Subject: {not a subscriber} Thomas Cochran 1785 PA
Date: Sat, 31 Jul 1999 10:38:57 -0700 (PDT)
Looking for information on a Thomas Cochran b. 1785 in PA m. Susannah Burgh 1813 in Boston, PA. He is thought to be the son of a Johnathan (ca 1740 Scotland?) and Mary Cochran.
Any information on this Thomas Cochran would be appreciated.
Steven A. Braman
ancestry(a)wws.net
We are looking for information or descendants of the above referenced. They
appeared in the 1850 Census for Blackford, Co, IN with the following children
listed:
Samuel, 22
Andrew, 20
Mary, 18
John, 16
David, 15
Caleb, 10
Sarah, 8
Roderick, 6
The census indicated that Thomas (aged 47) was born in VA and Mary (aged 43)
in TN.
We think it possible that we are descended from Samuel, and we need to get in
touch with any descendants of any of the other siblings in order to verify
this information.
Thank you,

Cynthia: I noticed your note to Janette about the Vol 1 & Vol 2 of
Chronicles of the Cochrans as well as the one on early marriages. Is there
any chance of any Cochran's listed in the Conneticutt area, (Meriden, CT) in
the 1800 to 1900 time frame. I am having a real hard time trying to find any
data on my Cochran line that goes back to there.
I am looking for a William Cochran or "Somebody" Cochran who had a son named
Andrew Cochran and who Married a Mary Gliney. Looking for anything on these
people.
Thanks so much for taking a look.

I am searching for information on John and Mary Cochran. I found them in
Liberty Twp. Tioga Co. PA in 1826. John was born about 1779 in PA and Mary
(maiden name may be Hart) was born about 1783-4 in PA also. Their children
were Robert b. 1806, John Jr. b. 1815, Charles b. 1816, Female b. 1817, Sarah
b. 1818, Elizabeth b. 1820, and George b. 1823 all in PA.
John and Mary, sons John Jr (married Sarah Phelps), Charles (married Lucy
Fox) & George (married Elizabeth Lyman) and daughter Sarah (married Henry
Fox) moved to LaPorte Co. IN about 1845-6 with their families. Robert
(married Elizabeth Beuter) and Elizabeth (married Jared Phelps) remained in
Tioga Co.
I'm looking for (1) the birth place of the children (2) where John and Mary
were before Tioga Co. maybe Dauphin Co. (3) the name of the unknown daughter
(4) John's parent's names (5) Mary's parents names (6) Names of other
children born between 1806 and 1815.
Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Counties, Maryland. Thank you!
Hi there! Thank you for kindly sharing the COCHRAN,etc. info from MD. Not
sure if they are connected to
mine or not, but you never know. Ours ended up in the mid 1800's in CALVERT
CO MD. There were
2 brothers JAMES SOMERSETTE COCHRANE,b.ca.1822 and WILLIAM (HENRY?) COCHRANE
(spelled everyway you can imagine!) b. ca. 1825 approx. They married FOWLER
cousins. William married
ELIZA JANE FOWLER,b.ca.1825-1831 approx birth, and JAMES married her cousin
SOPHIA ANN FOWLER, b. ca. 1820's too. (aka AUNT LOU) The brothers were said
to be emigrants of IRE, but I have
found no info to prove or disprove this info. It does say on some census
records that they were born in
MARYLAND. No mention of IRE, but then again, it said they were
illiterate.(1850 census of CALVERT CO MD) Thank you again for sharing. We
will hold on to this valuable info. I started a discussion group called
COCHRANES-OF-CALVERT(a)onelist.com which is geared toward the MARYLAND
COCHRANE &
FOWLER and related families connections.

Hi Cousins:
The last message from Betty was the contributing factor to my joining this
name identification discussion. My wife, the Cochrun (note the spelling) in
the family, had a great granddad who had a friend who called him Mr.
Cowhorn, because he couldn't pronounce Cochrun, (pronounced Co-horn.) We
haven't heard much about the Cochruns. Are we in the running? We have an
ancestor chart that goes back to 1642 in Dundee, Scotland, using the name
Cochran. Do I understand that this may not be feasible because of the name
changes? Cynthia, do the books you mentioned indicate eras or regions
that used a different pronunciation, or of subsequent name changes for any
reason. I lean to your expertise. Please don't be like my teacher, of a
lot of years ago,and tell me I have to read the book first. I know this is
not possible after the migrations started, or after the jails were emptied,
because of the differences in nationalities or ancestry between the talkers
and the record keepers. But before that, I wonder. I could see that it may
give a hint of where your anscetors originally came from. If anyone can
comment, that would be great.

My mother said they used to tease my grandmother and call her cowhorn instead of Cochran.

Have just learned that the historical marker west of West Rupert, VT has
recently been resurrected/restored. It marks some of the property Col.
Cochran was granted by New Hampshire, and which he fought so hard to protect from New York's Governor Tryon.

