To Whom It May Concern :
This may become a long narrative .
I'm an amateur genealogy researcher and I have a brickwall that
is insurmountable. Because of some handicaps that have become
my burden, I am unable to make trips to sites where the information
may be recorded. On several occasions, I have had some generous
offers to help me and even though especially pleased to accept those
offers, I understand when the volunteers run into the same problems
that I have had since I began in 1984 So, let me establish my sites
that I need to pursue. The next person to read this may be able to
establish a credible link to solve my quest.
In my search for :
- my great grandmother Jennie HAND, nee COBURN, was born
around 1846. I am unable to locate a birth certificate in the
state of Massachusetts where some records show that she
may have been born. The 1880 US Federal Census for the
city of Lowell, in Middlesex county, in Massachusett has an
error listed (by the enumerator?). The record is in The Family
History Library Film # 1254545 and N/A film # T9-0545 on
page # 516C. In this record, She is shown to be a thirty-four
year old woman born in Massachusetts.
- Jennie was married to my great grandfather named Henry HAND
They became the parents of my grandfather Edward E. HAND in
the year 1871 . Henry was a steam locomotive engineer working
for the railroad, I assume, in the Lowell,MA area. He (Henry) was
five years older than Jennie when they married circa 1870 .
- Edward E. HAND was born in the last half of his birth year of 1871.
- My paternal grandmother Iva E. REED married Edward in Lowell,
MA in 1895 and two years plus some months later, she (Grammy)
went to be with her mother before the birth of her son (my Dad) in
October the fifth in the year of 1897 in her VT state hometown of
Kirby, Caledonia County, Vermont. Pre-Natal care was often dealt
with in this way. Edward ultimately chose to not continue being
married shortly after and Iva (Grammy) sued for divorce
'by abandonement' and it was finalized on December 30th 1899.
- My father Kenneth Cecil HAND was raised by a step-father Fred
Pierce and without the formal name change to PIERCE assumed the
surname and did not effectively accomplish the intention of the
process of that applied for name-change - . . .in the late 1950s.
The sites that I would go to if I could would be to locate the vital
statistics for the birth of Jennie HAND nee COBURN in Massachusetts
in her supposed birth year of 1846. I should explain that I have assumed
that the surname COBURN was in fact her maiden name. However, It is
a possibility that the surname could very well be that of an unknown 'late'
husband . There is conflicting evidence by way of the census enumerators`
showing that Jennie as Coburn and Jennie as mother of Edward E. HAND
was born in either Massachusetts or in Vermont.
