Hi folks,
Got this forward today and thought I'd pass it along. This includes (if
ALL of Family Search is included) Ancestral File, IGI, Scottish Parish
Records, SSDI,
Fam. History Library Catalog (wow) and Korean and Vietnam Death Index.
Hope I haven't forgotten anything. I trust the person who forwarded it
to me, but don't know the previous folks.:)
GUESS WHAT!
This is not a rumor as I got it first hand at the LDS Family History
Library
in SLC, UT, today....and it is out on flyers.
Beginning March 1st, the LDS church has decided to release Family Search
to the internet for a 3 week trial basis at: http://www.familysearch.org
They would like everyone to try it out and respond! Happy day! We
aren't certain exactly how it will be laid out. May only start with a
few of
the programs...but it's a start! I hope it won't get out of hand.

Hi Jim,
Could you send the 1500 document in several different E-mailings since
it's very long. I know we'd all enjoy seeing it.
Thanks,

I have this letter that might be of interest to some. It is lengthy and I
hope worth reading. The letter is on TREZEVAND & COCHRAN letterhead. General
Agents, Southwestern Dept., Dallas, Texas. 1876-1906
October 22, 1906
Mr. B.J. Cochrane
Brandt, South Dakota
Dear Sir:
Mr. F.E. Cochrane has sent me your letter of October 3rd to him, which I have
read with much interest.
You suggest my writing to Ireland, and that I may obtain some information
there by so doing. Can you give me the address of some proper person there to
whom I may write for the purpose of making inquiries regarding any branch of
the family?
Two of my great-grandfathers, Andrew Cochran and James Wasson, married two
sister, Sallie and Margaret Beard, daughters of John Beard and Mollie Carr,
who were Irish people, and my understanding always has been that they came
from the north of Ireland. I remember when I was a boy hearing my grandfather
say that he had relatives living in Dublin, but never really knew anything
about them.
I will appreciate it very much if you will make a careful search for the paper
containing the history of the Cochrane family, which was loaned you by Mr.
F.E. Cochrane, and return it to him so that he can send it to me. I would
like to make a copy of it, and would be sure to return it to Mr. F.E. Cochrane
promptly. If you cannot find it, and can tell me what paper it was, and when
and where published, I will try to get a copy of it that way.
My Grandfather John Cochran, son of Andrew Cochran, was born in 1784, but
whether Andrew Cochran was born in this country or not, I do not know. My
understanding always has been that he was brought to this country by his
parents when a child, and that the Cochran, Wasson, Beard and Carr families
all came over together. I know that he and James Wasson married the Beard
sisters in New York about 1783, or, as an old letter from a relative says,
"during the war," and after the war they moved to the backwoods of
Pennsylvania, and a few years later over into Kentucky, where my father was
born in 1824.
It is not at all improbable that my great-grandfather, Andrew Cochran, was
related to the ancestors of yourself and F.E. Cochrane. Some time at your
early leisure I will appreciate a letter from you in reply to the questions
asked above, as you may possibly throw some light upon the subject we are
writing upon.
All of the old members of my family have passed away, and there is no one
older than myself from whom I can hope to obtain any information, and of my
own generation I am about the only one that takes much interest in this
subject, which I have been hunting up and writing about for a number of years.
I am now getting along in years myself, being fifty-one years old, but still
feel an interest in trying to learn something about the former generations.
If you can lend any assistance, it will be greatly appreciated.
With good wishes for your health and prosperity and assuring you of a cordial
welcome if you ever come down this way.
Sincerely yours,
Sam P. Cochran
Dear Listers
I have another document that goes back into the 1500's and earlier. It is
quite long but would be glad to type it in if that is okay to do on a list
such as this. Otherwise, I would be glad to copy and send.
Hope someone can relate to this.

