Greetings Cochrans!
I am seeking information on my maternal GG-GF, GUS COCHRAN. He was
reportedly 6' 9" tall, and lived to be 99 years old, dating back to slavery
times. I don't know when he died. He could play most stringed instruments,
including the fiddle, mandolin and guitar. He subsequently taught several of
his G-sons to play as well. He was reportedly married to GEROGIA ANN CROOK.
They had at least one daughter, LILA COCHRAN, who married my G-father,
MARION MOSTELLA. The name "MOSTELLA" could have also been spelled
"MOSTILLER," "MOSTELLER," "MOSTILLO," or "MOSTILLA." That is about the
extent of my knowledge of him. If not obvious, he was African American and
a slave. I assume the name COCHRAN was handed down from his slave masters.
He lived in St. Clair County, Alabama. I would really appreciate hearing
from COCHRANS whose family may have owned slaves, specifically in Alabama.
Thanks in advance.
G. D. MOSTELLA

Coleen Fagan and Ardath Blue,
I still believe that the above message refers to one of the sons of SAMUEL
COCHRAN, b 1722. This family as previously posted by me on this list
includes:
SAMUEL COCHRAN - b c1722, d 1772-1776 in Rowan Co., NC (with will -
see below), m
SARAH WOOD(S) - b c1726, d c1776 in Rowan Co., NC (with will - see
below). Issue:
1. JOHN COCHRAN - b c1748 , m ELIZABETH PATTEN 2-7-1773 in Rowan
Co., NC; moved to Madison Co., KY by 1800; was listed in the 1810 Madison
Co., KY Census.
2. SARAH COCHRAN - b c1751, m ANDREW MC CLANAHAN 5-12-1772 in Rowan
Co., NC; moved to Madison Co., KY by 1796.
3. MARGARET COCHRAN - b c1753, m JOHN WILSON (There was a younger
JOHN WILSON listed in the 1810 Madison Co., KY Census and other JOHN WILSONS
in many other 1810 KY Co. Censuses).
4. WILLIAM COCHRAN - b c1755 (5-15-1753 from Coleen Fagan), m SARAH
MARGARET GAMBLE 3-3-1789 (from Coleen Fagan - probably in Madison Co., KY);
was listed in the 1810 Madison Co. Census.
5. JAMES COCHRAN - b c1757; paid taxes on land in Fayette Co., KY
(1789), Woodford Co,, KY (1790), and Madison Co., KY (1800) and possibly
more; was listed in the 1810 Bullitt Co., KY Census.
6. SAMUEL COCHRAN - b c1759; may have been killed in the
Revolutionary War (See below).
7. ANDREW COCHRAN - b c1760, m ANN WOOD(S) 9-17-1785 in Rowan Co.,
NC; was listed in the 1810 Barren Co., KY Census.
This was a wealthy family - perhaps descendants of a ship owner as suggested
by Jerry W. Murphy (5-4-1997 e-mail to COCHRAN(a)rmgate.pop.indiana.edu). The
SAMUEL COCHRAN family may have moved to Rowan Co., NC as early as 1760 or
1761 (dates of land purchase). They were not listed on 1759 Tax Lists but
1778 Tax Lists included ANDREW COCHRAN (117.1 acres), JAMES COCHRAN (518
acres), WILL COCHRAN (204 acres), SAMUEL COCHRAN (441 acres) and JOHN
COCHRAN (polls). All of the sons had probably moved to KY by 1790 as none
of them were listed in the 1790 Rowan Co. Census.
The following will abstracts are copied from "Abstracts of Wills & Estates
Records of Rowan County, North Carolina" by Jo White Linn:
A:226. SAMUEL (X) COCHRAN. 9 Oct 1772. prb. 1777. Wife SARAH. Son
WILLIAM to have land on Buffalo Creek adj. ROBERT BARCLAY & ALEXANDER PENNY.
Sons JOHN and ANDREW. Sons JAMES and SAMUEL each to have 1/2 of home
plantation. Daus. SARAH and MARGARET, MARGARET to have £50. Exrs: wife
SARAH, sons JOHN & JAMES. Wit: ROBERT LINN, JAMES ROSS, THOMAS GALBREATH.
A:227 SARAH (X) COCHRAN. 20 Aug. 1776. prb. 1777. Sons: JOHN,
ANDREW, WILLIAM, JAMES, and SAMUEL. Daus. SARAH and MARGARET. Exrs: sons
JOHN & JAMES. Wit: ROBERT LINN, SAMUEL COCHRAN. Her husband was deceased
when she wrote the will.
Daughter SARAH was not given anything specifically in SAMUEL's will. The
reason for that may be explained with the following entry from "Rowan
County, North Carolina Vacant Land Entries 1778-1789" by Richard A. Enochs:
ANDREW MC CLANAHEN 300A on E side of Buffelow Crk adj WILLIAM GIBSON
& ALEXANDER PENNEY including improvement formerly made by SAMUEL COUGHERN.
5 Feb 1778.
In Jerry W. Murphy's previously mentioned message the migration of the
WOODS, COCHRAN, LITTLE (or LYTLE) and PATTON familes from the Cecil Co., MD
and Chester Co., PA area (adjacent counties) to Carolina [from "Carolina
Cradle" by Robert W. Ramsey] is covered. SAMUEL COCHRAN may have stopped
briefly in Augusta Co., VA. The following 3 entries from "Chronicles of the
Scotch-Irish Settlement in Virginia" by Lyman Chalkley (three volumes)
support this:
Vol I - pg 140 November 17,1767 (341) SAML. COCKRANE exempted from
levy - age and infirmity. [He (?) makes out a will 5 years later.]
Vol I - pg 197 April 20, 1778 (286) ELENOR COCHRAN and ELIZABETH
WILSON, soldiers wives and having young children, allowed £15 each.
[Perhaps WILSON should be added to the names of migrating families above.]
Vol I - pg 206 May 19, 1779 (464) ELENORE COCKRAIN, widow of
SAMUEL COCKRAIN, who died in Continental Service, allowed £40.
I could find no evidence of SAMUEL COCHRAN (JR.), b c1759 in KY (There was a
younger SAMUEL COCHRAN listed in the 1810 Madison Co., KY Census who could
have been the son of either SAMUEL, b c1759, or JOHN, b c1748).

