Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
To All Subscribers,
DO NOT DELETE the file SULFNBK.EXE. The mail being sent out claiming it is a
virus is a hoax.
You can read about it here.
http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/sulfnbk.exe.warning.html
The person that sent the email, I'm sure didn't know it was a hoax. This is
the reason why people shouldn't send virus warnings to a mailing list.

A VIRUS could be in your computer files now, dormant but will become
active on June 1. FOLLOW DIRECTIONS BELOW TO CHECK IF YOU HAVE IT AND TO
REMOVE IT NOW.
It was brought to my attention yesterday that a virus is in
circulation via email. I looked for it and to my surprise I
found it on mine.
Please follow the directions and remove it from yours
TODAY!!!!!!!
No Virus software can detect it. It will become active on
June 1, 2001. It might be too late by then. It wipes out all
files
and folders on the hard drive. This virus travels thru E-mail and migrates
to the 'C:\windows\command' folder. To find it and get rid of it off of
your computer, do the following:
Go to the "START" button.
Go to "FIND" or "SEARCH"
Go to "FILES & FOLDERS"
Make sure the find box is searching the "C:" drive.
Type in; SULFNBK.EXE
Begin search.
If it finds it, highlight it.
Go to 'File' and delete it.
Close the find Dialog box
Open the Recycle Bin
Find the file and delete it from the Recycle bin
You should be safe.
The bad part is: You need to contact everyone you have
sent ANY E-mail to in the past few months. Many major companies
have found
this virus on their computers. Please help your friends !!!!!!!!
DO NOT RELY ON YOUR ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWARE.
McAFEE and NORTON CANNOT DETECT IT BECAUSE IT DOES NOT BECOME A
VIRUS UNTIL JUNE 1ST.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DO NOT OPEN THE FILE!!!

I keep watching to see if any of you come up with my Coburn. Mine is Joseph
Coburn, 1827, Pa. Had a brother Hirum, 1818, Pa. I have them in Halls &s
Rds., Harord, Md. in the 1860 cencus. Joseph married Janeannie Miller, 1830,
Pa. and Hirum married Mary 1815, Pa. Never found them in Pa on any cencus.
Joseph had a daughter Fannie, 1855, Md. who married Job McCray, my
grandfather. Civil War Pension Recd's show Janeannie married to Geroge Reed,
formerly widow of Pvt. Joseph Coburn, Md. I have never been able to find
records of Joseph in the Civil War. Does anyone have suggestions on this and
do I have any kin out there? Janeannie and her children moved from Md. to
Warren, Oh., where she met and married Geroge Reed. I have never been able
to find the Miller that was the parents of Janeannie. Thanks so much for all
the info that comes thru. Hazel

I have the same book which is still in print. My father is listed (Henry
Barclay Coburn 1900-1952) and I was born some 24 years after the book was
published. Are you volunteering to do volume 2? (Joke). My cousin's
husband the family genealogist with the aid of his wife has entered about 4
generations from Edward onward! I am intrigued however to know whether
anyone else has gone further than this as it would be nice to have the whole
thing on disc that could be used/referred to at will.
Locally we have done very little and not in any way matched the fecundity of
our American forebears. We seem to have completely lost one line after my
Great Grandmother but will keep hunting.
Cheers
Bill

Hello Bill !
We definately are on the same track--same family--mine starting with Edward
Colborne - b.1618 d. 1712 m. Hannah______ !
Thanks for the come-back! The book I have is one passed down through the
family, and was compiled by George A. Gordon and Silas R. Coburn,
Genealogists. Silas R. Coburn - Editor and published by Walter Coburn of
Lowell, Mass. in 1913. (Courier-Citizen Company Press)
The title page says ".......came from England in 1635. Purchased land in
'Dracutt on Merrimack' 1668. Occupied his purchase, 1669"
"He was the first settler north of the Merrimac River, except on the sea
coast; at that time bringing his family, consisting of himself and his wife,
eight sons and two daughters" .
Also mentioned is an Admiral Sir George Cockburn (pronounced Coburn) . I
thought this was interesting.
My goal is to reach the present day, finding all the leaves on the tree!
Any further information will be greatly appreciated.

Hello Max - what a small world. I too am in Canberra and my family did come
from Dracut. I would be interested to know the the line you are following
out of curiosity. It appears I have no connections with the Coburns in the
phone book.
Cheers

This is the family I have been researching !
This is the information I have from a family tree book originally belonging
to my great-grandfather (put into print in 1913)
FIRST GENERATION
Edward Colborne, born 1618 married Hannah________
Died 1712
Children:
Edward, b. 1642 d. 1675
In the absence of records, we are led to conclude that Edward, Jr. was one
of the older sons. He was born at Ipswich, and came to Dracut with his
father. He received, with his brothers, a share of the Webb farm, which,
after his death, was deeded to his brother, Daniel. He was one of the
company who served in King Philip's War, and from the history of Ipswich, we
learn that he was killed at Awuakheage, Aug. 2, 1675. The account of the
affray is found in the History of Worcester County, in that portion relating
to the Town of Brookfield, called by the Indians, Squakheage. About the
middle of July, 1675, a band of Nipmucs from King Philip's neighborhood
murdered four or five people in the Town of Mendon. The people in the
neighboring towns were alarmed, fearing a general uprising, but the Indians
expressed a desire for peace, and appointed a time and place for a treaty.
The whites were in charge of Captains Wheeler and Hutchinson, who had with
them, twenty men. They were treacherously ambushed by a band of 200
Indians, and eight were killed and wounded; among them was Edward Coburn,
Jr.
The survivors retreated to the shelter of a fort or garrison house where

"...In 1815 Admiral Sir George Cockburn (pronounced Coburn) had command of
the vessel which conveyed the Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte to St. Helena after
his defeat at Waterloo. A letter to the writer from Mr. William R. Nesbitt
of Sutton in Ashfield, Notts, England, conveys the following information:
"The irish Coburns came from Scotland where the name is spelt Cockburn. The
name is said by antiquarians to be a corruption of Colbrand"
Edward Colburn was probably the first settler in Dracut, (Mass) who owned
land with the intention of making a permanent settlement. The names Tyng,
Hinchman and Webb appear as owners, but they held their land only for sale
and were not settlers, but speculators.

My connection to COBURN is thru Isabelle/Isabel who marries Dr. James
Francis SPELMAN in Nov. of 1895 in Anaconda, Deer Lodge cty, MT.
I believe Isabel is in Anaconda because sister Kittie (Kitten, Catherine)
went there in early 1890's to teach. Kittie marries Edward S. MAXWELL-
proprietor of a local general/dry goods store. The Maxwells move to
Seattle, have 3 children, seperate, die and are buried there.
Dr. SPELMAMN dies July 1, 1917 and in the 1920 Federal census Isabel
shares her home in Anaconda with Mattie E. MILES, shown as a sister to
Isabel.
Frank and Mary COBURN are dead before 1913. No sign of them in the 1900
census in Dunkirk, NY.
Any connections to this family are treasure. Please contact me at:
