I think we have a match. My third great grandfather was Samuel Cochran. His
father was Preston Cochran and his mother was Susanna Pemberton. I have that
Preston had a second wife Elizabeth Edwards and your Clement was their son.
Does that sound reasonable.?

Hi,
About a year and a half ago, I sent out queries to different Cochrans online,
and this is one that I got in response. He may not be able to help you, as he
never took this email past the Robert you ask of, but it is the same family.
Good Luck.

I'm new to the list. Fannie Mae Cochran was my ggrandmother. This is the
information that I have:
Fannie Mae Cochran (1880-1968) married to Jason Lawhorn (?-about 1926) from
Casey County KY.
Fanny Cochran daughter of William Braudus Cochran (1862-?) and Betty Kemp.
William Braudus Cochran the son of Clement Kendrick Hickman Cochran
(1837-1904) and Margaret Vanoy.
Clement Kendrick Hickman Cochran the son of Preston K. Cochran and Susannah
Pemberton.
Then I found a Pemberton researcher who had the following information:
Preston K. Cockran the son of Edward Cockran and Mary Edwards.
Edward Cockran the son of Nathan Cockran.
Nathan Cockran the son of John Cockran and Lily Kilgore.
Sorry, but I don't have many dates. I do have more information on siblings
of some of these though. Any information about any of this would be
appreciated. The Pemberton researcher spells the name Cockran all the way
down to Fannie. My mother say that her grandmother spelled her name Cochran.
Thanks, Chris

A. COCHRAN is a native of Jefferson County, Ind., and is the third of the
eleven children born to Andrew and Elizabeth (Woods) Cochran. He was married
in Madison, Ind., in 1849, to Miss Minerva G. Morris, a native of Indiana,
and daughter of William Morris. After a three years' residence in Madison,
Mr. Cochran moved to New Albany, and in 1854 came to Brookston, where, in
1870, he established his present business of undertaking, dealing in furniture
and house building. He has four business rooms in a row, owns four lots and
part of two others, and has another house and lot in the east part of town,
and also owns one farm of eighty acres and one of twenty. He has served as
Town Trustee six or seven years, and as School Trustee two or three years.
Mrs. Cochran died in 1857, and his second wife was a Miss Michelle French,
who died November 30, 1882,. Mr. Cochran has three children living, William
A. by his first wife, and Sherman and C. C. by his second. Mr. Cochran
has been a very successful business man, and stands well in his community and
in the Odd Fellows' order.

With regard to Cheadle cochran referred to in part 1 of Sharon Minton Hill's
e-mails, I may be able to shed some light on these people. My ggg
Grandfather was Cheadle Cochran who was born bet 1786 & 1790 in Franklin Co,
Va. He was the son of John Cochran and Susannah Lumsden, and the grandson of
Samuel Cocran and Mariah (Cheadle)? . Both Samuel & John were rev war
soldiers, who migrated from Va to Oglethorpe Co., Ga. Samuel moved in 1791
and died there shortly after he signed a will on 10/27/1791.
Cheadle was a state senator from DeKalb, Henry and Campbell Counties,
but never moved from his home near Palmetto, now Fulton Co. The counties
kept splitting into smaller units. That is why GA has 159 counties now.
Samuel had a son Cheadle. John's son is listed above. Cheadle's son
Martin had a son also named Cheadle. The son of Samuel is apparently the one
who signed the petition to divide Henry and form Franklin Co., VA.
Have found a great grandaughter still living in Palmetto who has lots of
family research done almost 100 years ago. Hope to post some of that in near
future.

