Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
Thought I would try this again. We are desperate to obtain any information on
Samuel Cochran born ca. 1824-1827 in IL (possible place of birth is IN). On
15Jan1851, in IN, he married Manerva (Minerva) Palmer, daughter of Mary
Balsley and Samuel Hamilton Palmer. She was born 21Mar1835 and died in
Barada, NE on 25Jul1919.
Samuel was bound out by a lawyer to serve for his son in the Civil War. He
enlisted and deserted, then re-inlisted and deserted again. The last time
Minerva heard from him, he was in Kokomo, IN in the guardhouse and was to be
put into the 14th Battery in Indianapolis. He drew his tucker, but never
reported for duty. He also never returned from the war.
We are trying to find parents and/or siblings for him. We believe that he
may have had, at least, two brothers, Roderick and Caleb, but we have no proof
of this. We also think his mother's name might have been Ann, but there
again, we have no proof. The Census information is inconclusive.
Samuel and Minerva had the following children:
Caleb Calvin, b. 16Dec/1856 in IN, md. Elizabeth Jane Nutter on 31Dec1883 in
Richardson Co., NE and d. 06Sep1918 in St. Joseph, MO
Leander David, b. 21Dec1859 in Evansville, IN, md. Elizabeth Dorothy Prosser
in Craig, MO and Died May, 1935 in Smith Co., KS
Samuel Cochran, Jr., b. 1851 or 1852 (family rumor says he died at 19)
Josephine Cochran, b. 04Mar1853 in Blackford Co., IN. Spouses were Oscar
Boone Roll and Alex Davis, died 28Sep1912 in Blackford Co., IN
Roderick Cochran (no date or place of birth known)
Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? We have been at this brick wall
for over 20 yrs. We have war records and Census information, but none of this
has helped pin down Samuel or his parents and/or siblings.
PLEASE HELP US!!!

Chuck and All,
I'll give you a sight that will do what Chuck needs and MORE!
http://www-nmd.usgs.gov/www/gnis/gnisform.html
The is Geographic Names Information System, United States and
Territories. You can enter a town name in "Feature Name" and add the
state, it will not only give you the county, it will give you a map
showing where it's located in the USA, then another map to zoom in and
out! It will also allow you to search by cemetery name, river name,
etc.
What a wonderful find for us genealogists!

Does anyone know of a websight that will allow me to type in the city
and state and be given the county that it is in? I'd also be interested
in a sight that would provide good maps of states with the counties
plotted out and a good representation of all of the towns therein.

If anyone knows of a Dexter Varnum who is tracing the Cochran families of
Henry County...I am trying to contact him !!
He has a W. J. Varnum who is married to a Sarah Emily Cochran.

Please contact me if you know of him...His email address that he has listed
is incorrect...it is listed as DVarnum(a)aol.com
Please tell him to contact me at sharon(a)planetc.com

William was born in Maine. He first married Mabel (Barney) Marti. And then he
married Mary Dutcher, who was born in Wallingford, Vermont and later lived in
Onondaya, N.Y..
Mary's parents were Seth B. Dutcher and Artemesia Tyler (b.1791)
William and Mary had 3 children that are known one was Willard Cochran
b.6-30-1880 in Octavia, Nebraska. He died 11-20-1944 in Kansas City Missouri.
The other two were Roy Cochran and George Cochran.
Willard worked as a laborer and lived in the Kansas city, missouri area for 19
yrs. His wife's name was Bertha.
Anyone having information of this part of the Cochran family please contact me
at Candy77168(a)aol.com. Thankyou
I downloaded the 4 part file in 10 minute chunks at 28.8K. You can also
browse the Gedcom online. Cynthia

Hi Sharon,
# 1 get use to looking for: Cochreham, Cocherum, Cockerham, Cockrum,
Cothern, Cothren, Cothran.... my cousin that has been doing this since 1961
says she has found about 25 different spellings in Greenville County, SC
census. You can do a Genweb archives search (web link from
www.rootsweb.com) in SC using your favorite spelling and if you get one hit,
read the entire file. Then visit the districts site and read all of their
documents.
The Genweb archives for South Carolina are great -- constantly being
updated. www.usgenweb.org
South Carolina changed county lines and names about six times. (But
Tennessee still gets my vote as the "Most Likely to be the Next County by
Next Week" Award.) Learn the old district names and search them all. There
is documentation on this at the Genweb site.
There is a database available for "Old Pendleton" district -- upstate SC. It
was a migration area for points South and West. Yes there are Cochrans
there! I downloaded the files a few days ago. If you are not into
downloading they also sell a CD and part of the proceeds are donated to
Rootsweb. I'll post that message to the list.
Join the South Carolina Genealogical Society and post queries in their
magazine. A lot of people that have been doing this for a long time never
heard of email.
Happy hunting!
Cynthia

I have the following line:
Ambrose G. COCHRAN (b) 1821 White Co., AR
William A. COCHRAN (b) 1850 White Co., AR
William Caleb COCHRAN (b) 1888 White Co., AR
Any connections?
Alice L. Camp
I am in search of the parents of Daniel Cochran that was born approx. 1785 in
either KY or VA. Because of the boundaries at the time he was born, we have
not been able to determine exactly where he was born. On the census records
for 1850 he shows Virginia but in the history record for Hickman County, TN it
lists him as coming from KY. I have been unable to trace him in either state.
He is my great, great, great, great grandfather. I know that he settled at
Mill Creek in Hickman County, TN in 1818. He purchased his first property
there in 1820. I have most descendants from his line if anyone is interested.
Most of them are located in and around Hickman County, TN.
I know there is someone in Ohio that has contacted an uncle of mine - Allen
Hinson Cochran trying to get the TN line of the Cochran's. Please contact me
if you also subscribe to this list.
Thanks,
Jessica Cochran Hill
