I fing that obit interesting. My 2nd Great Grandfather Cheadle Cochran of
Palmetto, Ga had a son named Berry Winn Cochran who was b 11/15/1828 & d
1/27/1895. He was buried in the family plot in Palmetto, Ga. I would assume
the recently departed AF vet was a descendant of that son.

In 1860 Hiram Cochran, age 15 (so born 1834 or 1835) was living in Sebec in the household of Frederick Morrill, farmer age 31 ME, and wife Diana age 31 ME and children Edwin 6, Emma M. 4, and Malinda 6 months. I can't find him in 1860. In 1870 he's a miner living in Washington, Nevada Co, CA with another Cochran who may be James or Jonathan. Can't find him in 1880. In 1900 Hiram is living in Buckeye, Shasta Co, CA with his brother James. This census gives dates of birth in conflict with previous census records: Hiram born March 1837 and James born April 1829. In other census records they seem to have been born two years earlier, each. Both are single and miners.
Please contact me directly at janet.mackie(a)comcast.net as I have some photos from the mid-1800s, taken in Maine, that may Cochrans. It seems the Cochran family of Maine kept in touch with their Emerson relatives in NH at least through the generation of the children born to Hiram and Mary Emerson Cochran.

Many thanks for the names of their children! Timothy Emerson was Mary's brother. I've been trying to trace this family after they moved north to Maine in the 1830s. This explains why a "Jonathan C.[ochran] Emerson" was living in Timothy Emerson's household at the 1850 census in Orono. I had thought Timothy might have had an earlier marriage...but now I know who Jonathan was.
Hiram and Mary were married on October 8, 1826, and at the 1830 census they had 1 boy <5 and 2 girls <5; compared to the 1840 census where they had 2 boys <5 and 1 boy 10-14; 2 girls 5-9. So, it looks like first a boy, then two girls, then two boys.
There is a Jonathan Cochran buried in the Old Dover Cemetery in Dover-Foxcroft. His dates are 1839-1918 and his wife Josie M. 1850-1926. Also his son Walter J. 1868-? and his wife Lena M. 1863-1927. Is this your family? We are descended from Mary's brother Joshua who did not move north to Maine.
I am so glad that someone finally listed the Cochrans in this book. I
was told that if I wanted to know who was in it I would have to buy it.
I could not afford the books and I always wondered if it was my family.
Thank you for listing some of the patriarchs. I can stop wondering and
I didn't have to shell out another was for a book that didn't include my
family. Whew! Some of know how painful that is! I have a stack of
them.

Hi Janet,
A friend gave me this infomation. It dealt with the
will and probate of Hiram Cochran.
Will - 31 Aug 1844
Probate - Oct 1844
Wife: Mary
Children: James, Mary Jane, Laura (called "Love"),
Hiram, Jonathan.
In 1848 Timothy Emerson was appointed guardian to
Laura, over 14, and to Hiram & Jonathan, under 14.
Inventory includes carpentry material and 6,000
bricks.
I'm trying to find the dates of these children. I'm
quite sure that this Jonathan was my great
grandfather. I'd appreciate any help with that if you
find any!!
My great grandfather's dates are:
born 4 may 1839 in Orono, ME
died 18 sept 1955 in Dover-Foxcroft, ME
Hope this helps you somehow.
Anna
I am looking for anyone who might be related to a William or Thomas Cochran who arrived from Waterford, Ireland on the ship Polly. They arrived in Philadelphia around 1803, I believe.
Howard Cochran
of the above Thomas Cochran line.