Hello,
In doing my research at the Library of Michigan, I found the following
which are probably NOT my family <sigh>. As I firmly believe we need
to all help when and where we can in this great genealogy puzzle,
following is ALL the data I accumulated yesterday (NO queries,
please!). IF you have additional data about any of these families,
please DO post it to the list in the spirit of continuing cooperation
& helping each other find our common roots.

At <http://users.aol.com/EvanSlaug/rostc.html> I found the following
COCHRANs who served in the Regimental Roster for the 103rd
Pennsylvania Volunteers Infantry. I'm disappointed that *my* George W.
Cochran isn't the one listed (wrong war, wrong time period), but
perhaps this will help someone else.

COCHRAN, JOHN M., Captain, Company C. Mustered age 22 September 16,
1861 - January 14, 1863. At Battle of Fair
Oaks/Seven Pines, Virginia, although sick and excused from duty, he
rallied a number of men who were absent when the
Regiment went to support the Pickets, and formed them to the left of
Casey's Redoubt. He remained there until he was so
severely wounded that he had to be assisted from the field. He and
other officer called on some and introduced themselves as
Colonel Maxwell and Captain Mackey. The word go back to Colonel
Maxwell and he was court martialed. He had to leave
the Regiment and resigned from the Army.
COCHRAN, THOMAS A., Captain, Company C. Mustered September 6, 1861 -
June 25, 1865. Promotions to 1st

horse, fully caparisoned, recently deserted by its rider, standing
a short distance in front of Fort Magruder. While Cochran stood guard,
Scott captured the horse. This was the first regimental
trophy. Had it not been for this action, the regiment would have been
the first into the fort. Died in Plymouth, North Carolina

Hello All,
Does anyone out there know of families in KY/TN during the 1800's and
earlier using the "Cotheron" spelling. A marriage record is found in Trigg Co., KY 18 Oct 1871 for Amelia J. COTHERON and Thomas H. Spenser(Spencer).
Birth place of Amelia and her parents are shown as Trigg Co., KY. Census records fail to show Amelia, her parents and/or siblings, only Amelia after her marriage.
Any help appreciated.
Hello fellow Cochran researchers.
Does anyone have information regarding Demaris Kathleen Cochran born 1845
perhaps in TN and died 1900 in Marysville, CA who married William Green Murphy
in 1861 in TN?
Thanks
John
Hello Everyone!
I am descended from a James and Margaret Lowrie/Lowery Cochran. I believe
that they came to America about 1777 and first settled in Fredericks
town/burg Penn. from Scotland. They had 6 chilrend John the oldest and born
around 1776/77/78. I am wondering if they would have landed in Penn, and if
so, does anyone know what the port of entry would have been?
Also, am curious since our family records show them as Cochran if they were
from Scotland then to Ireland to America, or Scotland, to America, or Ireland
to America.
If they were Scots in Ireland, anyone know of what towns/areas our ancestors
would have settled in? Does anyone know what port from Ireland, England or
Scotland these folks might have used to leave?
Based on other discussions this week, I am wondering what is the Cochran
family crest and is it different for Cochran verus Cochrane, and what about
the family Tartan?
Below are some various bits and pieces from a Mrs. (Cochran) Poteen in 1953
to my Grandfather, son of Nellie Cochran), about various Cochran information
she found in her research about our Cochrans-James and Margaret. I don't
belive that this relates to my Cochrans but maybe there is a tie in many
years before and will help someone now-
I have some family anecdotal information about a John Cochran 1570 who went
from Paisley Scotland to the North of Ireland who had a son James, whose son
John had a son James, who had a son Robert, also known as "Honest Robert"-who
came to Penn. and had 3 sons himself, James, Stephen and David. I don't know
that they tie in with my Cochrans. This was supposedly from the Stone
Manpress of Columbus OHIO from the book: Chronicles of the Cochrans, by Ida
Cochran Houghtan.
Another family anecdote of a William Cochran who arrived when?? and his
oldest son was born at W. Liberty Penn.
Also, a date of 1754 where a White Oak tree was planted in James Cochran
Inc., and used to divide the township of Londonderry Penn. This same
information gives a James Cochran who married a Ann Rowan Cochran, they had a
son Stephen, who had a son Samuel Cocrahn-born 1-16-1763, died 5-3-1829.
AND there is a town in Ontario called COCHRANE,
Cheers, Pat in Canada <:)

Enough, already! I've heard my name mis-spelled, mis-pronounced,and
mis-described so many times, it ain't even funny! Let's face it, folks, when
the Normans took over, they stirred things up so much, I don't think they
even knew what their own names were after they got through! My own personal
theory on my name was that the King of England decided to send a bunch of
neer-do-wells to the New World by emptying the jails and prisons and loaded
them aboard ship and pointed them this way. A way to keep track of them was
to assign them the names of the town or village where the jail was located.
Most of these folks were illiterate, and could not correctly say their new
names and the record keepers (who probably were not much smarter) wrote the
names as they sounded to them.
How's THAT for a theory? (Yes, there is town in England by the name of
Cockerham). My only problem now is to come up with a theory on the
