Hello Polly,
In response to your posting.
Certainly of interest is his age and the references to his deceased uncle, his
mother and no mention of the uncles last name; these open many questions.
AGE - This document tells us that on Aug 8, 1853 this Michael was at least 21
years of age; places him born prior to 1831, possibly 2nd born male to Michael
and Ann (McLaughlin) Coburn, and your line of Wm 3rd. This would make a more
interesting naming pattern of Francis, Michael and William.
Mother - We know that by 1853 the mother Ann McLaughlin was dead and the
father Michael b1797 had remarried in 1849 and had several children already by
this 2nd wife. It was also the case that according to my letters that the
older children did not like this as the 2nd wife was their age. In 1853 would
he have said mother or step-mother in a court document? Did he even know his
step-mother? At that time he was living in Boston and had been learning the
Blacksmith trade. One would think that the some such wording 'as my late
mother' or 'step-mother' would have been used.
Uncle/McLaughlin - We know that a A.W. Coburn and G.D. Coburn went to
California as Miners. We also know that from my letters about the return of
George D. Coburn but there is no mention of anyone else. This George was on
his way up to see his father in Windsor, NS.
The granddaughter of Michael b1797, father Francis b 1829, lists both Alonzo
and Michael as 'single', versus the rest of the children of Michael and Ann,
she seemed not to know anything about them. Now knowing the date of '1853',
it is possible that the A.W. that went to CA with G.D. is actually Michael
with his name change since it was 1855 reference. OR, would the 'Uncle' be a
brother of his mother Ann McLaughlin Coburn, thus Alonzo Walter McLaughlin.
The only thing that bothers me about this is that Michael b1797 and his 2nd
wife Mary named there first boy Charles D., b1850. Charles married and had
only one child in 1877, Alonzo Walter Coburn; the name appears to come from
the Coburn side and not her side. Otherwise, I am only aware of the
families/generations of Michael and Ann to repeat this name. I might add that
no early letters survive that tell us about deaths which occur within the
family ... they had to exist at one time otherwise some statements within the
saved letters would not make sense to the recipent.
In the year '1853' another uncle, William Little widower of Michael's (b1797)
sister Mary Ann, appears to have died on board ship on his way to CA. Do not
know the cause of death.
Other Alonzo Coburns -
Alonzo Coburn in Milford, MA. - The NEGHS Descendents of Thomas Bancroft
lists a Alonzo Coburn and Eliza Curtis (Jones) Coburn having a daughter Lelia
b1846 in Hopedale. Lelia married Eben Draper Bancroft.
Alonzo Coburn in - NEGHS Descendents of Danford Needham b1786 in Wales, MA
lists daughter Lucy D. born 1818 in New Brimfield, and died in Atlantic, Iowa
in 1887, married a Alonzo Coburn in 1837. Danford Needham died 1855 in
Racine WI. He had married Alice Thompson b1789 Wales, MA, d/o William
Thompson, and died in Wales,MA in 1854. (Interesting.)
Hope this is of some help.
Regards,
Jan

<< Sandie,
Do you know who Shelby's father and mother was and what county he was born

Hello Charlene, I think we have corresponded before, and I believe I may
have more info since the last time we corresponded., i hope so.
In other correspondances with other Coburn researchers (mostly in TX) we
"believe" Shelby Coburn was born in Lauderdale Co. Ala. but we have not
proven it yet. Also, a fellow researcher tells me that she believes the
father of Shelby Coburn is Francis Coburn b. 1797 Anson Co. NC., but I have
not been able to prove this information. She had gotten this info from
another researcher online who she did not know and so it goes. But, it
looks like a good lead.
I do have the Civil War papers on Shelby P. Coburn b. 1818 Ala.
His description is 5' 6", bue eyes light hair, fair complextion.
(which is also a good description of my GreatGranddaddy Moman Talmage Coburn,
my grandmothers father)
Shelby was enlisted in the Mississippi Calvry July 31 1863 , he enlisted at
Browns Mill, Itwamba Co. MS. I also found where Shelby owned at least one
slave in 1850 as well as a Leroy Coburn whom I suspect is a brother or
relative. (their names were spelled Cobern)
Shelby Coburn is buried in the Oak Grove Cem in Itwamba Co. MS. This
tombstone proves the date of his birth and death. ( i have found some info
online that gives the wrong birthdates)
His birthdate is 03-17-1818 and his death date is 06-30-1900 as per his
tombstone in the Oak Grove Cem, in Itwamba Co. MS.
Shelby is last found living in with Edd Barber
on a 1900 Itawamba Co. census index card. Must have been taken just before
he died. I have not yet gotten a copy of the actual 1900 Itwamba Co. MS
census records to show more info. on the family he is living with. Believe
it to be his son in law or grandson.
To get back to the father of Shelby Coburn. I was "told" his father was
Francis Coburn b. 1797 and that his father was Headley Coburn b. 1771 Martin
Co. NC d. 1824 Lauderdale Co. Ala and his father was Francis Coburn b. 1740
Martin Co. NC. Please note: I have not proven lineage after Shelby
Coburn. These "Fathers" are just notes to be researched and proven.
Please let me know if I can help further
Sincerely. Sandie
