Hi,
I notice that this list is as quiet as some of the surname lists I admin !
Hopefully someone is still out there. I have a will for one John HILLS
and he is by great big brick wall.
I was about to engage a researcher, and was going to quote the will, when I
noticed that there was a declaration
In the Goods of John Hills deceased 16th April 1831 APPEARED
PERSONALLY Samuel COBLEY of No. 13 Prospect place Westminster Road in the
Country of Surry Schoolmaster and made oath that he knew and was
well acquainted with the said John Hills late of the London Road in
this Parish of Saint George Southwark in the same county Pianoforte
maker for many years before and down to the time of his death and was
also well acquainted with his manner and character of handwriting and
subscription by reason of his having seen him write and subscribe his
name and having now with care and attention viewed perused and
inspected the
On checking the IGI I find that there is a marriage on 8 Mar 1813 of one
Samuel COBLEY
to Mary Elizabeth UNDERSHELL HILLS. Obviously, this could be one huge
co-incidence - if it isn't I might just have found ONE relative for gg
grandfather John. Yes there really is a name UNDERSHELL - there is one
family in Bermondsey (not all that far from John Hills or Samuel Cobley)
amongst others. There is a DAY=UNDERSHELL marriage and also a firm of
Tanners listed in the 1811 directory UNDERSHELL & DAY.
If this means anything to anyone now, or at some future reading please
contact me.
Best regards........ Erica Hills, Perth, Western Australia.
