I am looking for a James Cochran who was born in Ohio - date and specific location unknown. He married a Margaret Naylor who was b. in Cincinnati on 8-3-1831 so I suppose James was b. before 1831 but not too far before that????
Their first child, Mary Josephine was born in Ohio as well on May 18, 1849 so they were around the Ohio area for quite a while. All subsequent children were born in Indiana. They were Amanda H., J. Will, Elizabeth, and Louisa.
If anyone knows anything or has any advice, please let me know. Thanks, Briana

Hi Debby back again with a possible clue for you to look into.
while checking the cochran dawes rolls family cards .
I found a baby girl named dolly.
well my thinking is that if there is one there may be more . I would check to see if price has a sister or a neice named dolly also.
here is the family card . jack and ella seem to be his parents and I don't know who rogers are but probably his wife's parents or his mom's side. but you may want to get this card to see what lines it is . it should give more info on these cochrans.
hope that helps , ps this Dollie looks like she is a twin twins run in the family..

well I will try to answer where he was born question . I don't know where john was born . I haven't actually found him on a census I suspect that he was born in the creek nation east. I donn't know exactly where that was back then. and that John came to his grandma's when her relations died in the creek nation. but that is just what I suspect. or he was born there on the coosa river at the farm that lilly and shoeboots lived at which I think was on the coosa river near rome GA. or she lived near him anyway.
the only help I can give you is just the little bit I know, which aint much really .
first with natives that move around alot you will want to study their neighbors very well. and ask your selves questions like , who are they moving with? and who are they marrying? and who airn't they marrying? the ones that they move with but don't marry are their closest relations.
also in colbert co AL in late 1860's , besides these guys I don't know of any other shoeboots in that area in 1870's most are in IN and OH and it loooks like IL maybe but mostlyt AR. but some must have gone south , I just don't know which lines went south. and which these eliza and susans came from. but these two shoeboots probably granddaughters I think one married a Felton and one married a alexander Vinson/ ( ?)vincent ( ?) so there was shoeboots relations in the south just not many of them.
anyway if you find a patern as to who their neigbors are then let me know amybe I can help with other names.
wish I could help more . I only really know anything about my gggg grandpa shoeboots and his dad and mom .

Renee,
Here is what I have, which isn't much I'm afraid.
This is my husband's family, mine only by marriage, but they belong to my children too. I started my genealogical quest as much for them as myself.
My husbands parents were George Colfax Durham and Edna Mae Smart. George was born in 1920, Benton, IL. Edna Mae was born 1922 in OK.
Edna Mae's parents were Joseph Smart and Clara Adeline Gibbs. Joseph was born in 1891 (may be 1892 or 93) in Arkansas. Clara was born 1897 in Arkansas.
Joseph's parents were George W. Smart and Blanche/Dolly Cochran.
George was born 1865 in Mississippi. Blanche/Dolly was born 1872 in Alabama.
G. W. Smart married Dolly Cockron (sic) 11 Nov 1888 in Conway Co., AR.
She is always listed as Blanche in the census, but my husbands aunt says her name was Dolly. Blanche may be her given name and Dolly a nickname or middle name, or it could be the other way around. I just don't know.
The story is that Dolly was Cherokee. Whether she was full blood is open to question. My husband's aunt says that she has seen a picture of her and she is definitely Native American.
Per census records, her parents were both born in Georgia. I have, so far, been unable to locate her in the 1880 census as either Dolly or Blanche.
That's it. Not much is it?
I have spent a good deal more time on my side of the family, thus far, and the Smarts have proved somewhat elusive. This week I will start sending off for documents (birth, death, marriage, SS). Hopefully they will give me a better line on Dolly.
Thanks
Debby

Message Board Post:
hi Debby
yes I have a dolly but it isn't the same one mine is many years older than yours .
so well what I have is this .
Attacullculla and Nionee ( Nayonay)
they had
shoeboots and his twin sister ( I am going to call her lilly but I think she is an elizabeth anne /lilly anne or bestey anne and others may call her betsey, I believe my g grandma called her lilly ) indian names Taketeasky and Chahwahyoocah to the creek born abt 1752 ish . mother of sequoyah and Katie pumpkin spencer, charlotte walker and Ned /edward ( ?) and chuwahloooky mother in law of Sixkiller I think . and a few more names I can't quite figure out yet
her ( lilly's) daughter died , her white name unknown , her indian name Kahuga ( probably also an elizabeth ) I will explain why I think that way someday if you wish. it has to do with another set of boy/girl twins in my family and their names on the drennen roll .
Kahuga had a son JOhn Cochran ( he may have heavy creek ties because Chahwahyoocah and shoeboots did also ) shoeboots and or his twin had relations that died in the creek nation and they received slaves from the death , so they both had Creek ties. Kahuga daughter of lilly died before my grandma was born in 1809. the slaves were inherited before my ggg grandma was born I belivee.
John said he was young in 1809 when shoeboots had my ggg grandma named Kahuga, he said she was named after his dead mother, john was picked up by relations and lived with them till older ( by katie walkingstick) . . MY ggg grandma's white name elizabeth jane shoeboots her mother a black slave woman named Dolly . elizaneth jane my ggg grM is on the cherokee removal roll commdities lists before the removal and the drennen in IT oklahoma . my gg grandma lizzy shoeboots, had brothers and sister john 1814, mary polly 1817, and twins william and lewis 1824.
John cochran is a witness for his great uncles son named william shoeboots Vs cherokee nation . john was very old when he witnessed for william . my guess is john was born 1800 to 1806 probably closer to 1804/ 1805 .
I am looking for this JOhn's family they are my family and I wish to tell them what I know of their gg.... grandma. his sons apears to be George on the dawes rolls and George lists Ollie and betsey and john as his Parents. the Geoge I am pretty sure is john 's son is one of the oldest cochrans on the dawes rolls he is like 65 or so . I hope to get his card and miller rolls soon so that I can see what he is calling his grandma. if he is actually naming her and which one the ollie or the betsey is his grandma or mom or wife . john may have named George after his great uncle George guess/gist , sequoyah . other cochran names like walker cochran and watt cochran and sanders cochran and sequoyah cochran may actually be clues as to john's family. some are known attaculculla relations the others I know they are relations somehow I just don't remember exactly how they are related. . but records are clear John is shoeboot!
s Nephew and Shoeboots is Turtle at home AKa white owls son ( and a whole bunch more names). so I ask again are yu from john cochran's family?

