James W. Cochran was my ggggrandfather. My grandfather, Frank Cochran was born in Clarke County Iowa and moved several times (Michigan & Missouri) before he passed away in Des Moines about ten years ago. Frank was married to Roberta Grimm, who also now passed on about five years ago. I am currently gathering genealogical information for all sides of my family and have quite a bit of information to go through on the Cochran & Grimm side of my family. I would be very interested in any information anyone may have tracing the family line back past James because my information prior to that is, at this point, unreliable. I have several boxes of family documents to ge through yet so more may be uncovered. I'd be happy to share with anyone interested once I get this information sorted.

I've "rescued" an old photograph of Irene JONES, Ada SETTLEMIER JONES, Jesse
Eleanor SETTLEMIER, and Chester JONES which was taken at the Churchley
Studio in Portland, Oregon. The photograph was taken sometime in the early
1900's with the following information noted on the back of the photograph:
Approx ages -
Irene age 12 (1891-1966)
Ada age 38 (1865-1913)
Chester age 7 (1896-1978)
Jesse "Aunt Bessie" age 25 (1878 - 1949)
Based on limited research I was able to gather the following information
regarding this family:
Ada SETTLEMIER was b. 27 Jul 1866 in Woodburn, Oregon to parents Jesse
Holland SETTLEMIER Sr. (b. 5 Feb 1840 in Alton, IL) and Elizabeth Eleanor
COCHRAN (b. 28 Aug 1848 in MO). The couple had 7 children including, Frank
W.; Elsie; Emma; Anna; Jessie; Ada; and Nettie SETTLEMIER all born between
1864 and 1878. Their daughter Jessie Eleanor was b. 25 Mar 1878 in
Woodburn, OR. Jesse HOLLAND SETTLEMIER married 2 additional times, second
wife was Clara GRAY and his third wife was Mary Catherine WOODWARD, he did
not have any children with either wife.
Ada married Benjamin F. JONES on 5 Feb 1889 in Marion County OR and together
they had 3 children, Irene K.; Eleanor; and Chester V. JONES. Their
daughter Irene JONES b. about 1890 in Marion County OR married Albert Avery
DULEY about 1919 in Portland, OR and died 2 Oct 1966. Their son Chester V.
JONES was b. about 1894 in Marion County OR. Chester died in Dec 1977 in
Portland OR.

I'm disappointed that there was no connection in our Rieger (or Reiger) ancestors, but thanks for replying! I'm having alot of fun with this. p.s. my ancestry research takes me heavily into the UK - northern, Durham & Northumberland - my mother was from Stockton-on-Tees, met my father when he was serving in the US Army Air Corps at Kings Cliffe. She came over to the US to marry my dad in 1947. I was born and raised in northern California, but still feel the ties to my cousins in the UK. Thanks again, take care,
Patsy.

Hi Patsy
Paul who married Stella was actually born in Germany in 1878
so the family were still there after 1846 no idea were. All I know is his parents were Paul Reiger and Alvena? who emigrated. I don't have sub anymore to Ancestry world only the UK one.I guess its possible related in someway. I was researching Stella's mothers family her mother was my great grandfathers sister, the children were orphaned, her mother being 11, and we "lost" some of them who turned up in Canada and Stella's mother later in Chicago, all started because I had an old photo from amongst my gt/grandfathers belongings taken in Chicago of Stella's parents and the children

Hi, I saw your message on the board as I was searching for the Rieger family in Cook County IL. Peter and Dorothea Rieger immigrated from Germany in 1846 with 8 children including my husband's great-grandfather Jacob Rieger, and settled in Palatine (now a northwestern suburb of Chicago). I'm wondering if Paul Herman Rieger who married your ancestor Stella Cochran, could have been a descendant of one of Jacob Rieger's brothers who were born in Germany(Henry b.1835, Peter b.1837, Phillip b.1842). I cannot find the family in the US Census 1860 or 1870. Thanks if you can offer help, and good luck with researching your family.

Gordon Cochran my name is Sandy Irvine and I am a great grandson of Ann Eliza Cochran who was Daniel Webster Cochran's older sister. I have been trying to trace the travels of the family from Pennsylvania to Nanaimo, BC. The family begins with Montgomery Cochran marrying Mary Ann Crooks in about 1862 in Latrobe, PA. Three children are born in PA. William L 1863, Ann E 1864, Daniel W 1865. The youngest child Melissa was born in Green Castle, Sulivan County, Missouri on July 5, 1867. Today (Oct 8, 2010) I found the family in the USA 1870 census. Mary A is 32 years old, "Keeping House" and she has 4 children William L 7, Ann E 6, Daniel W 4, and Melissa 2 (born in Missouri). Census was taken on June 24, 1870 in Cuba, Iowa (Monroe Counry). There is no reference in the 1870 census to Montgomery Cochran. Family story is Montgomery disappeared after the family left PA. The next time the family is found is the 1881 census in Nanaimo, BC.
I would be interested in learning more about Daniel Webster Cochran's family. I have a list of 7 children (Melissa, William, Polly, Irene, Clara, Lillian, and Charlotte A). Do you know more about the family arrival in Nanaimo, Do you know anything about John Craven.

If anyone is interested, I have a Great Grandfather, William COCHRAN,
bc1825, who
emigrated from County Antrim, Ireland to Renfrew County, Ontario, Canada
around
1844. He married Margaret Ann Matthews in Renfrew County, in 1848 and
the names
of their children were: Margaret, Elizabeth, Nancy (Mary), William
(Jr.), Ann, Sarah,
John and Jane. I have not yet been able to locate any of William
Cochran's parents or
siblings in Ireland. Any help in this regard would be most
appreciated. Thank you.
