I'm new to the list, and wanted to see if anyone had any information on
my
ancestor, James Cochran:
Name: James Cochran
Birth: ca 1750
Research
The first white settlers known to be in the Eastport area, known then as
Moose
Island, were French. After the French were defeated the area came under
British control and the French settlers abandoned the area. Later, in
1771,
the Massachusetts Bay Colony made official land grants to a number of
people,
James Cochran being first on the list. He and several other families had
already been living on Moose Island on land they staked out themselves,
without any real title to do so. He was given title to Lot #1,
comprising 100
acres, which included Princes Cove. This land was later owned by Capt.
William
Billings.
James was called, A native of Ireland. He lived his life on his
homestead and
died there. There was a local joke at that time that they all remained
there
on Moose Island because they were bewitched by the water from a local
spring.
There is a record of a William Cochran, ca. 1710, married to a Mary
Miller,
who had children:
James
John
Anne, who married William Nichols
Jean, b. 1693, d. 7 Sep 1755, Londonderry, NH, who married James Rogers
Mary
Janet
Hannah
This would make sons James and John the correct age to be the father of
our
James Cochran.
Spouse: Lydia

Hello Bruce,
You have me a little confused with the above lineage.
William Cochran ca1710 and Mary Miller had among the children you
listed: Jean b. 1693??????? Was William her father?
I might can help you with this line. I have in my files a William (born
c1709) and Mary Cochran (b. c1710). I didn't have Mary as a MILLER, but
then I didn't have much on them at all...no children listed. However,
this William Cochran's father was John and Janet (BROWN) COCHRAN. Their
children:
William b. c1709
Jean b. c1710
Katherine b. c1711
Richard b. c1712
Robert b. c1713
John Cochran was b. c1690 to Richard and Janet (SLOAN) COCHRAN.
Richard Cochran b. c1642 was the son of William Cochran b. c1598 County
Donegal, Ireland and Unk. THOMPSON b. Londonderry, Ireland.
William b. c1598 was the son of James Cochran b. c1580 Fernois, Paisley,
Scotland and his wife Janet BURNS. This is where my COCHRAN line
branches from yours (if this IS your line).
James Cochran b. c1580 was the son of John Cochran b. 1550 Fernois,
Paisley, Scotland, who died in Carrikeel, Antrim, Ireland.
His father was John Cochran b. c1520 and his mother Mary LINDSEY.
This John was the son of another John COCHRAN b. c1490, the son of
Robert and Elizabeth (SEMPLE) COCHRAN. His father was reportly Alan
COCHRAN, born 25 Sept 1432 Paisley, Renfrew, Scotland.
Not all of this information has been verified by me, but I'll be glad to
share what I know on these lines.
My own branch came to North America c1717 from Ireland. They landed in
Halifax, Nova Scotia and made their way to Topsham, ME. This was James
Cochran b. c1674 Londonderry, Ireland and his wife Letitia Moore
PATTEN. James died in ME and his widow moved with her children to
Londonderry, NH. I understand that quite a few of these related
COCHRANs remained in Maine, but I do not have much on them. Letitia
Moore PATTEN's brothers remained in Maine and have many descendants from
that state.
Let me know if you think there is a connection,

Thanks for the email regarding your Cochran family. However, as I believe is
stated in the policy of this list, please do not forward unsolicited files. I
know that many services offer the option of blocking incoming files - however,
I must keep my email address available for files for business purposes.
My name is Jason Cole Cochran and I am the GGGGgrandson of Richard Cochran
and Martha Walley. I do not know who Richard's parents are, but I know he
was born in 1823 probably in Alabama. He and Martha were married in 1843 in
Green county Mississippi. I believe that both Richard and
Martha's families migrated from the Carolinas. If you have any info on these
two
I would appreciate it. I will send you all the info that I have.
Thank you.
John Pinckney Cochran b.Dec 21,1821 married Margaret (Peggy) McCay.I think
I saw this on the list just recently. If someone is looking for this
Cochran,I have him in some of my Cochran's name.
Hello Everybody:
Here is what I think.
Emmit Cochran wrote a book. In one section of this book called
COCKERHAM/DUNLAP
He lists my 5th GreatGrand Father Hezikiah and his 3ed wife Sarah.
Who did have a son named John. But John was the son of Hezikiah
and Elizabeth and not Hezikiah and Sarah. Sarah had no children.
Hezikiah and his second wife had no children either.
Elizabeth was the mother of all of the children of Hezikiah Cockerham. He
later spelled his name Cochran, Cockrum etc.
I believe that Hezikiah and Elizabeth are the ones that this chapter
refers too!
I have in my posession copies of the Family Bible pages.
This bible starts out with Hezikiah and Elizabeth.
Every other entry for women who married Cockerham or Cochran
men have listed their maiden names.
Elizabeth is called Elizabeth only with no maiden name given.
I believe that:
Hezikiah Dunlap b. 2/19/1762 married Elizabeth Cockerham who refused to
change her maiden name so Hezikiah changed his!
I believe this occured in Lunenburg County VA. prior to 1786 as
this was the birth year of their first son named William Cochran
b. 1/24/1786. Later on in one of the US censuses a son of William named
George gives his Fathers place of birth as MD.
Was this a mistake? What were Hezikiah and Elizabeth doing in
MD? Could this be where he had to go to change his name?
I also have in my posession my own GrandFathers Death Cert.
That names The above George as his Father and his mother is listed as
Harriet McColman. They are also shown in the bible pages and are listed
under marriages.
My Grandfather is name at birth:
Ovid Dunlap Cothran
Where else did the strange middle name Dunlap come from?
No where else in my family line does this Dunlap name ever show up. I
think that George knew the story of the Cockerham/Dunlap
marriage, and in an effort to pass on the Dunlap name as well used this for
his own sons' middle name.
So does this make Elizabeth the daughter of John of Lunenburg Co. VA? I
believe it does. And then we find on an 1830 US census in the same area of
SC being Greenville Dist. a man named William Cochrum listed as age 90-100
years old.
Could this man not be the Father of John of Lunenburg and Grandfather of
Elizabeth Cockerham?
Did Hezikiah moved to this area to be near family with all of his children
after the death of Elizabeth? But somewhere along the way he had already
married wife #2.
I also have in my posession both wills of Hezikiah Cochrum.
In his wills he lists Sarah, wife #3.
Any one out there have any thoughts on any of this?
Would sure love to hear from you, could use all the input I can get.
Thanks in advance,
Gail
