Joshua B Cochran family and cousins - let's get together and get to know
each other and share our family histories!
I've never set up anything like this before - so it'll be very casual
and low budget.
Let's get together on Saturday, July 24th starting at 2 p.m. at the
Civic Center in Huntington (on hwy 69). Bring a snack, old pictures,
etc. and be prepared to visit!
I'll have coffee, a cooler of sodas and thought we could pass the hat to
pay for the Center ($40) or if we need to - to get more sodas/drinks.
I missed the deadline for the monthly Huntington paper - so I'm
counting on the cousins to pass the word along!

I have just transcribed the Rev War Pension Application for Samuel
Cochran of Henry & Franklin Co., VA as part of my ongoing attempt
to make sense of my own Cochran/Coughran forebears. (FYI-Samuel married Sarah
Northcutt and moved to Sumner Co., TN in 1818.) I would post it to the list,
but it is rather long and formatting the line breaks from Wordperfect
so that it isn't all ragged in the email form is a bear. So, if you any of you
would like a copy of this interesting document let me know.

My Cochran line spent time in Abbeville County, Ga before moving on to
Campbell County, Ga. I think that they were originally from Scotland and
and settled in Pa when they came to America. I found a George Cochran who was
born in Scotland in 1773 who had a son named George who was born in 1795. For
years before finding the 1773 George my Cochran line ended with the 1795

A theory that I am trying to prove goes like this. The 1773 George who was
born in New Monkland, Scotland and married to Ann Mills came to America with
their son 1795 George and perhaps two other children, Elizabeth(b: 1797) and
James(b: 1803)
and settled in Pa. 1795 George married Mary G.(Gray??) and their first son
George Washington was born in Pa. 1795 George, Mary G. and George Washington
left Pa. for Abbeville County, Ga. They were in Abbeville for about 20 years
and then the families moved to Campbell County, Ga. If anyone has
information to support or disprove this theory, I would appreciate hearin
frfom them.

I have an Edward Hiram Cochran supposedly born in VT 7 Feb 1845, m 22
Sept 1876 to Julie Ann Elizabeth Bennett in LA, d 24 Oct 1928 in Ft
Worth TX.
My grandmother was Pearl Ann Cochran (or Anna Pearl Cochran). Edward is
my gr grandfather.
Any Cochrans from LA or TX areas who tie into this family? Would like to
share info.
Patricia
My great great grandfather Robert Cochrane married Elizabeth Ann Cochran in
1843. We think it occured in Cochranton, PA. Elizabeth Ann was from the
Pittsburgh area. On their trek west Robert died in Fox Lake, WI and
Elizabeth Ann in Gary, South Dakota.
We know nothing more about Elizabeth Ann's family other than the fact her
brother went further west, to Monroe, WA.
Would like to learn more about Elizabeth's family if any know of her family.
Thanks
Jim Cochrane
Hello All,
My family of Cochran's live in the Seattle, Richland and Othello areas.
We are having a family reunion on 26th June in Othello. My 2nd great
Grandmother was Emma Theresa Cochran who married Don Poe Estep. Her
parents were William Cochran (PA) and Mary Meyer (Germany). If this
will help I have more information on this family.

I am a descendant of Francis Cochran and Agnes Curry thru their 5th
child, Benjamin Franklin Cochran born July 4, 1854 in Kanawha Co. West
Virginia. I would really like to find the parents of Agnes Curry.
I have
(1) Cochran Family History and Genealogy 1927-1977 Reunions: Descendants
of Isaac Maywood and Catherine P. McCardell Cochran and
(2) Chronicles of the Cochrans by Ida Cochran Haughton 1915
both now have an everyname index.
I will be glad to check the indexes - I think they are mostly VA, WV,
and OH.

Also, let us not forget the variants COHORN and COHARN that
existed in what is now south-central VA during the mid-1700s. In
many of the court order books, marriage bonds and wills in the
Bedford-Campbell-Charlotte County region one finds these forms
used interchangeably with COCHRAN, COCKRAIN, COUGHRAN,
etc.

I wondered why I kept coming up with different spellings when I first started on the Cochran line.
Have a very nice day.

