Hi Bettye,
REad your query on the Cochran newsletter. I am going
to send this direct to you and also to the Cochran
Newsletter in hopes we will find an answer to both of
our relatives.
I am in the process of selling practically every thing
so I can move, so most of my records are packed away.
If this sounds familiar to anyone, please notify me
directly: bstainback(a)yahoo.com
I have more information, some documentation. Where it
says ca (about) most of those dates were from census
records.
My Permelia is Nancy Permelia "Nan" Cochran born 1856
and married Jake Bogard. She was the daughter of
George Washington Cochran b. 1827/28 in Ala. and
married ca 1853 to Sarah Jane Hudson b. ca 1830 in
Tenn. and died in 1869. They all buried in Lonoke
county, Arkansas. Lonoke co. was once Pulaski Co.
then Prairie Co. then Lonoke Co. They lived there
while all the county names were changed.
If I am not mistaken My Permelia was born in Prairie
County, Ark. (now Lonoke Co.) She is one of the
siblings to my great grandmother, Louise Palmer
Cochran b. Aug. 11, 1865 in Bethlehem, Prairie Co.,
Ark. died May 7, 1936 in Carlisle, Lonoke Co., Ark.
She married William Preston Garner.
George Washington Cochran's parents was John Cochran
and Margaret ?? John b. 1800 in Tenn. a;nd died Mar.
31, 1867 in Lonoke, Ark. Margaret b. ca 1830 in Tenn.
and d. 1869 and they and their family came to Ark.,
Ark. Territory and Okla. with the TRAIL OF TEARS. I
understand Margaret, Sarah Jane Hudson Cochran and
their children had Cherokee blood.
Could they be a descendant of some kind. cousins???
Where is your Permelia Jane Cochran from. Got any
dates, places anything???
In Christian Love,
Barbara Jane (Miller) Stainback from Royal, Garland
Co., ARk.

Hello All:
Do any of you one this list happen to know who the "Judge Cothran" was
living in the section of Alabama known to me as Ceder Bluff, AL during the
time frame of about 1880 onwards.
He did work and help out in the Newspaper business as well in that area also
known as Gadsden AL. area of that state.
I have in my hands some old newspaper clippings on this family. I wish to
learn who the man only called
"Judge Cothrun" *********NOTE************ Have seen this surname line
spelled many ways.
Anyway he was only referred to as Judge Cothrun in this old newspaper
clipping.
His Nephew and his family moved down to Miami, FL after the Nephew retired
from the same paper
Called "The Gadsden Times"
Does this ring any bells???
Thanks,
Gail
Hello list,
It seems that each time i find a reference to Henry F. Cochran's wife
her maiden name is listed as "Posey". I have been searching for
documentation of her maiden name and thier date of marriage for several
years. Everytime I ask someone for their documentation they tell me that
someone else gave it to them or that they found it on a website and that
they do not have documentation. I have tried the names that they give me
ahd it's the same ole story. Right now this piece of information is a
brickwall in my research. If anyone on the list has documentation for Henry
F. Cochran's wife's maiden name and their date of marriage or knows of
someone who does please get in contact with me.

The Cochrane Bridge was named for John T, Cochleae. Was the president of one of the
railroads that ran out of Mobile. He was the greatest promoters of Mobile's growth and
development. He organized and served as president of the company that built the bridge and
the caiuseway that links Mobile to Baldwin countiesis company issued bonds to pay for the
construction which were retired from the tolls charged for the bridge. When the bonds were
paid off the title was passed to the State of Alabama. This is sort of interesting as the new
bridge to Gulf Shores opened last week. This bridge was financed in aa similar fashion

Bonnie,
Cochrane Bridge was named for a man by the name of Cochrane. He owned
property in that area. A few years ago I was called from the archives in
Probate Court to assist two men from New South Archaeological, Inc. who
were doing an archaeological study in the bridge area. Just a personal
opinion but I think the study was required because state and federal
funding were involved in the project to remove old Cochran Bridge and
replace it. Therefore the contractors had to comply with Section 106 of
the Federal Code dealing with Preservation of Historic Sites. The land
is known today as Africa Town and there is a large celebration yearly
there of African Heritage. Cudjoe Lewis and a man named Kibbie both were
slaves aboard the last slave ship to come to America calle

slaves aboard the last slave ship to come to America called the
Clothilde, some still call it the Clotie. She took a shell and sank in
that vicinity and Lewis and Kibbie and others who made it to shore lived
there, built homes, etc. The Captain is buried about two miles from
there.
Probate Court has the land records of Cochrane (can't remember the first
name right off) among others.
I miss the old Cochrane Bridge. To many it posed a delay in "time"

I'm probably not up-to-date in the history of the bridge, but I do remember it
was built probably in the 20's or early 30's, as I recall the "Bay Boat" coming
to the Fairhope wharf when I was a child "over the Bay."
I believe there was a man named Shirley Cochran(e), and that the family lived on
Government St. there are several books about Mobile history in libraries here
in birmingham, and perhaps in other locales, or could be ordered on library
loan. Good luck Marian