William Crittenden Cochran, m Mary McMahan in Alton IL on 3-25-1839.
Searching for parents of William or any records of him in KY in 1830's or
before. Family stories say his father was Glass Cochran (doesn't appear to be
the Glass Cochran from NH who married Sara Hamilton). Conflicting family
stories say William was born in Somerset, KY or Dublin Ireland. I have much
info on his decendants for anyone researching this line. Other related
surnames: McMahan/McMahon, Conway, Hoots, Jackson, Wishon. Any info
appreciated.
William Patrick Cochran, born June, 1820 in Handcock County, WV.
Two daughters:
Sarah Isabelle, born September, 1849 in Handcock County, WV
Eliza Jane, born 1852 in Handcock County, WV
Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated.
This is for Ronald G. Patterson:
"History of Antrim, NH, From Its Earliest Settlement, to June 27, 1877,
with a Brief Genealogical Record of all the Antrim Families" by Rev. W.
R. Cochrane, published by the town of Antrim, 1880.
Under DINSMORE, page 453-457:
"John Dinsmore of Acheumead, Scotland, emigrated to Bellywattick, County
Antrim, Ireland, where he died. All the Dinsmores in Ireland and
America sprung from this man. His oldest son, John, came to this
country about the same time with the first company of settlers at
Londonderry. For some reason he was landed at a place called Georges,
in what was known as the "District of Maine". In this place was an
English fort. Here he built a house; and the Indians (Penobscots) soon
became very familiar with him, calling him and themselves, "all one
brother". But soon the French stirred up the Indians to hositility, and
one day when Mr. Dinsmore was shingling his house, suddenly the
war-whoop was sounded; he was ordered to come down and the Indians told
him he must go to Canada. He was a captive three months, and gained
great favor with the chief."
There is more to this interesting story if anyone wants me to type it
in, I will certainly do so. "Gib", you can send me your snailmail, and
I'll copy all of this and send it to you.
On page 454, the story continued, after Mr. Dinsmore's escape from the
Indians. He returned to Londonderry, NH where his sons had married.
Robert Dinsmore had married in Ireland to Margaret Orr, and brought over
with him four children. The daughter married John Hopkins, and they
brought over two children with them. She afterwards had children: John,
Robert, Nancy and Ruth, the last, born in 1743, and becoming the wife of
Dea. Isaac COCHRAN. Robert's children were John, Mary, Elisabeth,
Robert, and William. The last was born this side of the water in 1731;
married Elisabeth COCHRAN in 1755 (sister of Dea. Isaac COCHRAN); was a
leading man in the town of Windham; a military officer, and father of
Gov. Samuel Dinsmore, and of Dea. Robert Dinsmore, the "Rustic Bard",
and died in 1801. Robert's oldest child, John, was born in Ireland,
married Martha McKeen. (This Martha was dau. of Justice McKeen by his
second wife, Annis Cargil; was sister of John McKeen, the father of
Robert McKeen of Antrim; and was half-sister of Jenny McKeen, Dea. Isaac
COCHRAN's mother).
I'm sorry to say, but I do not have your COCHRAN line in my genealogy
report, but I know your line is closely connected with mine as the below
information shows. My own COCHRAN ancestor, James Cochran b. c1674
Londonderry, Ireland who married Letitia Moor PATTEN, came to America
1717, landing in Halifax, Nova Scotia. They made their way to Topsham,
ME, where James died 1720. His widow and children moved on to