For anyone interested I have over 34 spellings for COCHRANE/COCHRAN surname!
I am the Genealogist for THE CLAN COCHRANE IN NORTH AMERICA.
Examples: COCHERN, COTHRON,COTHRIN, CAUGHRAN, COCKRAM, COUGHRAN, COCHRAM, COTHRAN.
Some of the spellings were changed in a marriage application/license because of a typo or because the person writing the record spelled it the way it would be spelled in
their language. Also have found a case in NH in early 1700's the spelling was changed
in court from COCHRANE to COTHRON because they were tired of the mispronounciation so said if that was they way they were going to pronounce it that is
the way he was going to spell it!! Also found on one line as recently as 1900 the spelling was changed when a COCHRAN got married and on marriage records was spelled COCHERN.
I know some of these COCHERN's for years asked them if they were related to me but they said no. Well in searching for my COCHRAN's I found that they indeed are!!!

I copied it in case anyone out there is looking for some of these people.

Hi list,
Is there anyone out there that has any information on the Cochran's who
settled in Hamilton Co. OH before 1812? I have little bit of info that
I've found on Cochrans in the area, but I have more questions than info.
A Mary Cochran married Daniel Remley in Hamilton Co. in 1818. She may
not have been a Cochran at all, but may have been married previously to
a Cochran.
Anyone know anything at all?
Linda Boorom
Have the following narrative, written by a brother of my ggg grandfather.
This apparently came from a travel log/diary of Ammon Dixon Cochran, of
Weakley Co TN, at one time a Notary Public. Ammon died 23 Jan 1900, age
72.
A Brief History of the Cochran Family
Written by: Amon D Cochran
Adapted for: Grant Edward Lowrance, A Direct Decendent
The following is a sketch of our ancesters on the Cochran side. My great,
great grandfather's name was Patric Cochran (your sixth great grandfather).
He came from Ireland, went to Baltimore, Maryland and marned a Miss Smith.
They had five children, four boys and one girl. The boys name were James,
George, John, and William. The girl was named Dina. She married a man by the
name of Callaharn. James married and settled on Clark River above Mayfield,
Kentucky. George married and settled in Illinois on the Ohio River at
Metropolis. William was killed by Indians while a young man. John (my
grandfather and your fifth great grandfather) was settled in Williamson
County, Tennessee. His wifes name was Nelly Manese. By this marriage there
were five boys and six girls.
James, the oldest son married and settled near Izzard County, Arkansas.
William married and settled near Mosco, Kentucky. John W (my father and
your fourth great grandfather) married Rebecca Fly, a full blooded Cherokee
Indian, and settled in what is now Weakley County, Tennessee.
Ammon married and settled in Nashville, Tennessee where he died. Manese died
a ·single man. The girls married the following men. Peggy married Daniel
Ireland and settled in Robertson County, Tennessee. Polly married Henry
Mullins and located in Williamson County, Tennessee. Elizabeth married John
Brown and located in Wilson County, Tennessee, Sallie married John Garner
and settled in Lawrence County, Arkansas. After his death she married a man
by the name of Boothe. Nancy married Isaac Manese and lived in Robinson
County, Tennessee. Jane married Bob Wisoner and located in Ozark, Green
County, Missouri.
After the death of our grandmother, Nelly Manese (your fifth great
grandmother) Cochran, our grandfather John Cochran married Susan Ricer
Our grandfather John Cochran served in the Revolutionary War. He was a
rifleman and served under General Morgan. He was killed by a negro named
Jess.
My great grandfather, Patric Cochran. (your sixth great grandfather) was a
very small man and his wife was a very large woman, and all of the children
were large but one.
My father and mother, John Whitset and Rebecca Fly Cochran raised seven
children, three boys and four girls. The boys were Manese, John B. and Ammon
Dixon. The girls were Nelly, who married W.B. Langly; Sarah, who married
Robert Capps; Reaney, who married Will Capps and Margaret, who married James
Chadwick and settled in Seiver County, Arkansas.
John B. settled in Dyer.County, Tennessee near Dyersburg The rest settled in
Weakley County, Tennessee.
Notes supplied by James Edward Cochran III .
Nixa MO Saturday, 29 May, 1999
1- John and Nelly Cochran were my ggggg grandparents
2-The above was written by Ammon Dixon Cochran, to an unknown relative,
(Grant Edward Lowrance) and was copied by me exactly as I recieved it.
3-"Jane married Bob Wisoner and located in Ozark, Green County, Missouri."
This area is now Christian County, as it was formed in 1859 from Greene Co.
They were married 4 Aug 1825 in Williamson Co TN. They moved there before
1840, as this family is on the Greene Co 1840 census.