The Wynn and Cockerham families moved from Surry County, Va., to
Lunenburg County prior to 1752. William W. (Winn) Cockerham married c1767
Edith Lavinia Stone, daughter of Richard (revolutionary soldier) and Mary
Stone. Edith died c1791 and William W. married June 20, 1794, Nancy,
daughter of Elisha Estes, and on Jan. 9, 1800, William W. and Nancy
Cockerham sold the farm his father Henry had bought in 1752. William W.
moved to Pendleton, perhaps stopping briefly in Greenville District, late in
1800. In 1810 he was enumerated (p.203) as William N. Cochran
11101-20010-14; also enumerated in 1810 were William Cockran 10100-10100-1,
John Cochran 33310-10010-4 and Michael Cochran 20010-10100-1. William W. is
said to have died in Pendleton 1818, his widow Nancy and the children then
moving to Alabama and later to Chocktaw County, Miss. However, a William
Cochran (also Cockerham, Cockrum), a Revolutionary soldier born 1748, served
from Henry County, Va., and died in Clarke County, Ala. in 1819. The
statements made in his application for a pension (S 38624) fit the know
facts of William Winn Cockerham's life. The latter had 14 children,
Littleberry, Letty, Henry, Peter, John, Richard, Drury, William, Anna, Jane,
Eliza, Mary, Kitty and Elisha. Peter, born c 1786, married Levicy Smith, and
was living in Franklin County, Ga., in 1830. By 1838, he had moved to Monroe
County, Miss., where the 1850 census showed he was born in Virginia and
Levicy in South Carolina. Among his legatees was his daughter Sarah, who
with her husband William Stewart (not closely related to the other Stewarts
who moved from Pendleton to Jackson County), signed a deed of March 23,
1857, conveying the late Peter's land to William Cockerham. Peter's daughter
Sarah was born in Franklin County, Ga., there married Ezekiel Thomas in 1828
and married (second) William Stewart Nov. 27, 1843 in Monroe County, Miss.
Stewart, born c 1766, moved there from Abbeville District, S.C. His first
wife was Nancy Birt or Burrett (see George Edson, Stewart Clan Magazine,
Sept. 1952). William Winn Cockerham's sons Drury and William moved from
Pendleton to Monroe County, Miss., between 1830 and 1832. Their brother John
was born c1770 and may have been the John in Pendleton in 1800 who was born
1756-1774. Their sister Mary married in Pendleton District May 3, 1817, the
Rev. Silas Dobbs, and her sister Kitty married Charles Dobbs, brother of
Silas. By 1820, members of the Dobbs family were living in Gwinnett County,
Ga., and St. Clair County, Ala. The youngest son of William Winn Cockerham,
Elisha, was born Jan. 12, 1796 and married Jan. 12, 1815, Polly Harrison;
their daughter Harriett married Lodowick Dobbs Feb. 3, 1839 and their son
Elisha Jr. married Mary E. Murdon. In 1820, Elisha Cockerham was living in
St. Clair County near Silas Dobbs and William Stewart, nephew of Absalom
Stewart, who was a neighbor of the Cockrum and Dobbs families in Gwinnett
County. A number of Cochrans, not necessarily of the same family were
enumerated in St. Clair County, Ala., in 1850, including John Sr., born
South Carolina 1774, with wife Sarah, born there 1789, several others of an
age to be sons of John, also Elijah Cochran, 54, born in Georgia (?smeared).

Also Cochrane, Cockran, Cockrum, Cockerun, Cockerham. Several
families seem to have been in the Jackson, Gwinnett, and Hall Counties area.
The name was originally Cochrane, in Scotland.
Capt. James Cochran was head of a militia district in Jackson County
in 1802. In 1803, he had land on Mulberry Fork in Capt. Alexander Reed's
district, where the name James was listed twice, and March 9, 1807 as James
Cockrum he bought some land from Drury Strickland. In the 1805 lottery, the
names of Andrew, James and Jonathan appear, and in the 1807 lottery, in
Cochran's district, were Major James and Thomas Cochran. A James Cockerham
was in the Wilkes County, Ga., 1785 tax list but is not found subsequently.
There was a James in Abbeville 1790, and another in Pendleton District, S.C.
James of Oglethorpe County, Ga., is said to have moved there from "Old 96",
which might have been either Pendleton or another of the South Carolina
Districts. James is not found in available Oglethrope records, athough a
Cochran family was there, Samuel marrying Rhoda Scorggin Oct. 2, 1797, and
William marrying Betsy Owen Dec. 22, 1798. They were perhaps were of the
family of Samuel (and Mary) Cochran, whose 1791 Wilkes County will (Book DD,
p. 262) mentioned his sons Samuel and William, also Micajah, Elizabeth,
Jennet, Thomas and John; Micajah being ledf Samuel's claim to 300 acres in
Campbell County, Va. On March 23, 1802 a Samuel Cochran married Sally
Furlow in Greene County, Ga. In 1820 only James was enumerated in Jackson
County; in Hall County were Archibald, Charles and Robert Cockram; in
Gwinnett County James Cockrum (no. 342) or Cockerun 100200-21000-0, and
Cheadle Cockrum (no. 413) 300010-10010-3; others of the family were

a Revolutionary Solider, in Jackson County drew Cherokee County land granted
Dec. 17, 1833. James left a will in Jackson County. Thomas Cochran, applying

but Cheadle's name is not found in the Virginia records after 1799. A
Cheadle Cockran purchased June 26,1812 in Jasper County, Ga., from Thomas

Kathy,
I can't help you directly with your family but thought I would tell you
about the work of S. C. Turnbo. I don't know the address for his works
but it can be found by using a search engine. I found it and put a
book mark on it. There are something like 24 small volumes of his
work in our local library. Turnbo started collecting stories which contain
genealogy tidbits before the Civil War. He continued his writing until
his death in about 1923. He has many stories of the Coker families in his
works.
The name Coker and Trimble are some of the oldest names in the Yellville
area, but are also on the Missouri side of the area. If memory serves me,
William Coker was the original white settler for the area and one of his
son-in-laws was a Trimble.
