It is recorded that Polly's father James and brothers encouraged the relationship, surprisingly making many attempts to aid Wright in divorcing his first wife and pushing Robert to make a will when he was ill; it can be presumed in order to procure said wealth. Most often mentioned in these attempts are William (Polly's brother/Jannett Cochran's son), James (Jannett's Husband/Polly father), and Nancy Davidson and her Caffery Husband. In fact, 2 yrs after Wrights death William insisted that Wright made a will leaving his concubine part of the estate, and swore that his father and Caffery brother in law were witness to it (interestingly Caffery and James had died by the time William brought this out). At any rate... right before Robert Wright died Polly got pregnant, giving birth to the child 7 or 8 months after his passing- the baby died shortly after being born. Still, Polly felt that because she and Robert did have issue, she was rightful heir to the portion in which would !
have gone to their daughter, Martha Anne Davidson Wright. Polly filed suit for inheritance (Davidson vs Wright, Cambell County Va) and Davidsons and Cochrans testified to Robert leaving a will which favored Polly and that this will was destroyed by Roberts sister (who even went to jail for this accusation of destruction). Then Roberts black family members and filed countersuit stating that she was entitled to nothing and they were based on the fact Roberts riches were originally owned/earned by his father (and should therefore go back into the family pot). Next another countersuit was filed by Roberts white family members under the claim that Robert had never legally been emancipated from slavery and therefore illegally inherited his fathers estate, which should have actually gone to them. The case was so out of hand that soon even friends of the deceased Robert started claiming Robert loathed his family and had wanted friends to inherit from him, some family members credit!
ors even started suing and much later other relatives filed suits of e
ntitlement. Accusations were hurled back in fort and the people of Beaver creek were divided; there are notes that even neighborhood husbands and wives testified on opposite sides. Polly's reputation was ripped apart and even her sister Nancy was said to have been kicked out of the church in which she belonged (though this may or may not be the case). To make a long story short, in the end by the time all of this was over, Polly got nothing and pretty much everyone who stood to win was dead- and in the interim, those in charge of the estate had stolen most of the money and illegally sold of the property. [Note: Polly later wed James Turner- I suspect but am not certain, that this is the same James Turner who also had children with Robert Wright's sister Eliza Wright, and who Polly fought against in court]
While there is much more to this story (and I apologize if I have some smaller details wrong), I feel it is incredibly interesting and helpful to those Cochran, Davidson, Caffery, Wright, Turner and Leftwich ancestors who may have hit a brick wall. Being that this is such a colorful and fascinating part of our history, it would be a shame if it were forgotten or left out of the proper genealogies it links up to. Hope it helps someone in their quest! Feel free to email me at antolinmuniz(a)gmail.com
My information was supplied by Robert Grant, a wonderful researcher and Author who spent much time gathering and transcribing the court docs and testimonials in which he supplied to me.

Taken from the Cherokee Advocate, Oklahoma, 20 March 1889
Died - Mr. Charles Cochran died at the residence of Judge John Wolfe on last Saturday evening, of pneumonia, after an illness of only four days. Mr. Cochran was well known throughout this country and had many friends. He was a member of the Methodist Church and was active in Sunday School work in his neighborhood. He was also a class leader in his church. Mr. Cochran called quite a number of his old associates to his bedside and give them a long talk as to how they should live, begging them to give up their sinful ways and live Christian lives. The last words he was heard to speak, just a few moments before he died, were, "Oh! how I love Jesus," and from this time on he was unable to speak. He leaves a wife and four children. He was buried at his home on Grand River last Monday.

A Picture of Campground Number Two and Fay, Rhealda, Myself & Bob(Robert Allan-my brother). Rhealda is the tallest to the left of the photo when facing it. Rhealda I think was a little Jewish and has a resemblance to Barbara Streisand. As you can see I was very small when I met her, even smaller than this picture, since a baby. She had no living children and she is close to Fay's mother, she is about 10 years older than Fay. She is talented too, tap dance or singing. She although does not believe in those occupations since joining the church.

Rhealda Cochran is in (PO Box 244 South Coffeeville, OK, 74072 - with the Church of God as a missionary, She works with a woman named Edith Carter who is a minister with the same church. They have traveled to many places doing their work. Solomon islands, Caymen Islands and many others. I really appreciate the information regarding her mother Nellie. Nellie would be my grandmother's sister, Vera Bays. Also there is Ord Bays, John Bays, Bernice Bays, Arthur Bays and Ruth Bays. There are two more siblings. I don't recall their names, though she talked of her family a lot, Vera moved with her husband Willard Luebker to Kentucky (Fairdealing) to build a camp and cottage resort on Kentucky Lake. Vera's children are Fay Tappan with her first husband, and William Luebker with her second husband Willard. We all lived on the resort together for about 22 years. Fay, William, my brother, father and I. My name is Kathy (Schuster) Hancock.
My grandmother is Rhealda's Aunt and my mother's first cousin. She visits almost every year until Vera passed on, now she visits now and then. We all exchange cards on birthday and Christmas. Rhealda worked in either La Porte or South Bend Indiana at Bell Telephone as a phone operator and she got married ?? miscarried a child, divorced from a man that everyone said was very handsome, but wild. I would like to know his name. I don't think she likes to say his name to anyone.
I am extremely appreciative to find out her siblings, she has always seemed a little like an only child to me. She is 85 years old. BD is December 10, 1984.
Yes, everyone but myself and my brother is from LaPorte, Indiana. It is pretty there. Old homes, trees in town and sidewalks with some subdivisions.
I wasn't sure if my grandmother's father was Cole or Bays (Bass?) You have I am almost certain connected me with a match, Vera died in November of 2000 at 89 years old. Her husband Willard was diabetic, he died in 1984 after years of amputations, up to the knees, and always used crutches and a false leg in the latter years. His father was also amputated from diabetes, to the hip, I would like to know his first name too. Something Luebker with two brothers from LaPorte.

I have a Rehelda Cochran, daughter of Lloyd D. Cochran and Nellie Bays of LaPorte IN. She had a sister June Elizabeth that married a ? Jones. She also had a half brother Arnold Cochran whose mother was Martha Pfeiffer. In 1941 Rehelda was living in LaPorte and June was in Charlotte MI. Nellie's father was George Bays. This is according to Lloyd's obituary in 1926. I would appreciate any further information you can provide on Rehelda, ie, husband, children etc. or any other Cochran's. Lloyd's father was George Cochran, a brother to my gr-gr-grandfather. His father was John Cochran born about 1778 probably in Lancaster Co. PA. The family came to LaPorte about 1846.

I only know one person in my family named Cochran. I am not sure if this is her maiden name or her husbands name. She was married one time, and divorced in about 4 years, she joined Church of God as a missionary. My grandmother was her Aunt. Her (the grandmother) married name is Luebker, saying that is German, her maiden name is Cole, which is Irish while her mother was Dutch.
Since an aunt could be married to an uncle, maybe she is on the Luebker side and maybe she is on the Cole side, Another name on the Cole side is Bass or Bays and I am not sure of the spelling. I think she is an only child, and her mother is Nell, while her name is Rhealda. All of these people lived in Michigan City (Indiana) or Laporte Indiana for several years about 1920 to 1955 or later. Rhealda shares a grandmother Bass with my mother ?? Let me see if I can think that Rhealda must be blood related to the names other than Luebker??
