Beginning March 2nd, 2020 the Mailing Lists functionality on RootsWeb will be discontinued. Users will no longer be able to send outgoing emails or accept incoming emails. Additionally, administration tools will no longer be available to list administrators and mailing lists will be put into an archival state.
Administrators may save the emails in their list prior to March 2nd. After that, mailing list archives will remain available and searchable on RootsWeb
I also just stumbled across this list. On my Grandmother's side of the
family her father was named Frank Coburn Millard. His father was John
Patton Millard and his mother being Mary Jean/Gean Coburn.
We have little knowledge of Mary Jean's family other than it was said that
she was a very stern Scotch lady. She may have been born in Canada cir
1830 and her parents are suspected to have been Scotch.
She met and married a widowed John Patton Millard of New York somewhere
around the mid 1850's in Iowa probably at or near Council Bluffs, Iowa
which was one of the jumping off points for wagon trains of the era. One
of their sons, Hiram DuMonte Millard was born there in 1856. The Millard
family researchers were apparently convinced that John had gone to
California and died. Well, he went to California all right but lived many
years in good health and had another son and many grandchildren etc. The
pair also appear to have had three daughters born prior to 1856 which leads
me to believe they may have met and married in either New York or
Massachusetts.
I know a good deal about John Millard although I do not know what happened
to his first wife who apparently died in some sort of epidemic in New York
about 1849 and I have no clue as to whether he had any children by this
first marriage. He may have met Mary Jean Coburn in New York or
Massachusetts as we have a photograph taken in a studio in Fall River,
Massachusetts (before Lizzie Bordon's time) but we do not know the exact
time frame.
If anyone recognizes anything here I would be interested in discussing this
family.

> Nora, I think I may be able to help you a little later today or tomorrow. I am a Coburn and received a note months ago from someone researching Coburn and I think she was from New Zealand. I don't have time right now, but will check later in the next day or two. If I forget, please remind me at jcoburn(a)worldpath.net.

As European settlement did not commence in New Zealand until much later I am wondering how her name came to be Coburn. I know there were sealers and whalers in the region around 1822 and so I am writing to this list. Can anyone help me?