Hi Cyndi,
I don't, at the moment, see any connection to my own Cochran (Dolly) who was also of Cherokee descent.
Here is what I could find for you.
I believe Amos is probably Amos Edward Eaton (it might be Edward Amos) born in Nov 1889 in Arkansas to Edward Amos Eaton and Harriet Johnson.
In 1900 Edward and Harriet are in the same township as Lewis and Betsey Cochran. Son Amos is listed in this census as Edward A. Eaton.
In 1910 Edward is deceased and Harriet is listed in Lees Creek, Adair, OK. This time her son is listed as Amos E. Eaton.
Lewis (Louis) Cochran and family also lived in Lees Creek in 1910.
In 1920 Louis Eaton is listed as Louis Cochran living with Louis and Betsey in Lees Creek.
If Amos and Annie were ever married it was probably in Adair Co., but they may not have been.
It is possible that Annie died while giving birth to Louis. She may also have married after his birth and left him to his grandparents to raise.
Parents of Amos Edward Eaton = Edward Amos Eaton and Harriet Johnson.
Parents of Edward Amos Eaton = Alfred R. Eaton and Priscilla Funkhouser
Parents of Harriet Johnson = Riley Valentine Johnson and Cynthia Ann Cates
Sorry that I couldn't find more, but I hope it helps.

I have a Dolly Cochran who was Cherokee. She may also have gone by the name Blanche, I'm not sure. She married a Smart in Arkansas.
Where are your Cherokee Cochrans fron, and what is the time frame? That is where was John born and when?
I have drawn a complete blank where Dolly is concerned. I am not even sure if she was full bloooded Cherokee or if only her mother was Cherokee and her father white.
Do you have any Dollys or Blanches in your Cochran family?

Thanks so much for the scanned images, oddly enough there is some similarity to a couple of the photos (mainly the eyes) and my father's childhood photos! I appreciate your taking the time to send me such a wonderful collection of family pics and with any luck I will possibly track down the connection(s) if any exist!

I believe john is grandson of shoeboots twin sister . I think some call her betsey walker we called her Lilly or lia or something simular . she is CHahwahyoocah and taketeasky .
he seems to call her betsey cochran on george's family card and he has a ollie is this his grandma it would have to be his mom or his great grandma ?
. either way I think it is all the same thing. he said he went to live with Katie walkingstick and I think that is Katie pumpkin spencer . anyway I can't find any stories that have been passed down to confirm his really family or thier white names anyway . and to consider how much everyone relied on John for his memory it seems that what he remebered went the way of the rest of the families memories, as in no where fast..
anyway is there any stories of being related to Chief's of the cherokee or anything like that ? any kinda story will help me really! just peices would help . thanks

OK, all you Joe Cochran Descendants that have been banging your head on the wall looking for the elusive link to tie things together --- here is what we have uncovered this past week. On Sunday I received an email from a Joseph Cochran descendant and we now know that his grandmother, Texas Mary Ann Cochran is my Great grandfather Arthur Cochran's sister. The other children born to Joseph Cochran and his first wife, Alabama Mooney are listed below.
Joseph Cochran mar Alabama Mooney May 13, 1875. They had the following children.
Arthur Cochran (b. Jan 8, 1876, Ft. Payne, DeKalb Cnty, AL; d. 16 Jun 1902, Ft. Payne, DeKalb Cnty, AL)
Alice (Alace) Cochran (b. 1878, Ft Payne, DeKalb Cnty, AL)
W. Louisanna Cochran (b.Nov 1880, Ft Payne, DeKalb Cnty, AL)
Texas Mary Ann Cochran (b. Feb 29, 1886; d. Feb 28, 1940, Gadsden, Etowah Cnty, AL, buried in Clayton Cemetery, Gadsden)
Ella M Cochran (b. 1889, AL)
Alabama Mooney died sometime in 1889. Joseph then married Susanna Copeland Jan 30, 1890. Children born to Joseph & Susanna were:
Mary W Cochran (b. Apr 1892, Ala)
Em E Cochran (b. Dec 1890, Ala)
Nora Ida Cochran (b. Nov 1893, Ala)
Vina E Cochran (b. Aug 1895, Ala)
Margaret Cochran (b. Nov 1899, Ala)
AW (Dub) Cochran (b. 1901, Alabama City, Etowah County, Alabama)
Infant Cochran (b & d 1890-1900)
Susanna died abt 1904, and I believe Joseph remarried again. I have a 1910 census image with him and 3 or 4 of the kids listed above, but it is hard to read.
I have most of Joseph Cochran's descendants through his son, Arthur to the present. My new cousin has most of it through Texas Mary Ann Cochran to the present. If anybody would like to share, please email privately.
Now we have to find Joseph Cochran's parents and back. I have Alabama Moody's line back pretty far.