Hello,
I have a xeroxed copy of two pages from an unidentified book. Could
someone please identify this book for me? Author? Publishing data?
etc...
I am also interested in trying to establish IF this COCHRAN family is
related to *mine* ....
Following is the material from this "source unknown" book:
(pages 254 & 255 of a book, Source Unknown)
GLOVER
William Glover was the administrator of the estate of Edward Glover,
deceased (probably his father) in Orange County, Virginia, on 28 July
1741. On 3 July 1736, Edward Glover was a witness to four land sales
(deeds) by William Jollife and his wife Mary in Bucks County,
Pennsylvania. (source #171) At Edwards estate sale, William Glover
purchased horses, cows and miscellaneous items including: six calf
skins, 176 pounds of nails; 409 pounds of grey deer skins, nine pounds
of beaver and other fur; 30 pounds of drist leather; a large parcel of
thread and brass, 11 gimbletts (small tools for punching holes), some
knitting needles and mohair; buttons, pins and needles; seven pieces
of tape and remnants; remnants of carsey, sowing silk, silk laces, two
remnants of callico, two pieces of gustin and two pieces plus a
remnant of Douglass. Evidence suggests from these items that both
Edward and William were tailors and furriers, fashioning leather coats
and leather breeches (trousers) . (source #172)
William purchased 215 acres from Thomas Rutherford on 28 April 1742;
this land was located on the east side of the main road from the
Potomac River to Jost Hites land. (source #173) (Tract 56A, Map 7)
The main road is present-day U.S. Highway 522, as it was before the
construction of Interstate Highway 81.
On 6 March 1760, William received a Fairfax grant for 355 acres.
(source #174) surveyed on 4 November 1752, this land (adjacent east of
his 215-acre patent land) ran along U.S. Highway 17/50. He and his
wife Susannah sold the 355 acres to Hugh Lenox, William Scott and John
Mitchell (merchants of Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania County, Virginia)
for 214 pounds, 8 shillings on 7 February 1765. (source #175)
William Glover was deceased by 2 June 1789 when his will (dated 1786)
was proved in Frederick County Court. His will instructed his wife
Susannah to sell the land lying on the north side of the Great Road
leading from Winchester to Falmouth (U.S. Highway 17, southeast to
Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia). He willed the remainder of his
215 acres to his grandson William Coughran (Cochran). Glover also
mentioned grandchildren Agnes, Elizabeth, Mary and Rachel, younger
daughters of William Cochran, Sr. He bequeathed one shilling to
William Cochran, Sr., stating in his will he having had enough given
him already. Glover appointed his wife Susannah and grandson William
Cochran, Jr. as his executors. (source #176) As executors, Susannah
and William sold the nine acres 97 poles on the northeast side of the
road leading from Winchester to Berrys Ferry and to Fredericksburg
(adjacent south of Falmouth), on 3 June 1789. It was sold to
Susannahs grandson Robert Cochran (Williams brother) for 37 pounds.
(source #177) (part of Tract 56A)
A John, Samuel and Robert Glover were in Albemarle County, Virginia
where they sold land in 1747. (source #178)
William Cochran Sr. was deceased by 1 December 1795 when his will
(written 10 January 1795) was.. proved in Frederick County Court. He
listed his second wife Mary (probably not William and Susannah
Glovers daughter) and children James, Robert, William, Ann (wife of
William McKean), Margaret (wife of Isaiah Curlet), Martha (wife of
Benjamin Langley), Agnes, Elizabeth, Mary and Rachell. He appointed
sons James and William Cochran and son-in-law William Curlett as
executors. (source #179)

Looking for parents and/or siblings for Samuel W. Cochran b 1824 or 1827 in IL
or Henry Co., IN. On 15Jan1851 in Blackford Co., IN he married Minerva
Palmer. The confusion about his birth places and dates of birth arise from
conflicting information given when he enlisted during the Civil War. He was a
bounty jumper and was jailed at least once of which we have definite proof.
The last word the family received from him came in a letter he wrote from the
Kokomo, IN guardhouse where he was placed for desertion. Army records have
been received and given no new light on his final plight.
We are also looking for information on Samuel, Jr. One family story says that
he died when he was 19. Another said that he was bound out to work until he
was 21 and that he ran away. He was born in 1851 or 52 in Blackford Co., IN.
One of my uncles remembers seeing an old man in the 1920s that everybody
called Uncle Sam, and he thinks this was Samuel, Jr.
If anyone is interested, we have information on Samuel and Minerva Cochran's
other children, Josephine (Josie), Caleb Calvin and Leander David (my great-
grandfather). I would be glad to share information and pictures with any
interested family members.
Thank you,
Lynn

Hi everyone,
I'm new to the list and this is my first time to request information. I've
been following your exchanges for a few weeks now and have not seen the
Cothran spelling used. Would it be correct to believe this to be still
another spelling for the COCHRAN lines? In any event I am seeking
information on my Cothran ancestor: Amelia Josephine Cothran b. 4 March
1853 in Trigg Co., KY d. 27 May 1921 in Christian County, KY. She was
married to 1. Thomas Huchinson Spencer, 2. Melton J. Armstrong, and 3. ?
Wilson. Does anyone know of this line of Cothran's. I would like to know
who her parents and siblings were. Any info is appreciated as I am stumped!!
Thanks in advance for any help.

Hi everryone. I have just gotten started doing family research and I was
hoping I could find more here. My ggrandfather was William Samson COCHRANE
born in 1872 in Southern Illinois(?). His mother was Addie MURRAY and his
sister was Nelia COCHRANE. He married Bernice BEESON in Lincoln, NE in 1905.
They had 2 children Helen COCHRANE TEAL and William Thomas COCHRANE (my
grandfather). William Samson died in 1928. That is all I know about them. I
do know we are also in some way related to the 10th Earl of Dundonald but I am
leaving that until I get the immediate family squared away.

There is a web site which shows all the variations of COCHRAN including
my CORCORAN family. They all eminate from the original gaelic name. It
is the reason I am on this list. I will try to locate the web site in my

With an "e" or without, Cochran is probably pretty much the same. In some
families, people did vary the spelling of their surname a bit so they could
say "We aren't related to those people over there who spell their name with a
"e", for example. In truth, they were probably first cousins.
Many people in the 1800s and earlier (more so) didn't know how to spell their
names, so you could get anything. In this century, how a person spells his
name and how it appears on official records isn't always the same. A couple
of my uncles spelled their name with an "e" sometimes just to be cute (or
something). It was just a quirk, not official and no feud.
I spent a couple of months in West Virginia in the mid-80s to do research and
noticed that some of my distant cousins (different surname) pronounced COCHRAN
as though it was spelled "COTHRAN" and they said it that way all the time.
There were COTHRANs around there, too, so it made me wonder if they were of
the same family at some point. Maybe I should look there for some of my lost
siblings of earlier ancestors.