Londonderry, NH.
From Rev. W. R. COCHRANE's above mentioned book, page 421: John COCHRAN,
a Scotch patriot and sturdy Protestant, son of John and Elizabeth Arwin
Cochran of Londonderry, Ireland, was born in that city in 1704. It is
supposed that this John and his son, only 15 years old, were the two
John Cochrans that signed in 1718 the memorial to Gov. Shute for land in
"New England that excellent and renowned plantation". But this is by no
means certain, because there was another John Cochran, probably cousin
of the son above, and somewhat older, who was one of the elders at the
formation of the original church in Londonderry, NH. This one, known as
Deacon John may have been one of those that signed the memorial. For
some reason the father did not come over; but the son came over,
arriving here in the autumn of 1720, and settled in Londonderry (part
that is now Windham). His uncle, James McKeen (who married Janet
Cochran, sister of his father), had previously settled a few miles to
the north; and Peter Cochran, John Cochran, William Cochran, and Andrew
Cochran, all near of kin, had made their clearings, though remote from
the young settler of whom we speak. Neighbors were far and few. His
life must have been hard an lonely. In couse he married his cousin
Jenny McKeen. Mr. John Cochran, known as "Capt. John" was captain of
the military company of Windham. He died at the age of 84 and he left
children: John, Isaac, James, Elizabeth and Mary. John, the oldes,
married Annis Dinsmore and went to Belfast, ME. Isaac, the second son,
will be noted below, James the third son, was born in 1748, married
Elizabeth Nesmith. Elizabeth, the fourth child, married William
Dinsmore, and was the mother of Samuel Dinsmore, gov. of New Hampshire
in 1831, 1832, and 1833. The fifth child, Mary married Andrew Park in
1774 and lived and died in Windham.
Dea. Isaac Cochran, (page 423), was called "Constable" at the early age
of 18. He married Ruth Hopkins 28 Oct 1765; mvoed into Antrim March 10,
1784 and was moderator of a town meeting Aug. 29 of that year. He had
been an officer in the Revolutionary army.
I'm happy to share this with you all,
Janice Mauldin Castleman

I am researching the Cochran family line and I am searching the parents

Married Sarah Margaret Gamble Mar 3 1789.

The above information comes from family records and I am not sure how
accurate they are as they have both William and Sarah born in Madison

I have found information regarding the COCHRANS and the CREWS and WOODS
in
book titled "Carolina Cradle" by Robert W. Ramsey but I can't put a
direct connection with the line I am searching. If anyone can help me
with any connection to the above family I will very much appreciate it.
Am working on my COCHRAN line. I know the details of my g-grandfather,
Charles Austin COCHRAN, but his ancestors are difficult to pinpoint My
known (and family anecdotal evidence) COCRAN details follows. My only clues
come from family letters: they state that my COCHRANS came to America
with a family named DINSMORE, to which they were related, and settled in
Maine. I think they actually settled (perhaps later) in New Hampshire,
because names and dates discovered in the PAF file at the FHC seems to
fit. However, John COCHRAN (generation #3 below) is listed in the 1850
census as being born in Maine, and his children born in Illinois. Anyway,
here is my line with the annotation (?) after the generation numbers being
educated guesses.
1.(?)John COCHRAN, b. abt 1760 Maine or New Hampshire, had brother named
