I have a John Cobley b. abt. 1846 in Wales in my line. I am going to send you
a website that is about the Cobley line that this John Cobley comes from.
They were all coal miners and lived in the area of Caerphilly, Wales which is
close to Cardiff on a map.
My g. grandfather Thomas Cobley came over from there abt. 1876 and settled in
Fremont Co. CO. He had an uncle named John that I've been looking for because
it was thought that he might have emigrated to the U.S. The John you have in
that IA 1880 census could be him. The birth year is abt. right and there
wern't to many Cobley's from Wales in the US at that time.
We have a Cobley research group with Yahoo groups that you might want to
join. It is a lot more active than this list has ever been.
Welcome to the family!
Take care, Joyce
Hello
Recently I have discovered that Ellen COBLEY
(Mrs. James COBLEY - nee Unknown) may be related
to my relative, Alvina (PETERSON) JEFFERS. She
was the orphaned granddaughter of Henry and Dorothea
SCHWIESOW, immigrants to Pennsylvania, from Holstein
1872, natives of Mecklenburg. Have never found a
PETERSON connection. Alvina b. 1872 Holstein? married
William I. JEFFERS in LeMars, Plymouth Co., IA about 1890.
Was just transcribing old newspapers of LeMars as I do often for
newspaperabstracts.com and ran across this one I had never
noticed before.
Here is what I have so far on COBLEY:
LeMars Sentinel
LeMars, Plymouth County,
Iowa
17 Aug 1909
abstract from
SENEY
Special Correspondence
Mr. and Mrs. James COBLY, of Hocking, Iowa, in company with
Mr. and Mrs. H. SCHWIESOW, of Preston township, relatives of
Mrs. Alvina JEFFERS, spent Sunday at her home.
Anyone have a clue?
We (a fellow COBLEY - PETERSON -SCHWIESOW researcher) have also found
this...
The article says she is Mrs. James COBLY of Hocking, which is located
in Monroe Co., IA and here is what I found....

The common thread between the Cobley's and Schwiesow's so far is PA,
and coal
mining. Finding Ellen's parents will possibly provide the link to a
relationship.
(she) Found 2 newspaper articles in Monroe County............
one was a ''50 years ago today'' article in 1952.........a John
Cobley
was indicted for a murder in a ''booze joint'', but had not been
located yet.
Second one, also a ''50 years ago''.........they captured John, who
was indicted for murder over a bucket of beer.
James & Ellen Cobley are living in Des Moines on 1920 and 1930 census'.
in the Glendale Cemetery, Des Moines Township, POLK CO., IOWA
from Charter Pierce website, Iowa
COBLEY, Ellen Date of death August 12,1969
COBLEY, James F. " " February 21, 1958
I am new to this list and COBLEY research as well, any light anyone
can shed will be wonderful.
Thanks,
Sandy
