I have been looking for the family of George Cochran, who was in Berkeley Co., West Virginia in 1807 and in 1830 appears in the census for Jackson, Pickaway Co., Ohio. He was described as a "native of the Old Dominion and of German descent" In looking for this family I found:
Ohio, HARRISON, (town of Cadiz) Roll 93 Book 1, Page 12 -- There is a George Cochran on this census.
In an effort to identify this family and see if it is *my* George Cochran I have come across some information (on the Harrison Co., Ohio Board) which I will sumarize here:
"most of these families were of German heritage and worshipped together at the Evangelical Lutheran Church Middletown, Frederick Co., MD. All appear to move to the same locations - sharing property borders from County to County. All families are found in same years."
In 1800, emigrants, principally from Western Pennslyvania, began to cross the Ohio river ; and in the course of five or six years there had settled within the county the following-named persons, with their families. & The records at the land office in Steubenville show that the office was open in 1800 and that the following entries were made for the first five years on land situated in what is now known as Harrison County, Ohio. Robert COCHRAN came before 1805, from Allegheny County, Pa..
THE CADIZ CENTINEL - Friday June 19, 1835. (The County Treasurer Expenditures paid by cash ) William COCHRAN, viewing damages on Carrollton road - $1.00
THE CADIZ REPUBLICAN - Wednesday, August 20, 1862
(Fund for Civil War Soldiers - Contribution List) $49. -- R. R. COCHRAN.
Can anyone identify the George Cochran in the 1820 census and share how he is related to the other Cochrans in Harrison Co., Ohio? Is this *my* George or does he *belong* to someone else?
Any and all help appreciated.

Did William and John have any other siblings? I am researching a John Cockran/Cochran (all spelling variants on record) who was born in Ireland in 1810, and immigrated to North America c. 1816 (I'm not sure if the family came to the U.S. or Canada first). He had two Cochran women listed seperately from his kids in the census, Letitia (age 19, born in New Brunswick, sister?) and Mary (age 60, born in Ireland, widowed mother?), living with his family in Calais, Maine in 1850. A William Cochran and family were living in Calais then, too (born in NB, c. 1821). I've wondered if John and William might be brothers or cousins.
John's wife, Eliza Ann Bassett (daughter of David Bassett and Hannah Stockman) was born in St. George, NB. John and Eliza's first two children were born in NB, so I think they must have met up there (perhaps when John came back to visit his parents after moving to Calais, Maine?) and spent the first years of their marriage there. The rest of their children were born in Calais. Eventually, the family moved west, first to Wisconsin, then to Minnesota--where John and Eliza Ann both died.
If any of my info connects with yours, please contact me on or off the list so we can share more. Thanks.

I am trying to figure out the ancestry and migration movements of Johh Cockran/Cochran, born in Northern Ireland in 1810 to father: [first name??] Cockran (don't have birth or death date, but I believe he died before 1850)
and mother: Mary [maiden name??] (born abt 1790; don't have a death date, but must be after 1850, when she was living in Calais, Maine with John's family).
He may have had a brother William (b. abt. 1821 in New Brunswick, living in Calais, Maine c. 1850-1880) and sister Letitia (b. abt. 1831 in New Brunswick, living in Calais c. 1850 with John's family).
His family immigrated to North America c. 1816; I do not know if they came first to Canada or the U.S, but I suspect they settled in NB first, with John moving south to Calais, Maine later. John and William both worked as laborers and lumbermen in Maine (according to the census entries).
John's wife, Eliza Ann Bassett (daughter of David Bassett and Hannah Stockman), was born in St. George. My hunch is that John and Eliza Ann met there, perhaps while John was visiting his parents back in NB after moving to Calais. Their first two children, William (b. abt 1836) and Harriet (b. abt 1838, married John Woodman in Maine), were born in New Brunswick, so they must have settled there for at least the first few years of their marriage (I do not have an exact marriage date).
The rest of John and Eliza Ann's children were born in Calais, Maine: John Stillman (b. c. 1840, died young), Mary Ann, Maria Gertrude (married James Lewis Bridge in Oshkosh), Angenetta E. (married William M. Place in Omro, WI), James Albertus, and John Emory Cockran Jr. Eventually, most of the family moved west--first to Wisconsin in the early 1860s, then to Maxwell, Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota. John and Eliza Ann both died and were buried there.
If this family looks at all familiar, please contact me. I've been having a hard time figuring out this branch of the family tree, so if anyone has useful info to share re: John's parents, siblings, and background I would be most grateful.

Dona, if you are still on this board, I would like to exchange info with you. I am looking for ancestors of a John Cochran, and I was struck that you mentioned Cochrans with the middle name of Stillman in your message. My John Cochran named one of his sons John Stillman. He also lived in Washington County (in Calais). I wonder if my Cochrans are related to yours?
This is what I know: John Cochran/Cockran was born in Ireland c. 1810. He immigrated to North America in 1816. By 1836, he had met and married Eliza Ann Bassett (daughter of David Bassett and Hannah Stockman) in Calais, Maine; the couple later moved to New Brunswick, Canada (where Eliza's family lived; they originally moved to St. George, NB around 1812, from Maine). By 1840 John and Eliza had moved back to Calais; after moving to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, they settled in Maxwell, Lac Qui Parle, Minnesota. John was listed as a farmer in Maxwell in the 1900 federal census (at age 90)--he was living with his son James Albertus. Apparently, his son John Jr. was also living in Maxwell.
John and Eliza Ann had several children: William, Harriet (married John Woodman in Maine), John Stillman (died young), Mary Ann, Maria Gertrude (married James Lewis Bridge in Oshkosh), Angenetta E. (married William M. Place in Omro, WI), James Albertus, and John Emory Cockran Jr. (all of whom were born in Maine).
Please reply on or off the list if you want to exchange info. Thanks very much.

I am researching Cochrans in Maine (Calais), Minnesota (Lac Qui Parle county), and Wisconsin (Oshkosh area). I'm tracking ancestors and descendants of John Cochran/Cockran (born in Ireland around 1800), who married Eliza Ann Bassett (born in New Brunswick in 1810s) in Calais, Maine. They later moved to Wisconsin (though at least one of their married children, Harriet Woodman, stayed behind in Maine) and finally settled in Dawson, Minnesota. They had a large family, and there are many descendants. If you would like to exchange information to see if we are looking for the same family, please post or reply off-list to bridgejr(a)yahoo.com.

I am reading the Salina News Herald microfilm looking for obits or information for anyone that might be buried at the Wickliffe cemetery in Mayes Co. Ok. Came across a "Mrs. Cochran "who was buried at the cemetery at Wickliffe school house. She died the week of June 1914-It was in the June 12, 1914 edition. Didn't say much more than that. No Cochran surname came up when I ran the 1910 census at ancestry, but notice a Charlotte Cochran land allotment in the Wickliffe area. Would you happen to know anyone through your research that might be this "Mrs. Cochran"? We are trying to update the cemetery records for Wickliffe. Thank you.

I am searching for info about David and John KENNEDY who lived In Blandford,
which adjoined Murrayfield, in the mid-1700's. We are trying to connect them
to Thomas KENNEDY who is listed in the 1790 census for Blandford. He was an
original settler and drew a lot for a 100-acre share in the town of Murrayfield.
Thomas Married Jane or Jannet GILMORE in Bridgewater, Massachusetts. Any info
about the Kennedys and Gilmores would be helpful. John and David GILMORE had a
sister Margaret who married John COCHRAN.
