Looking for information on Lucy Cochran (maiden Ashton) born around 1900. Lucy married a Lee Cochran, probably in the neighborhood of Fall River, Mass.. Her parents were William Ashton and Elizabeth Ashton (maiden Ashcroft). Elizabeth Ashcroft and her brother Jim (James) Ashcroft came to the US from England with their mother probably late 19th while they were children... Lucy's sister Ann (born 1902) is my paternal grandmother.
Lucy's father William drowned during her mother's pregnancy and her mother died in childbirth. Lucy and Ann were raised by an Uncle and Aunt Frank and Emily Ward in Boston and alternately by 8 of William Ashton's sister, living in or around Fall River, Mass.. Emily Ward may have been one of the 8.

Larry,
I think we are definitely talking about two different people here. My Zilpha Cochran is listed on the 1850 census in Dale County, Alabama. Based on her listed age of 34, her birthdate would be approximately 1816. The children listed in the household with her are:
Thomas (M), age 11, b. Georgia
Joseph (M), age 6, b. Georgia
Katherine (F), age 5, b. Georgia
James A (M), age 9 mo, b. Georgia.
I think I may have located Thomas on the 1860 Census in Coffee County, Alabama, listed at Thomas H. Cocrand, residing in the household of Hezekiah Goolsby (?), I haven't located any of the other family members yet.
Thanks for posting -- responses like yours help to eliminate dead ends!

My great-great-grandmother was Zilpha Marena Mills Cochran. She died in 1901 and is buried at Four-Mile Baptist Church in Pickens Co., GA. She and her husband, DAvid R. Cochran had 5 children. Alfred Greenberry Cochran, William Pickney Cochran, James Jefferson Cochran, Sarah Jane Cochran and Mary Arminda Cochran. I don't think this one is the one you are looking for;however, there was another Zilpha cochran out there.

I have been scouring the Alabama and Georgia census records from 1860 forward looking for occurrences of Joe/Joseph M Cochran, b. abt 1850 in Georgia, m. Alabama Mooney 13 May 1775 in DeKalb Co, AL, m. Susanna Copeland 3 Jan 1890 in DeKalb Co, AL, d. 20 Nov 1940 in Etowah Co, AL.
On the 1850 census, I have located Zilpha Cochran (F), age 34 (or 54, hard to read), b. South Carolina, with four children ages 9 mo to 11 years; Joseph is 6 years old, born in Georgia. This would put his birthyear at approximately 1943/44, which would be somewhat consistent with his age of 93 years at his death. Zilpha resided in the Southern Division of Dale Co, Alabama on the census.
Would love to hear from anyone having a Zilpha Cochran in their line -- I'm trying to determine if this Zilpha Cochran is my Joseph's mother.
Thanks for any assistance you can provide.
Looking for Cochran child listed on family Bible page, born Febuary 17, 1795. See the Bible page here:

Earl Roy and Mabel's parents were John C. Cochran and Cora England of Benton County, Indiana. I think the family moved to Michigan in late 1890's after Mabel was born in 1895.
Earl had at least two children Archie and Agnes both born in Michigan. Their mother must have died shortly after Agnes was born because Earl in 1920 he is a widower and living with his sister Mabel DeGeer, whose husband is Louis DeGeer, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. Agnes is 2 and Archie is 4.
The 1930 census finds Earl living in Flint City, Michigan with wife Carry M. (Pearsall). Archie and Agnes are 10 years older.
Earl died 9/23/1940 in Templeton, MI. Archie died 1986 in Palm Beach, Florida.

OK, I just got back from the library and I'm confused.....
I got an e-mail with a printout of an electronic search of the Dawes Rolls that included Joseph Cochran, age 2, sex M, blood 7/8. The Hamilton County Bicentennial Library has the enrollment cards on microfilm, and I pulled the card for George W. Cochran and family.
The date of application for enrollment was October 24, 1900. The age on the Dawes Roll was calculated as of September 1, 1902. The actual roll on file at the library reflects that Joseph is 4 years old, which makes sense since the date used to calculated the age on the final roll is 9/1/1902, two years after application was made.
Does anyone else see the conundrum?
If Joseph Cochran's birthdate is approximately 1853 (from census records), and he married Susanna Copeland, his second wife, on 30 Jan 1890, how can he be 2 years old on Ocober 24, 1900?
I think we may be talking about two different Joseph Cochrans. Related perhaps, but definitely two different people.
I'll be happy to e-mail a scanned image of the microfilm print I have if you're interested; just e-mail me and let me know where to send it.
